HOMESTEAD TO IMPLEMENT ‘SMART’ PAID PARKING SYSTEM
Local tech firm’s mobile pay-for-parking app to make its debut in the borough this month
HOMESTEAD, PA – A new smartphone app will be coming to Homestead residents and business patrons to allow them to pay for parking with their mobile device, making it easier to add time to an expiring meter while shopping or dining in the borough.
Thursday, Homestead Council unanimously approved a partnership with MeterFeeder, Inc., whose application of the same name is available for download at Google Play or the iTunes store, using any Android or Apple device. The app allows users to upload and store their license plate and payment information the first time they pay for parking and store it on their device forever; then, when a user’s time is about to expire, the app sends a notification to their phone, alerting them and allowing them to add more time remotely.
“This platform will help us bring Homestead to the cutting edge of parking and mobile technology,” said Homestead Borough Council President Lloyd Cunningham, “while the coin-operated meters will remain available for users who prefer them. We will not only have a simpler parking system, but we’ll have an expanded way to guide residents and visitors to available parking spots, and solve traffic issues in the borough, and bring in extra revenue.”
The Pittsburgh-based tech firm’s application is currently being used in Dormont, and is making its debut in Bellevue this month; the company has plans to expand into more municipalities around Allegheny County and throughout the rest of the United States, in the very near future. Over the next few weeks, they will be training Homestead and Bellevue administration on how to use MeterFeeder and its administrative companion app, MeterReader. Recently, MeterFeeder entered a partnership with CMU’s Traffic21 program, with the intention of teaming up to unleash revolutionary traffic and parking solutions throughout Allegheny County.
MeterFeeder COO, Jeremy Moore stated, “We’re very excited to work with Homestead’s citizens and businesses on ways we can leverage MeterFeeder to improve their parking situation. Homestead is a fantastic community and anyway we can help them drive more revenue and provide unique parking solutions is an honor for us. One of our main goals is to help municipalities easily and affordably upgrade their parking technology and we understand many of the challenges boroughs have when adopting new programs and initiatives. We will be working closely with Mayor Esper, Borough Council, and administration on rolling out our program over the next few months to provide the best possible offering for the borough.”
