Mr. Novick was heavily involved in the program development process, and as an elected official, will be able to provide valuable insight into how to tackle this extremely sensitive parking issue from an entirely different viewpoint.

Smart Cities and Innovation in Las Vegas

Hear from Michael Sherwood, IT Director for the City of Las Vegas, about the Innovation District where Smart Cities technology companies are given the opportunity to test and showcase their hardware and software. Smart Cities goes beyond parking to include connected traffic signals, trash pickup, traffic regulation, pollution detection, pedestrian activity and much more. Mr. Sherwood will help demystify the term “SmartCities” and will give us actionable items on how to get a seat at the Smart Cities table.

Introducing Tactical Parking: Tactical Urbanism

This presentation starts off by setting the stage for tactical parking by explaining the more common concepts of tactical urbanism and tactical transit, complete with current, real-world examples and videos. We then explain how the concept can be applied to parking, as it relates to five key challenges.

1. Availability: is there parking when and where people need?

2. Abandonment: are people choosing not to go somewhere for lack of parking options?

3. Congestion: how do we handle traffic volume, pollution, road rage and accidents?

4. Pricing: how do you find the perfect rate for each time and location?

5. Craters: how much parking is needed, and what should be done with the excess?

We then briefly suggest tactical parking solutions to each issue above before splitting the audience into smaller groups. Participants are encouraged to discuss their own tactical parking solutions to one of the above concerns, or come up with other parking issues being faced in their communities and a tactical parking idea to try when they return. The room is then brought back together and time allocated for groups to share their best ideas.
