UCLA Deploys VIMOC Technologies’ AI-Driven Multi-Modal Transportation Solution

Intelligence at the edge will optimize ride-hailing efficiency, infrastructure utilization

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (November 15, 2017) – VIMOC Technologies, a leader in delivering Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions at the edge of the network, has deployed their Smart Multi-modal transportation solution at UCLA to allow for the effortless fusion of public, private and ride-sharing transportation. With its flexible embedded applications, VIMOC’s deep learning Rosella™ Platform has helped Multi-modal transportation at UCLA’s Gateway Plaza loop coexist safely and efficiently.

The advent of ride-sharing companies has narrowed the gap between yesterday’s world of Automobility and tomorrow’s world of Multi-mobility. We no longer live in a world that is cleanly divided between public and private transportation; while ride-hailing vehicles are owned by private individuals, they offer a public service. People often use ride-sharing services where public transportation and public parking spaces are scarce or inconvenient. This changes how traffic environments must be constructed and monitored, since ride-sharing vehicles need curb space for the safe embarking and disembarking of passengers.

UCLA has been at the forefront of this transition for addressing ride-hailing transportation needs. As a metropolitan campus with a daily population of 76,000 people, UCLA prioritizes transportation safety and efficiency, and has embraced the reality of 68,000 ride-hailing stops per week. UCLA has opted for a coexistence approach in dealing with the usage of their limited curb spaces, which accommodates all forms of transportation while maintaining an orderly traffic flow.

“Gateway Plaza is a vital hub for the university’s functional transfer of our students, employees and visitors,” said David Karwaski, Senior Associate Director of UCLA Transportation. “With the addition of over 60,000 weekly ride-hailing drop-offs and pick-ups, ensuring safe and efficient traffic flow has given us the opportunity to pursue traffic and curb space management with an entirely new perspective.”

In partnership with VIMOC Technologies, UCLA has implemented a real-time and highly accurate AI-enabled system that visually detects and classifies various forms of transportation such as buses, cars, bicycles, and pedestrians with a view for soft enforcement. Soft enforcement is UCLA’s innovative approach to ensuring that ride-hailing vehicles understand and respect the curb space being made available for their safe operation. “VIMOC’s Artificial Intelligence enabled Multi-modal solution has ensured our scarce curb space is managed and enforced most effectively,” said Karwaski.

“Working with UCLA has given us the opportunity to demonstrate and validate a new and effective approach for Multi-modal traffic management,” said Tarik Hammadou, CEO of VIMOC.

VIMOC’s technology addresses the coexistence of public, private and ride-sharing services with unprecedented real-time and reliable data.

“Intelligent Transportation System solutions can be effective when the gathered intelligence is highly accurate and can be presented in real-time,” said Hammadou. “Operators can then act upon this data to make significant improvements to existing structures and guide transportation behavior.”

VIMOC will continue to work with UCLA by providing AI-based solutions in pursuit of a Smart Campus environment.
