Wilmington, NC (March 6, 2018)—New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) has become the first hospital in the United States to install a complete parking guidance system.
NHRMC is the largest provider of health care services in southeastern North Carolina, and with nearly 7,000 staff it is also the largest employer in the region.
“Hospitals need to be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Dale Fowler, President of INDECT USA. “Staff come and go at irregular hours, which impacts the daily flow of traffic within the garage. NHRMC wanted to make the parking experience as easy and stress-free as possible.”
The employee parking garage was recently completed as part of NHRMC’s initiative to create more space for visitors and patients. The new garage houses 580 undercover spaces and an additional 145 open air spaces on the rooftop.
“Many NHRMC health professionals travel long distances and work long hours to provide care for those in need,” said Fowler. “The INDECT parking guidance system allows staff to quickly and easily find a spot by guiding drivers to vacant spaces using highly-visible signs and sensors.”
Sensors are placed above each parking space, giving drivers a clear view of available spaces. Different colors indicate each space’s status: green for available, red for occupied and blue for disabled/handicapped parking. The lights are clearly visible from several hundred yards away and LED signs at the end of each driving aisle help direct staff to the nearest available space.
All internal signs have been specially designed for NHRMC with custom boxes housing back-lit panels and the hospital’s unique logo. The flexibility of INDECT’s matrix signs allows the hospital to display a wide range of information including welcome messages, daily information, parking counts and specific guidance for employees with disabilities.
Searching for parking at a hospital can be a stressful experience. Unwell patients, worried visitors and rushed staff all wanting to park as close as possible in the shortest possible time.
