ROUSH CleanTech – Propane Autogas: A Safe and Abundant Fuel

With tens of thousands of propane autogas commercial vehicles on the road in the U.S., chances are your fleet drivers have passed a few on their routes. Propane autogas is an engine fuel that powers over 27 million vehicles worldwide. In North America, nearly 19,000 propane vehicles are equipped with ROUSH CleanTech propane fuel systems. Why propane? Because it’s safe and abundant.

Propane Autogas is Safe

Propane autogas is a nontoxic, non-carcinogenic and non-corrosive fuel. The Environmental Protection Agencyclassifies the fuel as a non-contaminant.ROUSH CleanTech vehicles come equipped with a dedicated liquid propane autogas fuel system that consists of the fuel rail assembly, fuel line assembly, fuel tank assembly and the powertrain control system. These vehicles are outfitted with an automatic shut-off feature that prevents fuel flow to the engine when it’s not running.

All of ROUSH CleanTech’s propane autogas vehicles meet and exceed National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Propane autogas vehicle fuel tanks are 20 times more puncture-resistant than diesel tanks and can withstand four times the pressure.

With modern propane autogas systems, the propane remains in a liquid state until it gets to the cylinder. This has alleviated cold start issues associated with vapor technology propane systems of the past. A propane autogas fuel system provides unaided cold weather starts to -40 degrees Fahrenheit. Organizations have reported that in sub-zero temperatures, their propane autogas vehicles start up immediately.

Propane autogas engines are noticeably quieter, creating a safer environment for the driver. Vehicles fueled by propane autogas reduce noise levels by about half compared to a diesel engine, allowing drivers to better hear passengers while in operation.

Propane Autogas is Abundant

Propane autogas is the leading alternative fuel in the United States and the third most commonly used vehicle fuel, following gasoline and diesel. More than 90 percent of the nation’s supply is produced domestically, with an additional 7 percent imported from Canada.Fueling with American-made propane autogas helps the nation’s energy security goals and reduces the nation’s dependence on imported oil. Almost 75 percent of propane used in the U.S. comes from natural gas refining, and the remaining comes from petroleum during the refining process. The U.S. has an abundance which will drive price stability for many years. In fact, our nation exports propane. In 2017, the United States — the world’s largest exporter of propane — exported 905,000 barrels per day.

Many companies choose private on-site refueling due to the convenience and low cost. Installing propane autogas fueling infrastructure costs less than any other fueling station option, including gasoline and diesel. Because of its EPA classification as a non-contaminant, propane infrastructure has fewer compliance requirements than conventional fuels, meaning there is no costly government monitoring involved. Two other options are public fueling, with thousands of fueling stations located across the U.S., or a fueling service, with a propane provider refilling vehicles on-site.

By fueling with propane autogas, drivers can avoid the spills that result from diesel or gasoline fueling as well as the resulting fuel odor on their clothes and hands. Unlike gasoline or diesel, propane autogas is part of a closed-loop system, meaning the fuel is never exposed to air and won’t spill. Plus, fueling is quick; a propane autogas vehicle fuels at 8 to 10 gallons per minute, a similar rate to diesel.

Fueling with American-made propane autogas helps the nation’s energy security goals. It’s a transportation fuel that’s abundant and safe for parking company fleets across the nation. It also provides economic and environmental benefits, which you can learn about here [LINK TO OTHER TWO ADVERTORIALS “Reduce Costs with Propane Autogas Vehicles” and “Propane Engines Reach Record Low Emissions”].
