NPA Honors PCC Fellow Mary Smith, PE with Harwood Leadership & Legends Award

 

 

Lifetime of Industry Leadership Celebrated at WLF


    

Washington, DC (February 11, 2020)— The National Parking Association (NPA) honored Mary Smith, PE, PCC, of Walker Consultants with the parking industry’s highest honor, the Harwood Leadership & Legends Award. The award was presented to Smith at the 2020 NPA Winter Leadership Forum. This prestigious national honor recognizes lifelong leadership, excellence and integrity in the parking industry.

NPA President Christine Banning, IOM, CAE said, “Mary Smith is being honored for a lifetime achievement for her leadership and contributions in the professional field of parking and engineering. She is a dedicated leader who has contributed significantly to industry thought leadership and NPA and the parking industry. Mary is an internationally- recognized, thought leader on parking and parking planning.”

Mary Smith, PE, PCC, is a principal and SVP with Walker Consultants. She is the principal author of the groundbreaking book on mixed used parking Shared Parking. She is the principal author of the newest edition of Shared Parking. Her foundational work on ADA requirements and parking geometrics have long been recognized as fundamental cornerstones of the parking industry. She was inducted as a PCC Fellow in 1984and served as Chair of NPA’s Parking Consultants Council (PCC) in 1989. She received a Distinguished Service Award from NPA in 1987. She is active in ULI and ITE. Smith earned her Bachelor’s degree from Purdue University.

Smith is widely acknowledged as one of the leading parking planners and functional designers in the world and is generally considered the parking industry’s “go to” person on vehicle sizes and parking dimensions, parking under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and more recently compliance with the Manual On Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

 

NPA’s Board of Directors chose to honor Mary for her outstanding contribution to the body of knowledge that defines the parking industry and transportation planning.  Nicolle Judge, NPA Board Chair said, “Mary represents the best of this industry as a professional dedicated to effective parking planning, congestion management, best practices and smart regulations that cities depend upon.” Judge added, “Mary is highly-respected. Her knowledge and expertise advance   the parking industry’s storehouse of knowledge for architects, engineers, planners and parking professionals.”

 

Smith is active in all phases of parking planning and design for parking projects worldwide. Since 2010, she consulted on projects in Abu Dhabi, China, Dubai, Egypt, Indonesia, Korea, Kuwait, Malaysia, Qatar, Russia, and Turkey. She has particular expertise in pedestrian and vehicular circulation, wayfinding and flow capacity in mega-structures, and the integration of parking management, operations and functional design.

 

About the Award

NPA’s Board of Directors established the Brett Harwood Leadership & Legends Award in 2013 to honor lifetime achievement in parking industry leadership. Smith is the seventh recipient of the award and was honored February 8th at the association’s Winter Leadership Forum.
