About Broad Ripple
One of the seven cultural districts of Indianapolis, Broad Ripple is known for its unique shops, dining, and nightclubs. It is also a favorite stop on the Monon Trail, a popular shared-use path from the former Monon railroad line, which once connected Indianapolis to Chicago. Bicyclists, walkers, runners, wheelchair users, and inline skaters can often be found on the 27-mile-long paved trail.
In March 2022, the City of Indianapolis broke ground on $6.73 million in improvements to the Broad Ripple area to support the area’s continued growth. Along with stormwater management, the project includes the first phase of the River Walk project, which will connect Broad Ripple Park to the Monon Trail.
Even long-time Indianapolis residents who know Broad Ripple might not know some of these facts!
- The area’s name comes from the poem “Broad Ripple” by James Whitcomb Riley, about a picturesque fishing trip “beyond the heat and dust of town.”
- Broad Ripple Park’s “Bark Park” was the first dog park in Indianapolis. The site has been a popular place for furry companions to stretch all four legs since 1999.
- The Broad Ripple Art Fair celebrated its 50th year in 2022. This nationally ranked, highly selective, juried art fair has been held (with the exception of 2020) every year since 1971. The fair also benefits the Indianapolis Art Center as its largest annual fundraiser.
- From 1906 until 1908, Broad Ripple Park was home to an amusement park similar to Coney Island with roller coasters, water rides, carousels, and shows. A fire in 1908 brought a quick end to the uninsured amusement park. Another amusement park took place in 1911, and the area continued offering similar attractions until 1945. Animal figures from the park’s carousel continue to delight children on the top floor of Children’s Museum of Indianapoliswhere the carousel has been refurbished.
- Famous alums of Broad Ripple High School include television host David Letterman and architect Michael Graves.
