Europe’s first solar car park with carbon-friendly construction to open for public use

Europe’s first solar car park with carbon-friendly construction to open for public use

  • Wiltshire Council debuts the first low-carbon wooden framed Solar Car Park installation
  • Solar Car Park at Five Rivers Health & Wellbeing Centre in Salisbury will contribute over 10% of the centre’s overall electricity usage and save £50,000 on annual bills
  • Carbon footprint of the installation and end of life disposal is minimised through the use of alternative frame materials, bifacial solar panels and sustainable ground anchor system, without concrete
  • Five Rivers also becomes the first leisure centre in the UK to install 3ti’s award-winning Papilio3 pop-up solar car park that can fast charge up to 12 EVs simultaneously.

Leatherhead, 4 March 2024 – 3ti®, the UK’s leading designer, installer, funder and operator of Solar Car Parks (SCPs) is installing the first large-scale SCP in Europe to be constructed from sustainable Glulam timber beams and Glass-Glass solar panels. Opening to the public in April, the new SCP at Wiltshire Council’s Five Rivers Health & Wellbeing Centre is a significant leap in maximising the lifetime sustainability of solar installations and showcases several advanced technologies that revolutionise the construction, efficiency and visual appeal of SCPs.

The new SCP structure is made from Glulam, renewable, recyclable wood laminations bonded together to offer a natural alternative to steel or concrete. The engineered timber affords significant advantages over structural steel; it is three times stronger and a third lighter, and uses only a tenth of the energy it would take to produce an equivalent steel beam, contributing to a more sustainable building process. The material has minimal environmental impact from its production, is highly repairable, and is an excellent biofuel at the end of its life, further minimising waste.

As part of the construction, 3ti has used special Spirafix™ ground anchors to secure the SCP structure, without using conventional concrete bases or steel piles. This achieves significant carbon savings, speeds up the installation process, is more durable and can be recycled or properly disposed of once the anchors reach the end of their lifecycle.

The solar installation at Five Rivers comprises three gullwing solar canopies covering 70 car park spaces, with a combined total capacity of c.220 kWp. The leisure centre will use 100% of the solar generation on-site, which will contribute approximately 10% of overall electricity demand at the site, saving around £50,000 a year on electricity bills. In its first year, the Five Rivers SCP is expected to generate 186MWh of electricity, enough to drive 679,856 miles in a modern EV, saving 36 tonnes of carbon emissions – the equivalent of planting nearly 600 trees and powering 50 homes.

The canopies are fitted with transparent Glass-Glass solar panels from German manufacturer, Solarwatt®. The panels offer high efficiency and long-term yields thanks to their bifacial technology, which means solar energy is captured on both sides of the panel increasing total energy generation. The solar cells are embedded in a highly durable Glass-Glass composite protecting them from challenging environmental and mechanical stress, including snow and hailstorms, and are ammonia and salt mist resistant.

In addition to its large scale SCP, Five Rivers recently became the first leisure facility in the UK to install 3ti’s award-winning Papilio3®pop-up solar car park and EV charging hub. Papilio3 is built around a recycled shipping container, and can be installed in under eight hours. It can fast charge 12 EVs at 7, 11 or 22kW simultaneously, ideal for a range of destinations with longer dwell times, removing the reliance on carbon-intense and costly ultra-rapid charge points. Pre-fitted with a range of innovations and safety features, including motion lighting, CCTV, advertising screens and full accessibility for wheelchair users, Papilio3 can be rented on a monthly basis from 3ti.

Philip McMullan, Senior Technical Lead on Major Energy Projects at Wiltshire Council, said: “We have invested heavily in sustainability to achieve our 2030 carbon neutral goals. The new solar installations at Five Rivers will help reduce our carbon footprint and support the local community with the transition to zero emission motoring by strengthening the county’s EV charging infrastructure.”

Tim Evans, Founder & CEO at 3ti, adds: “Our job is to champion workplace and destination EV charging to promote a ‘charge where you stop’ mentality across the UK, while supporting customers to achieve their sustainability goals. Better EV charging infrastructure at destinations with long dwell times – offices, hospitals and leisure facilities like Five Rivers – will encourage greater EV adoption rates; it’s refreshing to see Wiltshire Council adopting such a forward-thinking approach, and we are honoured to play a part in their sustainability vision.

“We are constantly evolving our SCP products and are proud to feature these innovative new designs, construction materials and techniques at Five Rivers. Introducing these features means we can offer better durability and versatility than conventional materials and significantly reduce carbon emissions generated across the entire product lifecycle. This installation marks a major milestone on our journey to supporting customers and society as a whole; we will continue to work with facilities around the UK to roll out installations to support future generations and ‘leave something better behind®’.”

88% of U.S Drivers Avoid Paying for Parking, New ParkMobile Study Reveals

February 27, 2024

88% of U.S Drivers Avoid Paying for Parking, New Study Reveals

According to a survey conducted by the most used parking app in the U.S., ParkMobile, 75% of drivers have been deterred from going out because of bad parking despite 85% of spaces sitting empty

ATLANTA, Feb. 27, 2024  — ParkMobile, the most used parking app in the U.S. and part of the EasyPark Group, conducted a survey to understand the parking experiences of U.S. drivers. The study highlights the frustration that drivers experience because of poor parking infrastructure, with 88% of drivers seeking to avoid paying for parking. With search times taking around 10 minutes on average, the difficulty of finding and paying for parking deters 75% of drivers from traveling or attending social experiences.

Study respondents also highlighted removing uncertainty from the parking journey would be a positive draw for consumers. Among drivers that avoid paying for parking, 67% would be willing to pay if a parking space was able to be reserved in advance. When asked about coordinating these reservations, 84% of respondents who have used more than one mobile parking app in the past year would prefer one app to handle all their parking needs, including reserving mass transit and event parking. ParkMobile’s offerings have already catered to this consumer demand by providing parking reservation for street parking, garages, and stadium events.

“American cities are filled with both overtaxed city-center parking in high demand and sprawling underused garages and surface lots that are often constructed without information about the parking experiences of modern consumers,” said Chris Camp, Chief Commercial Officer of EasyPark Group. “These choices negatively impact traffic, the environment and urban vibrancy, and should be considered as part of a holistic approach to building sustainable city cores. At ParkMobile, we are dedicated to making cities more livable and we feel data insights are one way to make more informed consumer decisions and better planned infrastructure.”

Inconsistent rules and parking payment systems increase difficulty for drivers and disincentivize engaging with parking infrastructure. While 88% of respondents state they rarely pay for parking, sentiment towards paid parking changes if additional context can be provided. If paid parking ensured improved transportation, including improved bike lanes, 70% of respondents would be willing to pay. Additionally, the survey highlights that almost half of respondents (46%) are unaware that free parking is funded through local resident taxes and 64% of respondents would be more willing to pay for parking if it meant lower taxes.

“ParkMobile, as a part of EasyPark Group, has seen the need to advance parking infrastructure through technology and insights. As part of this advancement there is the opportunity to educate drivers and municipalities about the realities of their existing parking ecosystems and what is possible for the future. Implementing models of open market parking and offering Parking Data as a Service provides streamlined engagement with parking technology and is a step toward improving cities’ relationships with parking,” said Camp.

Since being founded in 2008, ParkMobile has processed over 120 billion minutes of parking in North America. ParkMobile works with cities to provide real-time parking data and trends to better plan their urban design. This includes some of the two million parking spaces across the country, in over 600 cities and municipalities and 140 colleges and universities.

The study was conducted by ParkMobile with over 2,000 respondents located across the U.S. Respondents included drivers of various ages that drive at least two days per week on average to represent those most aware of their parking experiences. Flowbird: Charleston, SC Updates Its Parking System with Effortless Digital Solutions

New touchscreens and mobile payment options offer faster convenience

Charleston, SC — The City of Charleston, South Carolina has announced an exciting upgrade to its parking system in partnership with Flowbird Group, the leader in curbside management and urban mobility solutions. The City is updating its parking system with modernized touch-screen pay-by-plate parking kiosks, fully equipped with the industry’s latest technology. Additionally, the City will be offering two new digital payment options, the Flowbird mobile payment app and Pay-by-Text! The upgrade is a part of City’s continued efforts to enhance the customer service experience with a modernized solution.

The updated parking system will feature solar-powered parking kiosks with a 9.7” full color touch display available in all City-owned surface lots. The touch screen display has the look and feel of a tablet, walking users step-by-step through the transaction process.

The new parking kiosks will introduce a ‘pay-by-plate’ parking system. This means that users will no longer be required to return to their car to display a receipt on the dashboard. Instead, all they need is their license plate.

“The City of Charleston is excited about the opportunity to upgrade our parking meter technology to improve the parking experience for our citizens and those who visit our wonderful city,” said Director of Traffic and Transportation Robert Somerville.

The City is also excited to announce the release of two other digital parking solutions, the Flowbird Mobile Payment App and Pay-by-Text!

The Flowbird App allows patrons to pay for parking from their mobile devices, receive text notifications when time is about to expire, and extend their time without having to visit a parking kiosk. Designed as a true mobility app, the Flowbird App features a map-based user interface, integrated with Waze and other navigation systems to guide users to their preferred parking location.

The app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store.

Pay-by-Text is an easy-to-use web-based solution that allows drivers to pay for their parking session directly from their phone – without creating an account or downloading an app!

By implementing modernized parking solutions with convenient payment options, the City will be able to better manage parking turnover and visitor influx during peak periods and provide a more user-friendly experience. The addition of digital payment options will bring a consistent and higher level of customer service to the parking public.

Clearwater, Florida Launches Pay by Text Solution – No App or Account Required

New parking payment option released ahead of Spring Break

Clearwater, Florida — The City of Clearwater, Florida has released Pay by Text, the latest advancement in the City’s parking convenience options, in partnership with Flowbird, the City’s parking kiosk provider. Pay by Text is an easy-to-use web-based solution that allows drivers to pay for their parking session directly from their phone without creating an account or downloading an app.

This latest feature adds another convenient way to pay when parking in city-owned parking spaces, lots, and garages in Clearwater, alongside the pay-on-foot parking meters and mobile payment apps.

How Pay by Text Works:

  1. Park your vehicle
  2. Text ‘CLEARWATER’ to 727563
  3. Receive a secure link to input your parking details – including license plate number, duration, and payment information
  4. Confirm the details to start your parking session

Information is sent to parking enforcement who can verify the vehicle is in compliance. That’s it! There is no need to create an account, download an app, or visit a kiosk.

“We are very excited about the launch of the Pay by Text service – just in time for visitors coming in for Spring Break,” said Clearwater Parking Manager, Jeremy Alleshouse, “This feature gives our residents and visitors even more convenience when they park in our bright and beautiful city.”

The Pay by Text solution is PCI-DSS certified, giving assurance to parkers that their data is protected. Once the parking session is complete, the payment information is encrypted and the card data is not stored. To provide the parker with future convenience, their mobile device can store the card number in an encrypted manner so the number does not have to be re-entered the next time a parking session is performed.

By implementing modernized parking solutions with convenient payment options, the City will be able to better manage parking turnover and visitor influx during peak periods. The City can help motorists stay in compliance with parking enforcement, reducing the number of citations.

Along with pay by text, visitors may still use the parking kiosks to pay for their parking session, as well as the Flowbird mobile app and Parkmobile.

Pay by Text is now live throughout the City of Clearwater.

The Banks Partners with TKH Security for Advanced Parking Solution

February 16, 2024

The Banks Partners with TKH Security for Advanced Parking Solution

Cheshire, CT –  – TKH Security (formerly Park Assist) is proud to announce our collaboration with Hamilton County at The Banks in Cincinnati, Ohio. Currently, we’re in the process of installing our Automated Parking Guidance System (APGS ) at The Banks parking garage, featuring more than 4,000 spaces on two levels.

While the Ohio River is considered the “Main Street” of Cincinnati, the Riverfront is its heart. Breaking ground in 2008, The Banks represents a successful partnership between Hamilton County and the City of Cincinnati. It’s a premier mixed-use development located along the scenic Ohio River in downtown Cincinnati, offering a vibrant blend of residential, commercial, and entertainment spaces. With its picturesque atmosphere and prime location, The Banks contributes billions to the local economy, including $48 million from two recent Taylor Swift concerts.

“Spanning more than a half of a mile between the Bengals Paycor Stadium and the Reds Great American Ball Park, The Banks is a destination for sports fans to downtown employees alike. The parking garage at The Banks plays a crucial role in accommodating those parkers, and our goal is to enhance their experience with our APGS,” said Coley Nash, Regional Sales Executive, Northeast.

From garage entry to open space, our APGS leverages advanced technology to streamline parking facility management and improve the overall parker experience. At the heart of our system is the M5 camera-based smart sensor, capable of monitoring up to six parking spaces simultaneously. With 99%+ accuracy, these sensors provide operators with real-time occupancy data, ensuring accurate information about space availability. Green and red LED lights on the sensors navigate parkers to the available spaces, reducing the time to park by up to 63%.

“We’re pleased to be selected to partner with Hamilton County and the City of Cincinnati on The Banks’ APGS project,” said Nash. “We anticipate installation completion by Q4 2024.”

The Banks’ APGS package also includes:

  • Park Alerts, which notifies operators when certain vehicles enter the building including VIP guests and persons on the blocked list,
  • Park Finder, combined with license plate recognition (LPR) technology, assists drivers with locating their vehicle in seconds via touchscreen kiosks, a connected parking app, or a finder-enabled pay station,
  • An API package that provides operators with a secure connection to a limitless set of third-party parking related solutions,
  • And INX with real time dashboards and business intelligence for operators to maximize and streamline parking operations.

TKH Security is proud to partner with local Cincinnati companies on this project.
