Parking Vet Writes Another Book from Behind the Scenes of a Parking Authority!

Following his successful and groundbreaking first book, which is commonly described as “a parking -cult classic memoir”, The Quirky World of Parking, Larry J. Cohen, CAPP, a certified parking professional (yes, there is such athing) and 40-year veteran of the industry, has unearthed even more outrageous and crazy stories. Among the many stories:

  • You will findout why Cohen was featured on the HBO show, How to with John
  • Is there really a meter fairy?
  • The partnership between pickle ball and parking
  • Who is the three-finger man?

The book is loaded with tons of interesting and crazy stories in this $100 billion a year industry.

As Cohen says, “My goal is to provide a fascinating look into the business of parking from an industry insider perspective and share the many crazy, funny and sad encounters we deal with every day,”

When you drive your car and have trouble finding a space, or hate paying for parking, or get a parking ticket, or worseyet, towed, this quirky – as the title says – book on parking will give you a whole new perspective on something you probablycan’t live without, but know very little about.

Cohen’s been responsible for parking at universities, hospitals, and municipalities during his long career in major cities along the East Coast. He has served on the Boards of the International Parking and Mobility Institute, Middle AtlanticParking Association, and Pennsylvania Parking Association and is currently the Executive Director of the Lancaster ParkingAuthority in bucolic Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Parkopedia and Blink Charging work together to make seamless EV charging accessible to more North American drivers

September 22, 2023

Parkopedia and Blink Charging work together to make seamless EV charging accessible to more North American drivers

  • Collaboration sees Parkopedia adding nearly 12,000 Blink public chargers to its in-car EV service
  • Parkopedia grows its global network of charger locations, while Blink services are delivered directly to EV drivers, with charger locations being visible from vehicle head units
  • This cooperation provides US drivers with a seamless charging experience across a greater number of chargers and facilitates the collection of new charging data, enabling Parkopedia to provide more accurate charger availability predictions to drivers

22 September 2023 – London, UK / Florida, USA

Connected car service provider Parkopedia and one of the largest Charge Point Operators (CPO) in the US, Blink Charging, are working together to provide EV drivers with an improved charging experience. Parkopedia users are now able to access nearly 12,000 Blink public chargers across more than 4,000 US locations, directly through their vehicle head units, providing EV drivers with the greatest possible convenience and charger visibility.

This agreement further increases Parkopedia’s presence in the North American market, with the company expanding its ‘Park and Charge’ EV service for its various automaker customers. Additionally, the service gains ‘live’ availability data from Blink’s network of chargers, enabling the company to provide drivers with increasingly accurate parking and charging availability predictions, as part of a more complete EV charging experience.

This addresses US EV drivers’ most significant concerns, cited in the 2023 Global Driver Survey, including nearly 60% being concerned about finding charging away from home and more than 1 in 3 drivers struggling to find EV public charging locations “all the time” or “very frequently” – both higher figures than any other featured country in thesurvey. Furthermore, 53% of US EV drivers shared they have been unable to charge when needed previously due to chargers being occupied by other vehicles on arrival.

More concerningly, 73% of American EV drivers have run out of charge before – again more than drivers in any other country surveyed. As a result, 92% of US drivers would be more likely to purchase an EV if it had ‘Park and Charge’ functionality to simplify the process of finding suitable charging. These survey figures highlight the value of providing seamless charging experiences to American drivers, helping more drivers transition to EVs and reducing charging anxiety by preventing them from running out of charge or failing to locate suitable chargers while travelling.

Parkopedia regularly validates parking and charging data to ensure that accuracy is as high as possible, with ‘dynamic data’ helping to provide drivers with valuable parking and charging predictions for when spaces orcharging stations are most likely available. Parkopedia and Blink are exploring the scope of the collaboration to provide even more solutions in future, with the ambition of further streamlining the process of parking and charging for EV drivers.

Commenting on the new agreement, Adam Woolway, Head of EV at Parkopedia, said: “We recognise that parking and charging are increasingly interlinked and we are continuing to simplify the charging experience for EV drivers,as seen in this new collaboration with Blink. We also recognise the significant challenges facing US EV drivers in particular, highlighted in our 2023 Global Driver Survey with the US topping the table for the majority of charging-related issues – from failing to find chargers to running out of charge. We strongly believe that our connected car services and new integration with Blink will further support drivers and help prevent them from experiencing such issues in the future.”

“Our collaboration with Parkopedia creates a streamlined experience for EV drivers to conveniently access Blink charging stations across North America,” said Mike Battaglia, Chief Revenue Officer for Blink Charging. “The combination of Parkopedia’s excellence in serving drivers through convenience in parking accessibility and Blink’s extensive range of public EV chargers gives EV drivers confidence in finding a reliable charging experience wherever they are. This initiative builds upon our strategy of making it easy for EV drivers to locate Blink chargers through a variety of platforms.”

ParkMobile: U.S. Drivers are Eager for a Mobile Payment Solution for Parking to Reduce Driving-Related Stress

September 22, 2023

U.S. Drivers are Eager for a Mobile Payment Solution for Parking to Reduce Driving-Related Stress

According to a survey conducted by the most used parking app in the U.S., ParkMobile, over 74 percent of U.S. drivers desire a smart parking payment experience

Atlanta, GA – – ParkMobile, the most used parking app in the U.S. and part of the EasyPark Group, conducted a survey tracking the parking habits and trends of U.S. drivers. According to the study, 82 percent of drivers across the U.S. note that searching for a parking space is a top stressor when driving in urban environments. Though, of the drivers using parking apps such as ParkMobile to find and pay for parking, drivers’ stress levels drop by nearly 33 percent.

The study found that concerns of paying for parking, including searching for ticket locations when using parking kiosks or meters, are drastically reduced through the integration of mobile payment apps and providers. ParkMobile is expanding its footprint and providing solutions that help drivers find and reserve parking in advance via the reservations platform to create an easier parking experience to meet the demand of the 74 percent of drivers craving the availability of a mobile parking payment solution.

“Searching for parking in dense downtown ecosystems is not only harmful for the environment through increased carbon dioxide emissions but stressful and will ultimately tamper the way drivers view and interact with their cities in the future,” said David Hoyt, managing director of ParkMobile. “Through the integration and adoption of ParkMobile, we’re making cities more livable through our easy-to-use mobile parking solution, so downtowns thrive and residents and visitors feel stress free.”

The report also found that around 80 percent of respondents find it important to be able to use the same parking app across multiple locations and states. Despite this, around 30 percent of respondents are unable to use their preferred mobile payment app for parking across the country as the apps are not always accepted at their parking location. The lack of choice and availability has resulted in many drivers having three or more parking apps installed on their mobile devices to pay for parking in the U.S.

“As part of EasyPark Group, ParkMobile is working to adopt an open market solution, a process that our company has integrated in key cities across Europe. The solution allows for multiple app-based parking providers to be offered in a city, making parking more straightforward while fostering parking technology innovation and placing consumer choice as the top priority. An open market parking model is a key contributor to digital adoption and can drive mobile pay adoption to over 90 percent in cities where it is implemented,” said Hoyt.

Since being founded in 2008, ParkMobile has processed over 98 billion minutes of parking in North America. ParkMobile works with cities to provide real time parking data and trends to better plan their urban design. This includes some of the two million parking spaces across the country, in over 600 cities and municipalities and 140 colleges and universities.

The study was conducted by ParkMobile with over 3,000 respondents located across the U.S. Respondents included drivers aged 16-75 as a representative sample of over 261 million monthly parkers in the country.

About ParkMobile
ParkMobile, LLC is the leading provider of smart parking and mobility solutions in North America and part of the global parking tech company, EasyPark Group. Icon Parking Chairman & CEO John Smith Named National Parking Association “Innovator of the Year”

September 20, 2023

Icon Parking Chairman & CEO John Smith Named National Parking Association “Innovator of the Year”

NEW YORK—-John D. Smith, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Icon Parking, has been presented with the prestigious Innovator of the Year award by the National Parking Association (NPA) at their annual convention this week in New Orleans. The NPA’s Innovator of the Year award is presented to a parking industry leader who has demonstrated significant industry or organization success; advanced innovative ideas, products, or practices; or has demonstrated exemplary leadership in and positively contributed to the industry.

NPA President & CEO, Christine Banning, IOM, CAE, said, “John is an exemplar of a great leader and innovator. His dedication to the industry and his innovative approach to technology, customer service and safety demonstrated a way to serve, scale, and sustain dynamic parking services during and beyond the pandemic.”

“My team’s commitment, collaboration, and entrepreneurial spirit have played a vital role in my success,” said Icon Parking Chairman and CEO John Smith. “Furthermore, I am genuinely humbled to be among the accomplished individuals who have come before me and received this award.”

The NPA recognized Mr. Smith’s application of his knowledge and experience in growing companies and brands and his extensive leadership background, which he leveraged to transform a 76-year-old traditional parking operation into a digitally enabled consumer-centric brand elevating the customer experience.

Smith joined Icon as CEO just before the pandemic, following successful executive roles in retail, hospitality, gaming, and restaurants. He had the challenge of starting this transformation as a worldwide health emergency hit. And as he has done many times, Smith combined his business expertise, an understanding of the customer and the marketplace, and a respect for his team members with his own determination to transform Icon Parking.

Smith worked with his Icon colleagues to leverage digital technology during the pandemic to go from 99%+ paper tickets to 99+% digital transactions under Icon’s ParkSafe program, protecting both his team and Icon’s customers. The result was safe interactions at the height of the pandemic which have endured post-pandemic due to the removal of significant friction from the customer journey, while creating major efficiencies for Icon – a win-win.

The results of Smith’s innovative approach to the parking industry, his personal leadership style, and business expertise are exemplified by Icon’s TrustPilot scores of 4.5 out of 5 across the garage portfolio, ranking Icon as a leader in customer satisfaction in the US parking industry.

Smith helped his team create new parking products that never existed in the New York City or U.S. parking industry and remain unique to Icon through leveraging digital technology and analytics, such as monthly subscriptions and instant consumption. Icon’s digital initiatives now drive digital demand directly to consumers, who can easily book parking, resulting in Icon generating significant digital traffic.

Under Smith’s leadership, Icon implemented dynamic pricing and mix optimization algorithms and introduced new performance metrics to normalize and measure results.

In addition to reshaping the way Icon does business, Smith in April led a management buyout, making Icon the nation’s largest minority-owned parking management and transportation services provider. He has positioned Icon to scale nationally to service the unmet needs of corporate, educational institutions, event and sports venues, professional sports leagues and government entities who have committed to spend billions with minority suppliers but are not able to partner with vendors of scale with a national footprint. This has provided a roadmap for owners and entrepreneurs, particularly minorities, to leverage private direct investments to acquire and build businesses of scale to close the wealth gap in America.

About Icon Parking

Founded in 1947, Icon is the largest minority-owned parking management and mobility services provider in the New York City metro and one of the largest in the nation with almost 200 locations. Icon leverages its digital and advanced analytics platform to provide parking operations, management, and related services to clients through extraordinarily engaged team members across Commercial Office Buildings and Real Estate, Food and Beverage, Municipalities, Sports and Entertainment, Retail, and Healthcare, resulting in exceptional customer, resident, and tenant experiences. Icon’s mission is to simplify city life, one customer at a time by connecting them to where they live, work, and play; and believes, “Parking is just the start!” For more information, please go to www.iconparking.com.
