Passport shakes up C-suite as Charlotte tech company plans for more growth

Written by Symone Graham, Staff Writer for Charlotte Business Journal. Originally posted to Charlotte Business Journal on Mar. 6, 2024.

Passport has made more changes to its leadership team as the Charlotte company gears up for growth.

Passport, a software company specializing in mobile payments for transportation, has named co-founder Khristian Gutierrez its new CEO. He returns to Passport after departing in 2021 from his role there as chief revenue officer, a position he held for a decade. Gutierrez replaces Brian Mooney, who has served as Passport’s interim CEO and a member of its board of directors since 2019.

Bob Youakim, Passport’s other co-founder and former CEO, will also take on a new role. He has transitioned from board chair to executive chairman. In that position, he will leverage his background to assist in the company’s growth, new market opportunities and innovation efforts.

Gutierrez said their return to operational roles at the company was fueled by their vision to sustain the legacy and future of Passport.

“As co-founders, Bob and I have a deep-rooted connection to Passport, and in this pivotal time of growth within the industry and the company, we are stepping back into operational roles to navigate through this new chapter,” Gutierrez told CBJ.

Prior to returning to Passport, Gutierrez served as CEO of Charlotte public-safety software company CivicEye. The startup, which launched in January 2022, aims to modernize law enforcement and prosecution agencies’ old-fashioned data infrastructure.

Gutierrez is now serving in an advisory role at CivicEye, where he will still be able to support the company’s goals and growth. Joshua South, formerly head of operations at CivicEye, was named president, he said.

“This shift allows me to dedicate the necessary focus to Passport while still contributing to CivicEye’s mission and success,” Gutierrez said.

The transition follows multiple changes made previously to Passport’s executive team. In February 2022, the company named Sathish Gaddipati as its chief technology officer, replacing Brad Powers who was CTO at Passport for a decade. Powers transitioned that year to chief innovation officer, which was a new position for the company.

Then in September 2021, the firm hired Doug Rogers as chief revenue officer, replacing Gutierrez. The company also named Vanna Krantz, a former Disney executive, as its chief financial officer that year, replacing Hunter Louis.

Established in 2010, Passport works in parking enforcement, payments and permitting. Micromobility, with e-scooters and bicycles, is another focus.

The leadership shakeup comes as Passport has recognized mobile parking is now more popular in cities, however, enforcement continues to be a major challenge. Passport’s curb management platform allows for cities to gather evidence, issue warnings and citations, and strengthen revenue recovery.

The company is looking to deepen its innovation in the space to meet the increased demand of its technology. Passport’s data also found that nearly 86% of 2023 citations were settled online, signaling the advantages of mobile parking payment methods.

“In this time of transformation, our resolve is stronger than ever to support cities and private operators as they navigate the intricacies of curb management,” Gutierrez said.

Passport works with more than 800 clients across North America and has supported more than 5,000 locations. It has over 150 employees.

Gutierrez said the company is working toward strengthening its client partnerships and focusing on developing new tools that align with its mission.

“We’re building on the strong momentum we’ve established, aiming to lead the way in creating sustainable, efficient and user-friendly urban ecosystems,” he said.

88% of U.S Drivers Avoid Paying for Parking, New ParkMobile Study Reveals

88% of U.S Drivers Avoid Paying for Parking, New Study Reveals

According to a survey conducted by the most used parking app in the U.S., ParkMobile, 75% of drivers have been deterred from going out because of bad parking despite 85% of spaces sitting empty

ATLANTA, Feb. 27, 2024  — ParkMobile, the most used parking app in the U.S. and part of the EasyPark Group, conducted a survey to understand the parking experiences of U.S. drivers. The study highlights the frustration that drivers experience because of poor parking infrastructure, with 88% of drivers seeking to avoid paying for parking. With search times taking around 10 minutes on average, the difficulty of finding and paying for parking deters 75% of drivers from traveling or attending social experiences.

Study respondents also highlighted removing uncertainty from the parking journey would be a positive draw for consumers. Among drivers that avoid paying for parking, 67% would be willing to pay if a parking space was able to be reserved in advance. When asked about coordinating these reservations, 84% of respondents who have used more than one mobile parking app in the past year would prefer one app to handle all their parking needs, including reserving mass transit and event parking. ParkMobile’s offerings have already catered to this consumer demand by providing parking reservation for street parking, garages, and stadium events.

“American cities are filled with both overtaxed city-center parking in high demand and sprawling underused garages and surface lots that are often constructed without information about the parking experiences of modern consumers,” said Chris Camp, Chief Commercial Officer of EasyPark Group. “These choices negatively impact traffic, the environment and urban vibrancy, and should be considered as part of a holistic approach to building sustainable city cores. At ParkMobile, we are dedicated to making cities more livable and we feel data insights are one way to make more informed consumer decisions and better planned infrastructure.”

Inconsistent rules and parking payment systems increase difficulty for drivers and disincentivize engaging with parking infrastructure. While 88% of respondents state they rarely pay for parking, sentiment towards paid parking changes if additional context can be provided. If paid parking ensured improved transportation, including improved bike lanes, 70% of respondents would be willing to pay. Additionally, the survey highlights that almost half of respondents (46%) are unaware that free parking is funded through local resident taxes and 64% of respondents would be more willing to pay for parking if it meant lower taxes.

“ParkMobile, as a part of EasyPark Group, has seen the need to advance parking infrastructure through technology and insights. As part of this advancement there is the opportunity to educate drivers and municipalities about the realities of their existing parking ecosystems and what is possible for the future. Implementing models of open market parking and offering Parking Data as a Service provides streamlined engagement with parking technology and is a step toward improving cities’ relationships with parking,” said Camp.

Since being founded in 2008, ParkMobile has processed over 120 billion minutes of parking in North America. ParkMobile works with cities to provide real-time parking data and trends to better plan their urban design. This includes some of the two million parking spaces across the country, in over 600 cities and municipalities and 140 colleges and universities.

The study was conducted by ParkMobile with over 2,000 respondents located across the U.S. Respondents included drivers of various ages that drive at least two days per week on average to represent those most aware of their parking experiences. Flowbird: Clearwater, Florida Launches Pay by Text Solution – No App or Account Required

Clearwater, Florida Launches Pay by Text Solution – No App or Account Required

New parking payment option released ahead of Spring Break

Clearwater, Florida — The City of Clearwater, Florida has released Pay by Text, the latest advancement in the City’s parking convenience options, in partnership with Flowbird, the City’s parking kiosk provider. Pay by Text is an easy-to-use web-based solution that allows drivers to pay for their parking session directly from their phone without creating an account or downloading an app.

This latest feature adds another convenient way to pay when parking in city-owned parking spaces, lots, and garages in Clearwater, alongside the pay-on-foot parking meters and mobile payment apps.

How Pay by Text Works:

  1. Park your vehicle
  2. Text ‘CLEARWATER’ to 727563
  3. Receive a secure link to input your parking details – including license plate number, duration, and payment information
  4. Confirm the details to start your parking session

Information is sent to parking enforcement who can verify the vehicle is in compliance. That’s it! There is no need to create an account, download an app, or visit a kiosk.

“We are very excited about the launch of the Pay by Text service – just in time for visitors coming in for Spring Break,” said Clearwater Parking Manager, Jeremy Alleshouse, “This feature gives our residents and visitors even more convenience when they park in our bright and beautiful city.”

The Pay by Text solution is PCI-DSS certified, giving assurance to parkers that their data is protected. Once the parking session is complete, the payment information is encrypted and the card data is not stored. To provide the parker with future convenience, their mobile device can store the card number in an encrypted manner so the number does not have to be re-entered the next time a parking session is performed.

By implementing modernized parking solutions with convenient payment options, the City will be able to better manage parking turnover and visitor influx during peak periods. The City can help motorists stay in compliance with parking enforcement, reducing the number of citations.

Along with pay by text, visitors may still use the parking kiosks to pay for their parking session, as well as the Flowbird mobile app and Parkmobile.

Pay by Text is now live throughout the City of Clearwater.

Currently, we’re in the process of installing our Automated Parking Guidance System (APGS ) at The Banks parking garage, featuring more than 4,000 spaces on two levels.

While the Ohio River is considered the “Main Street” of Cincinnati, the Riverfront is its heart. Breaking ground in 2008, The Banks represents a successful partnership between Hamilton County and the City of Cincinnati. It’s a premier mixed-use development located along the scenic Ohio River in downtown Cincinnati, offering a vibrant blend of residential, commercial, and entertainment spaces. With its picturesque atmosphere and prime location, The Banks contributes billions to the local economy, including $48 million from two recent Taylor Swift concerts.

“Spanning more than a half of a mile between the Bengals Paycor Stadium and the Reds Great American Ball Park, The Banks is a destination for sports fans to downtown employees alike. The parking garage at The Banks plays a crucial role in accommodating those parkers, and our goal is to enhance their experience with our APGS,” said Coley Nash, Regional Sales Executive, Northeast.

Carlisle, PA To Update Its Parking System with User-Friendly Solution, Flowbird, in 2024

Carlisle, PA To Update Its Parking System with User-Friendly Solution in 2024

New mobile payment options offer faster convenience than ever before.

Carlisle, Pennsylvania — The Borough of Carlisle, Pennsylvania has announced an exciting upgrade to its parking system in partnership with Butts Ticket Systems and Flowbird Group, the leader in curbside management and urban mobility solutions. The Borough is replacing its aging single-space parking meters with 56 Flowbird Pay-by-Plate Smart Parking Kiosks, fully equipped with the industry’s latest technology. Additionally, the Borough will now be offering three modernized digital payment options, the Flowbird mobile payment app, Pay-by-Text and Extend-by-Text!

The new parking system will feature 56 solar-powered parking kiosks with a 9.7” full color touch display that is accessible for all customers, including meeting ADA standards. The touch screen display has the look and feel of a tablet, walking users step-by-step through the transaction process. To begin, the user simply enters their license plate number and desired length of stay. Payment will now be accepted with either coins or debit/credit card. Once payment has been made, the parking session has started and there is no need to walk back to their vehicle to display a receipt on the dashboard.

Drivers who are making a quick stop to the downtown area have the option to use the ’15 minutes free parking’ option at the kiosks after inputting their license plate number.

A new and exciting feature of the updated pay stations is Extend-by-Text. Once users finish their transaction on the kiosk, they will have the option to input their mobile phone number. When their parking session is about to expire, they will receive a text with the option to add more time remotely without needing to walk back to the pay station.

The Borough is also excited to announce the release of two other digital parking solutions, the Flowbird Mobile Payment App and Pay-by-Text!

The Flowbird App allows patrons to pay for parking from their mobile devices, receive text notifications when time is about to expire, and extend their time without having to visit a parking kiosk. Designed as a true mobility app, the Flowbird App features a map-based user interface, integrated with Waze and other navigation systems to guide users to their preferred parking location.

The app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store.

Pay-by-Text is an easy-to-use web-based solution that allows drivers to pay for their parking session directly from their phone without creating an account or downloading an app.

Here’s how it works: Once the user is parked, they can find a number posted on the side of the kiosk or nearby sign near their parking location. The user simply texts the number provided, immediately receiving a secure link to follow to input their parking details. They enter their license plate number, parking duration and payment information. A confirmation is sent, and their parking session begins. Information is sent to parking enforcement who can verify the vehicle is in compliance. That’s it! There is no need to create an account, download an app, or visit a kiosk.

Paid parking hours throughout the Borough of Carlisle are Monday through Friday, 8AM to 4PM.

By implementing modernized parking solutions with convenient payment options, the Borough will be able to better manage parking turnover and visitor influx during peak periods and provide a more user-friendly experience. The addition of digital payment options will bring a consistent and higher level of customer service to the parking public.

Project management and installation is being managed by Flowbird’s local distribution partner, Butts Ticket Systems, based out of Pennsylvania.

Quercus Technologies: Artificial Intelligence takes control of the new SmartLPR – QAI Inside!

February 08, 2024

Artificial Intelligence takes control of the new SmartLPR: QAI Inside!

The best LPR ever created New%20version%2C%20new%20name_SmartLPR

Quercus Technologies, a forerunner in All-In-One license plate recognition cameras, is proud to announce the launch of its latest innovation, the new version of the SmartLPR system. This advanced license plate recognition system redefines industry standards, introducing novel key features that will mark a new era in vehicle recognition, while maintaining the essential characteristics for which Quercus was the first to market.

With the latest version, we’ve not only made significant improvements to the product, we’ve also changed the name of our cameras, from SmartLPR Access to SmartLPR. The change comes as a result of our decision to go back to the roots of Quercus, consolidating our identity and highlighting the constant evolution of our LPR technology. This new name also represents our determination to lead in the field of artificial intelligence applied to license plate recognition systems.

QAI_greyQuercus is consolidating its role as a forerunner by incorporating its internally-developed Artificial Intelligence technology into the core of its products: QAI Inside! The main innovation is based on the use of artificial intelligence algorithms to detect and recognize license plates (OCR).

With the latest evolution of our technology and integration of artificial intelligence, we’ve also made major improvements to the Free-flow operation mode. These optimizations are taking the camera’s reliability rate to new levels, truly enabling ticketless and barrierless systems to work perfectly. In fact, we now quantify faults in terms of incorrect license numbers per thousand read, instead of one hundred, as had been the practice until now. The combination of advanced license plate recognition capacity and the power of our artificial intelligence has boosted the accuracy and reliability of our system, contributing to more efficient all-around parking management.

SmartLPR_ai

Our system now has the capacity to simultaneously read plates from an unlimited number of countries, doing away with the need to previously specify which ones it should be able to read. This advancement is a landmark, as it makes the system more flexible, and expedites its configuration.

The main goal has always been the same, simplify the experience for operators and enhance that of users. At the heart of this mission is a solid foundation of internal research and development. Our highly specialized team doesn’t just follow technological evolution: they drive it. Constant research, exploration of new frontiers, and the improvement of existing solutions are essential ingredients that define our commitment to ongoing development.

IMAGE QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

Another major advancement is the taking of better-quality images, with higher levels of definition and sharpness. Compared to prior versions, images are now seen with exceptional clarity and a more attractive overall look for operators’ visual perception. Enhanced quality and brightness play a crucial role in creating more vivid, user-friendly images.

QUERCUS FIRST

Throughout the years, we have been pioneers when it comes to launching different solutions that set the pace for the industry, a sign of our undying dedication to innovating. Quercus First (QF) reflects our ongoing commitment to leading with a visionary, even revolutionary, approach.

  • Worldwide Use: With recognition in over 200 countries, this advanced license plate recognition camera redefines geographic limits. With the same model, the Smart LPR enables successful implementation in a wide range of settings and conditions, ensuring efficient, accurate responses at the international level.
  • Wide Angle Recognition: Optimal license plate recognition at hard-to-read angles.
  • Dual Lamp – Color and IR reading inside the unit. The camera ensures exceptional performance even in dim conditions, for any type of license plate (reflective and non-reflective, in color or black and white).
  • Motorized Lens: The motorized lens provides exceptional agility and unbeatable accuracy, ensuring optimal image capture in diverse conditions.
  • HRR: The SmartLPR cameras can integrate two license plate recognition units per lane, for double license plate reading. This system, based on an artificial vision algorithm, is called HRR, (High Reliability Recognition). It is a parking system that combines all the characters and digits of the front as well as the rear license plates, enabling complete recognition of the license plate number.
  • IP67: The IP67 Certification guarantees optimal performance, even in challenging weather conditions, or in cases of high levels of dust generated inside the parking facility itself. This ensures the integrity of the system and fault-free operation.

With the SmartLPR License Plate Reader, Quercus Technologies reasserts its position as a leader at the cutting edge of technology, getting the most from the power of AI to offer new license plate recognition solutions. The new era in parking technology marks another example of Quercus’ ongoing responsibility toward constant improvement and meeting the changing needs of its customers around the world.
