CivicSmart Presents:

Automated, Convenient Parking For All

Automated On-street Parking – Transform the Parking Experience to Benefit Both Motorists and Cities

On-street parking is often an unpleasant and frustrating experience for motorists and is repeatedly ranked near the top of wish lists to find a better solution. Cities need to deploy massive resources to monitor violations and manage parking. With CivicSmart’s patented technologies and automated parking solutions, the parking experience becomes as simple as driving through an electronic toll lane. CivicSmart’s automated parking solutions use advanced radar and edge AI with LPR or RFID to detect the entry and exit times of a parking session, identify the vehicle occupying the space, and apply parking rules associated with the space and vehicle.

Convenience, Convenience, Convenience!

No more struggling to find a parking meter or weighing the odds of getting a ticket versus the hassle of finding a meter and navigating how to pay when deciding to pay for a space. Motorists can simply park and walk to their destination and automatically pay for actual parking time used. They can also pay with any allowed payment type including their favorite app, parking account, or a parking meter. They can even pay at a later time after the parking session is completed and get a courtesy reminder if they forget to pay before fines are applied. A parking transaction is simply a purchase of time for a parking space, and with CivicSmart, it will be a consumer-friendly transaction! CivicSmart’s automated parking solutions support many other features including way finding, car finding, virtual permits, etc.

Unprecedented Efficiency and Real-time Data for Cities and Operators

Beat enforcement, whether on-foot or in-car, has been the norm since the advent of managed on-street parking over 85 years ago, but now there is a better way! With CivicSmart’s automated parking solutions, cities and operators have data at their fingertips and can use either automated or directed enforcement. Cities and operators have detailed and highly accurate real-time data on parking usage.

Curb Management and Analytics

With so many complex demands on curb space, from loading zones to rideshares, on-street parking, store front pickups, permit parking, mixed-use lanes, etc., cities need to figure out how to utilize the curb assets for the highest value uses. This starts with detailed and accurate data on parking patterns and uses. The supply-demand dynamic can vary widely from one block to next, based on time of day, or even among spaces in the same block. CivicSmart’s solutions continuously provide granular data and advanced analytics to develop key insights – no more guessing or using unreliable proxy data such as payments. This helps cities manage demand and supply through optimal pricing, space allocation, dynamic pricing, parking codes, etc., and adjust these as demand patterns change over time.

Minimal Footprint with Reduced Street Assets

CivicSmart’s advanced sensors are available in many form factors including bollard, curb mount, pole mount, and subterranean to suit your streetscape ensure an aesthetic fit. They require minimal footprint and reduce overall street assets for your city.

CivicSmart Selected by the City of Colorado Springs, Colorado to Upgrade its Smart Parking Program

January 16, 2020

CivicSmart Selected by the City of Colorado Springs, Colorado to Upgrade its Smart Parking Program

MILWAUKEE, WI. (January 16, 2020) – Duncan Parking Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of CivicSmart, Inc., (“CivicSmart”) is pleased to announce that it has contracted with the City of Colorado Springs, CO, to upgrade the City’s Smart Parking program.

Following a successful field trial and a competitive procurement, CivicSmart was selected to upgrade the City’s existing smart meters with Liberty Next Gen (LNG) Smart Parking Meters, as well as provide new Meter Housings.  In order to help advance the sophistication of the City’s parking program, the City is installing Vehicle Detection Sensors to provide real-time information about on-street occupancy and availability.

Installation of the first 1,100 LNG meters and sensors is occurring in the first quarter of the year with a total of 2,500 LNG meters and sensors being installed when the project is complete.

“Smart meters are an established part of our parking program, and our residents and visitors expect the convenience of paying by credit and debit card,” said Scott Lee, Parking Enterprise Director of the City of Colorado Springs.  “But we need to be careful stewards of parking funds, and the opportunity to reduce our upfront, ongoing and spare battery costs made financial and operational sense.  Our trial with CivicSmart convinced us that they had the innovative technology and service to meet our requirements.”

Mike Nickolaus, President and CEO of CivicSmart, added, “Colorado Springs has operated a smart parking program for years and we are delighted that an educated client evaluated and recognized the advantages our LNG meter has to offer.  Further, the deployment of our patented vehicle sensors will unlock an array of Smart Parking and Smart City benefits and keep Colorado Springs on the cutting edge of innovation.”

CivicSmart Supports Multiple Parking Payment Apps for the City of Atlanta and ATL Plus

January 12, 2020

CivicSmart Supports Multiple Parking Payment Apps for the City of Atlanta and ATL Plus

MILWAUKEE, WI.  – Duncan Parking Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of CivicSmart, Inc., (“CivicSmart”) is pleased to announce the enhancement of its AutoISSUE handheld enforcement software to support the City of Atlanta’s acceptance of multiple parking payment apps for on-street parking.

The City of Atlanta recently joined a small but growing number of progressive cities that recognize the desirability of allowing motorists to pay for on-street parking using the app of their choice.

In addition to the City’s long-time acceptance of ParkMobile, the City and its operator, ATL Plus, continue to build on the success and innovation of the City’s “Smart Parking” program by expanding to accept payments from the PayByPhone and Passport apps.

To seamlessly accept these payments, parking enforcement officers need to see real-time payment information in their enforcement handheld software.  For years, CivicSmart’s AutoISSUE software has incorporated payments from Atlanta’s Flowbird paystations and the ParkMobile app.  The most recent release of AutoISSUE software for the City adds payments from PayByPhone and Passport, with work underway to integrate SpotAngels mobile payments in the first quarter of 2020.

The AutoISSUE handheld devices contain a License Plate Recognition engine that instantly checks the paid status of each plate across any payment platform.  If a plate is not paid, the officer can efficiently and accurately issue a citation by pre-populating most of the data.  Prior to finalizing the citation, the handheld software performs a final, “last second check” to prevent an incorrect citation from being issued if a payment was just made.  Officer location and vehicle images are also captured to further document citation details.

The City’s and ATL Plus’ parking system is designed with the highest standards to ensure that every citation that is issued is valid.

In addition to integrating with multiple payment systems, the AutoISSUE software integrates with ATL Plus vehicles equipped with Mobile LPR systems so vehicles that overstay, don’t pay or don’t have permits can be automatically flagged on the officers’ handheld software.  This prevents MLPR vehicles from having to stop to issue citations themselves which can cause double-parking, congestion, and vehicle and pedestrian safety risks.

The AutoISSUE software is also integrated with GE’s CityIQ intelligent streetlights which are being piloted in the City and can show officers images of vehicles that block fire hydrants, crosswalks or create other safety hazards.

CivicSmart Selected by the City of Columbus, Ohio to Demonstrate Vehicle Detection Sensors

MILWAUKEE, WI  – CivicSmart, Inc., is proud to announce that the City of Columbus, Ohio, has selected CivicSmart as a finalist to install its patented Vehicle Detection Sensors for a three-month trial starting in October 2019.

Following a competitive evaluation, CivicSmart was selected to install 100 of its subterranean Vehicle Detection Sensors in the Short North Arts District along High Street.  CivicSmart is one of three finalists selected to participate in the Columbus trials.

“As the winner of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Smart City Challenge, Columbus is America’s Smart City, and CivicSmart is delighted to be chosen to demonstrate our Smart Parking sensors in the city later this year,” said Mike Nickolaus, CivicSmart President and CEO.

The sensors will be tested and, if successful, will be integrated with the City’s ParkColumbus mobile parking app to allow motorists to identify convenient, vacant spaces before and during their trip to the Short North.  By reducing uncertainty and aimless searching, traffic congestion and vehicle pollution will be reduced, pedestrian safety will be improved, and customers will find it easier to patronize local businesses.

CivicSmart Unveils Next Generation “Smart Parking” Offerings at Gulf Traffic 2018 in Dubai

December 06, 2018

CivicSmart Unveils Next Generation “Smart Parking” Offerings at Gulf Traffic 2018 in Dubai

MILWAUKEE, Wis.(December 5, 2018) –CivicSmart, Inc., an innovator of “Next Generation” Smart Parking technologies is pleased to announce a series of “First of its Kind” offerings at Gulf Traffic 2018, held at the Dubai World Trade Center from December 4-6 (Booth Z1.C70).

CivicSmart’s latest developments demonstrate the power of Smart Parking unconstrained by legacy technology limitations.  These solutions work together to allow municipalities around the world to deliver unprecedented levels of convenience for motorists while generating new revenues, greater efficiencies and comprehensive parking data for municipal parking programs.

Among the groundbreaking, interoperable technologies that CivicSmart is showcasing this week are their:

Automated On-street Reservation System, which the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced in October at the 38th Gitex Technology Week also held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.  This system allows motorists to use the “Smart Parking Reservation” feature in the RTA’s mobile app to locate and reserve on-street spaces at a premium rate and is powered by CivicSmart technology including its highly-accurate vehicle detection sensors and curbside reservation indicators.

Wireless Electronic Permits thathave a unique ID which is read by CivicSmart’s sensors to identify when a specific vehicle parks in an on-street parking space. This allows for seamless permit management by detecting when authorized vehicles enter a regulated space and notifying enforcement officers in real-time when an unpermitted vehicle does so. Electronic permits eliminate most permit fraud and counterfeiting.

Automated On-street Parking Payments (“Park and Walk”).  By linking CivicSmart’s wireless permit to a payment account, when a vehicle with a permit enters a paid parking space, the sensor automatically detects the permit and initiates billing of the motorist’s account without the motorist having to pay at a meter or through a mobile app.  The motorist can simply “Park and Walk” away.  Billing continues until the vehicle departs the space.

Curb Mount Sensor  For municipalities in warm-weather climates that do not want to core drill in the pavement to install a subterranean sensor, CivicSmart’s latest sensor configuration can be attached to the vertical face of the curb. This low profile sensor has a detachable faceplate allowing it to be relocated at minimal cost, and it delivers exceptional accuracy due to the ideal angle for detecting the side of a vehicle.  As “curb management” becomes more important for cities, this is a powerful solution for the management of loading zones, bus zones, fire hydrants, handicapped spaces, and no stopping areas.

Directed Enforcement.  CivicSmart’s map-based enforcement software integrates sensor data with meter payments, mobile payments, automated “Park and Walk” payments, and wireless permits to direct officers in real-time to spaces where vehicles are parked in violation.  Handheld and mobile Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems allow officers to scan plates within a second or two to check enforcement databases and pre-populate citation data for maximum speed and accuracy.

The Old Parker’s Almanac: The Forecast Calls for Cloudy with a Chance of Parking

August 13, 2018

The Old Parker’s Almanac

The Forecast Calls for Cloudy with a Chance of Parking

By Mike Nickolaus

“(It) strives to be useful, but with a pleasant degree of humor.”

  • Robert B. Thomas, Editor and Founder, writing about The Old Farmer’s Almanacin 1829

For 225 years, The Old Farmer’s Almanachas been published without interruption.  It includes information about Astronomy, Gardening, Recipes, Advice and more.  But it is perhaps best known for its Long-Term Weather predictions.

According to the Almanac, the forecasts are derived from a secret formula developed by its Founder in 1792 and still stored today in a black box in Dublin, New Hampshire.

While scientific study has estimated the accuracy of the Almanac’spredicted weather deviations to be ~50% (a coin-flip), this hasn’t harmed the Almanac’senduring charm with 3 million annual print readers and 50 million online viewers.

Even the Almanacitself states that “although neither we nor any other forecasters have as yet gained sufficient insight into the mysteries of the universe to predict the weather with total accuracy, our results are almost always very close to our traditional claim of 80 percent.”

The same can be said about The Old Parker’s Almanac– also known as parking occupancy algorithms – 200 years later. If you read trade magazines, company websites, proposals, marketing materials, or attend parking conferences, you hear more and more vendors touting “algorithms”, “predictive analytics”, “asset-light” detection systems and “lean infrastructure” as a way to inform motorists where they can find a parking space today.

Just like with Mr. Thomas’ Black Box in Dublin, New Hampshire, these “Cloud-based” Black Boxes ingest historical data about highly variable phenomena (payments, citations, sample surveys, traffic counts, special events, weather and more) and attempt to use it to precisely inform you about the future.

But just like the weather on a wedding day in the month of May, 50 or even 80 percent accuracy won’t do you much good.  When a motorist drives downtown searching for a parking space, just like a bride deciding whether to move her wedding indoors, they insist on the latest, real-time information (most likely from their smartphone), not stale data from last week, last month, or last year repackaged as “analytics”.

If these “pseudo-scientific” efforts were simply humorous diversions like The Old Farmer’s Almanac, there would be little harm in the effort.

But just as the failed, high profile sensor projects of a decade ago set the “smart” parking industry back years, today’s “predictive” efforts are doomed to over-promise and under-deliver and run the risk of a similar wave of setbacks.

As any of you who download an app with high expectations only to have it fail to meet them after 3 or 4 uses know, once it fails to deliver you simply ignore or delete it.  That will be the fate of parking guidance apps that don’t display real-time, up-to-the-minute occupancy information.

So why do vendors keep pushing these solutions on their clients?

Because accurate vehicle sensors haven’t been available.  In the absence of what was really needed – a sensor that delivers 99%+ accuracy within a few seconds of a status change – vendors have worked themselves into knots trying to deliver proxies for this data.

It is a function of how valuable this information is, and how hard it has been to collect it, that so many companies have spent so much time and money trying to “guess” where a car is right now rather than simply observe it.

But fortunately that is changing and cities no longer have to rely on so-called educated guesses.   The latest sensors are accurate and flexible enough to be installed in the ground, on a pole, or on the curb; in a metered space or just a time-limited one; and transmit changes in occupancy within a few seconds.  They can be installed in motorcycle separators to manage two-wheelers, in truck stops to detect tractor-trailers, and can read permits with active RFID tags.  They can even be deployed as part of a system to reserve premium on-street parking spaces.

Data from the sensors feed mobile apps, webpages, in-car dashboards, variable message signs, smart meters, enforcement handhelds and dynamic pricing engines to help motorists find spaces right now and to help city staff better manage on-street parking.

Once a city has installed accurate sensors, it can unlock a host of valuable Smart Parking benefits in addition to guidance including providing free time on arrival, supporting graduated meter pricing, implementing special event pricing, zeroing out remaining time, directing enforcement officers, and using comprehensive data to make better policy decisions.

If you’re interested in offering these features in your City, leave The Old Parker’s Almanacon the shelf.

Mike Nickolausis the President & CEO of CivicSmart and a 30-year veteran of the on-street parking industry.  He can be reached at mnickolaus@civicsmart.com.
