Appearing on the list at number 39, ControlScan is ranked among the top 16 percent of managed security service providers (MSSPs) listed.

ControlScan delivers managed security services such as UTM firewall management, as well as a full suite of 24×7 managed detection and response (MDR) solutions that include advanced endpoint security, log event collection and correlation, proactive threat hunting, and more. The company is known for its security-as-a-service (SECaaS) delivery model, which gives the small and mid-sized enterprise (SME) cost-effective access to the same cybersecurity services and technologies as their larger counterparts.

“The managed security service provider market is filled with providers of various size and scale,” said Mark Carl, CEO, ControlScan. “We believe that ControlScan consistently ranks high on the annual Top MSSPs list because of the breadth and depth of services we offer, as well as our strong customer and partner support.”

The Top 250 MSSP rankings are based on MSSP Alert’s 2020 readership survey combined with the digital media site’s global editorial coverage of managed security services providers. The fourth-annual list has expanded from 2019 (200 honorees) and 2018-2017 (100 honorees) amid MSSP Alert’s continued, organic readership growth.

During the September 17 list announcement call with readers and other industry stakeholders, After Nines Inc. executive VP Joe Panettieri said that this year’s survey garnered responses from 753 organizations in 25 countries. In addition, the average revenue among the Top 250 MSSPs is $19.15 million, up 16% from 2019, he said.

ControlScan Partners with CrowdStrike to Deliver Powerful Endpoint Protection to the SMB with MDR Essential

The fully managed solution extends ControlScan Managed Detection and Response services to help smaller businesses access essential endpoint protections

ATLANTA  — ControlScan, a leader in managed security services specializing in compliance, detection and response, today announced general availability of its MDR Essential managed endpoint security service. The new service leverages the ControlScan Cyphon™ and the CrowdStrike Falcon® platforms to deliver fundamentally important endpoint detection, prevention and response capabilities to small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs).

SMBs often struggle with the entry point to a stronger security posture. Many do not have dedicated security personnel, nor do they have the expertise needed to select and implement effective endpoint security.

“MDR Essential is our point of entry solution for businesses needing to get essential security coverage in place, immediately, without breaking the bank,” said Tom Callahan, director of MDR Operations, ControlScan. “Our partnership with CrowdStrike allows us to further extend the industry-leading Falcon endpoint solution with the talents of our in-house security analysts and our 24x7x365 SOC for managed detection and response.”

The CrowdStrike Falcon platform is the only solution to unify key endpoint security capabilities such as next-generation anti-virus (NGAV), endpoint detection and response (EDR), managed threat hunting, IT hygiene and threat intelligence, all delivered through a single, intelligent, lightweight agent. CrowdStrike’s innovative, cloud-native technology allows organizations to quickly and easily deploy the platform at scale to secure workloads across on-premise, virtualized, and cloud-based environments running on a variety of endpoints on or off the network.

“The increasingly complex threat environment has demonstrated that threat actors are not afraid to take aim at organizations of any size. SMBs are particularly susceptible to cyberattacks, given that they often lack the necessary resources to provide the required protection to secure their assets,” said Matthew Polly, vice president of Worldwide Channels and Business Development, CrowdStrike. “We are proud to partner with ControlScan to bring the powerful endpoint detection and response of the CrowdStrike Falcon platform to the MDR Essential solution. Together, we will fortify the defenses of vulnerable SMBs against devastating attacks so that they may continue to focus on the growth and health of their business.”

MDR Essential is also available as a value add for organizations with merchant portfolios, such as managed service providers (MSPs), value added resellers (VARs) and payments technology providers. Through its partner ecosystem, ControlScan delivers managed endpoint security and other threat detection and response services to hundreds of organizations throughout North America.

ControlScan and Cybersecurity Insiders Release New Managed Detection and Response Research Report

Business leaders share their current cybersecurity challenges, as well as drivers for procuring managed security services to effectively address today’s advanced threats

ATLANTA, Sept. 18, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — ControlScan, a leader in managed security services specializing in compliance, detection and response, has collaborated withCybersecurity Insiders to produce an all-new industry research report. The 2019 Managed Detection and Response Report reveals current security program challenges and illustrates why and how organizations outsource for managed detection and response (MDR) as well as advanced endpoint security.

According to the report, more than half (53%) of businesses surveyed are managing their security programs entirely in-house. Of these, 41% said “speed of incident response issues” are a key business challenge. Moreover, this same group of respondents indicated they had not experienced a security incident in the past 12 months (as opposed to 23% for the entire survey sample), and, therefore, were potentially unaware of any past occurrences and/or active security threats.

“For most businesses, staying on top of today’s advanced security threats is a significant undertaking,” said Tom Callahan, director of MDR Operations, ControlScan. “We commissioned this research to better understand how companies are acknowledging and addressing these challenges.”

Altogether, survey respondents selected the following as their top three security operations challenges:

  • Cybersecurity skills shortage in-house (58%);
  • Cost and complexity of building in-house (49%); and
  • Lack of 24×7 security coverage (37%).

“Many businesses are just beginning to learn about managed detection and response services,” said Holger Schulze, CEO and founder of Cybersecurity Insiders. “MDR delivers value to the small and medium enterprise in particular, because internal resource constraints often limit their ability to spot and react to network intruders.”

ControlScan Extends Managed Security Services Capabilities With Dunbar Cybersecurity Acquisition

MSSP cites growing need to proactively address cyber threats

ATLANTA, Oct. 16, 2018  — ControlScan, a leader in managed security and compliance solutions that help secure networks and protect payment card data, announces it has acquired Hunt Valley, Md.-based Dunbar Cybersecurity, including its well-established Security Operations Center (SOC) and powerful SIEM platform, Cyphon. The move brings additional advanced capabilities to the best-in-class managed security servicesControlScan delivers to the mid-level enterprise.

With this strategic acquisition, ControlScan will strengthen the threat detection and response capabilities of its established solution set, helping the businesses it serves better manage an unprecedented number of incoming cyber threats. The company’s decision to expand its capabilities comes from recent research, including the 2017 Threat Monitoring, Detection and Response Report, which found that a majority of organizations do not have the internal manpower and/or expertise to effectively detect and respond to cybersecurity threats.

“Having a strong cybersecurity defense is business critical, but as attackers become increasingly advanced, it’s no longer realistic to assume that defense is 100 percent impenetrable,” Mark Carl, CEO, ControlScan said. “ControlScan has a solid track record of helping businesses defend, and we are now enhancing our means to actively detect and quickly respond to intrusions in real time, as they are happening.”

“Our goal is to provide an effective, mature cybersecurity and threat detection program for the businesses we serve,” said ControlScan COO Schane Simpson, who oversees operations of the company’s Managed Security Services division. “The Dunbar Cybersecurity acquisition bolsters our team of expert security analysts and allows us to leverage the Cyphon platform to proactively identify and mitigate suspicious network activity on our customers’ behalf.”

Tom Callahan, Director of Operations for Dunbar Cybersecurity, will continue with ControlScan as Director of MDR Services. “Dunbar Cybersecurity’s growth has supported ongoing innovation in the way we monitor, detect and respond to our customers’ cybersecurity threats,” Callahan said. “Becoming a primary component of the ControlScan Managed Security Services solution further advances the strong ROI we provide.”

The bulk of Dunbar Cybersecurity’s security analysts will be retained by ControlScan post acquisition. Dunbar Cybersecurity customers can expect a seamless transition to ControlScan Managed Security Services where they, along with current ControlScan customers, will be presented with additional managed security and compliance-related services.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. For more information on ControlScan Managed Security Services, including its new MDR capabilities, please visitControlScan.com/MSS.

Security and compliance firm recognized for its ability to actively detect and mitigate cybersecurity threats

ATLANTA, Sept. 17, 2018  — ControlScan, Inc., a leader in managed security and compliance solutions that help secure networks and protect payment card data, announces that MSSP Alert, published by After Nines Inc., has recognized the company on its 2018 Top 100 MSSPs list. The annual list and associated research identify and honor the top 100 managed security service providers (MSSPs) that specialize in comprehensive, outsourced cybersecurity services.

The Top 100 MSSP rankings are based on MSSP Alert’s 2018 readership survey combined with aggregated third-party research. ControlScan, ranked number 28, actively monitors, manages and mitigates cyber threats through a range of managed security services, including SIEM implementation and management, advanced endpoint security, managed UTM firewall services, internal and external vulnerability scanning, and Managed Detection and Response (MDR).

According to MSSP Alert, demand for MSSP services has escalated amid rising cyberattacks, malware and ransomware incidents worldwide. Other contributing factors include expanding regulatory compliance and data security laws, cybersecurity talent shortages and budget limitations, and the increasing acceptance of cloud-based services.

“A key question these days is ‘Who’s watching your network?’,” said Mark Carl, CEO, ControlScan. “The MSSP Alert Top 100 MSSPs list and supporting research are useful tools for businesses that are seeking the security technologies, dedicated resources and niche expertise ControlScan provides.”

“After Nines Inc. and MSSP Alert congratulate ControlScan on this year’s honor,” said Amy Katz, CEO of After Nines Inc. “As MSPs increasingly introduce managed security services, ControlScan continues to stand out in the fiercely competitive cybersecurity market.”

ControlScan: Many IT Leaders Unprepared for First PCI QSA Assessment

Newly-published white paper provides action steps to save businesses time and money when engaging a Payment Card Industry Qualified Security Assessor (PCI QSA)

ATLANTA, June 25, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — ControlScan, a leader in managed security and compliance solutions that help secure networks and protect payment card data, has published a new educational white paper aimed at helping IT leaders save considerable time and money when engaging a Payment Card Industry Qualified Security Assessor (PCI QSA). “Preparing for Your First PCI QSA Assessment: 7 Steps to Uncomplicated Compliance” addresses the company’s observation that many businesses are not clear on the steps to prepare for a PCI QSA assessment.

“Approximately 40-50% of the companies that contact us to perform their QSA-led assessment haven’t yet laid the necessary groundwork for the assessment to be a success,” said Marc Punzirudu, Director of Security Consulting Services, ControlScan. “Failure to prepare is a recipe for disaster, because it complicates and extends the auditing process well beyond what anyone intended.”

The new ControlScan white paper helps CIOs and CISOs understand the investment of resources required to properly prepare for their first QSA assessment. It covers the common reasons companies fail to achieve PCI compliance, how QSAs approach assessment engagements, and the seven key steps to a PCI compliant QSA assessment.

“It’s a common misconception that the QSA will provide not just the assessment, but also the means for compliance,” said Punzirudu. “Such an arrangement, however, creates a conflict of interest for the QSA company. An auditor can’t be the party charged with assuring compliance.”

Companies with more than 6 million credit card transactions per year are considered PCI DSS Level 1 and are therefore required to undergo an annual PCI QSA assessment. Other companies voluntarily complete the QSA assessment for a variety of reasons, including the ability to leverage the QSA-issued Report on Compliance (ROC) as a competitive differentiator.

“These days it’s commonplace for security and compliance to take center stage in business development conversations,” Punzirudu said. “We’ve worked with several organizations whose prospective customers asked for a current ROC as part of their service-provider agreements.”

The “Preparing for Your First PCI QSA Assessment: 7 Steps to Uncomplicated Compliance” white paper is now available for free download in the ControlScan.com Knowledge Center.
