DESIGNA in the land of “the boot”
New projects brought to life in Italy

In the eleventh book of The Odyssey, Homer called the Italian island of Sicily “The Island of the Sun”: in June, DESIGNA installed new parking management systems in the Sicilian cities of Catania and Noto.

The first SLIMPARK system in Sicily was recently inaugurated in Noto, whose old town is a UNESCO world heritage site, in collaboration with Italian partner ParkService.

Five ABACUS systems have initially been installed in the capital Catania as part of the Smart City project, which allows visitors to park in designated parking spaces and take the bus into the city free of charge. Two more will follow.

About DESIGNA:

In 1951 DESIGNA became Germany’s first producer and supplier of parking meters. DESIGNA’s history of innovation continued. At the end of the seventies, the Kiel-based enterprise was able to to introduce its first fully automatic parking system. The company’s programme has now been further developed to encompass fully comprehensive solutions, from the design and planning phase right through to the installation and service of fully automatic parking systems. The experience DESIGNA has acquired over the last 50 years continues to benefit customers at every stage of the project.

New Parking System at Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport

DESIGNA implements solution in Little Rock

Little Rock/Kiel, 07-21-2016: Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport in Little Rock, Arkansas is now benefiting from a state-of-the-art Parking Access and Revenue Control System (PARCS) from DESIGNA, installed as part of a redevelopment project of airport facilities. The DESIGNA solution was delivered by the airport’s incumbent PARCS systems integrator and maintenance provider, Next Gen Parking.

As one of the world leading manufacturers of car park management sys-tems, DESIGNA has over 15,000 systems installed globally in a wide variety of parking situations including recent installations at Sydney and Frankfurt airports.

The new DESIGNA PARCS at Clinton National Airport is currently going through its final system acceptance. It cleverly integrates e.g. automated entry lanes, dual-use exit lanes, license plate recognition (LPR)and com-mend VoIP intercom. TransCore Automatic Vehicle Identification and a HID Proximity Card Access complete the high technology solution.

“The DESIGNA system was preferred due to the robust system architecture, stability of the platform, the flexibility to integrate and interface with any third party service provider plus the number of cli-ent references at major airports across the globe,” said Jim Bass, landside operations manager for Clinton National Airport. “Moreover, DESIGNA has been an excellent partner in the process, and we`re pleased to be working with the company.”

Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport is Arkansas’s largest commercial service airport, with nearly 2million passengers annually. The Little Rock airport hosts six airlines with dozen of daily departures and nonstop service to 15 cities.

DESIGNA`s advanced parking systems improves efficiency at Surrey (UK) shopping centre

DESIGNA`s advanced parking systems improves efficiency at Surrey (UK) shopping centre

Sunbury-on-Thames (UK) / Kiel, 2017-07-18: One of the world-leading Pay on Foot parking systems manufacturer, DESIGNA, has worked with The Belfry shopping centre in Redhill, Surrey, to update its car parking system to the company’s advanced ABACUS software and equipment.

The installation, comprising four new state-of-the-art entrance and exit barriers, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and EasyAccess paystations, helps to improve the efficiency and security of the car park, which is popular with local shoppers due to its central location.

Being the first point of the shopping experience, the easiness and availability of a car park is crucial to the overall service and satisfaction of a customer. DESIGNA recognised this importance and developed ABACUS, an advanced car park access system that intelligently integrates various elements to create the ultimate system that is highly reliable and low-maintenance with impressive capabilities. It is also able to cope with large volumes of traffic while providing the highest level of monitoring to ensure a secure parking environment.

The Belfry is the shopping hub of Redhill and provides residents and visitors with an extensive choice of high street stores. The centre receives a high number of visitors each day, with the majority of visitors to the town using the car park for the day. The management found that its existing basic car parking equipment was unable to match the performance and reliability required for this constant flow of traffic.

Andy Nash, Shopping Centre Manager at The Belfry commented, “As the shopping centre was getting busier and busier we recognised the need for an access system with better reliability and service, and that could benefit the centre in the future. We released a tender for equipment that offered advanced technology and could help us to improve the service for our customers and we found that DESIGNA’s ABACUS did just this.

With the new system we are now offering customers a better payment system, as well as potential frequent visitor schemes in the future.”

He continued, “The full installation was very efficient and did not disturb or impede our customers in any way and we were able to remain open as usual with parking available. DESIGNA UK have been very helpful and good to work with throughout the process and have been very quick and efficient in responding to any queries that we have had. The new installation has truly allowed us to enhance the experience for our customers and we are very pleased with the system itself and the many benefits it has brought to the shopping centre.”

The management’s decision to install the ABACUS system was supported by a demonstration of the software and equipment at one of DESIGNA’s flagship installations at the Dundrum shopping centre in Dublin and on the company’s stand at the Parkex exhibition.

The 780-space car park previously used a standard pay-on-foot barrier system. Now with the new DESIGNA system with its advanced ANPR, the shopping centre management can easily track the amount of time each car has stayed in the car park especially if someone loses a ticket.

By installing the ANPR cameras, The Belfry can also monitor the patterns of each customer’s visits and issue rewards to frequent customers. The system has also allowed the centre to set up a VIP Parkers scheme and make the current season ticket parking permits easier to use.

The car park’s entrance and exit are both installed with two DESIGNA In+ and Out+ ticket terminals respectively in the two lanes for a quicker flow of traffic for customers. The advanced terminals operate on the lowest energy consumption of their class with the ability to hold more tickets than before, with the bin adapting itself to the fill quantity. Customers are greeted with excellent user-friendliness due to the simplicity of the equipment and illuminated display with clear instructions.

Both the entrance and exit lanes are supported by DESIGNA’s robust barriers for added security, opened only either via the ANPR or ticket system.

For payment, six of DESIGNA’s new EasyAccess paystations are placed over two levels of the car park. This allows customers to pay for their visit before returning to their car and exit the car park more quickly. The EasyAccess paystation is deliberately designed to allow disabled customers to pay freely without assistance.

Each of the paystations is installed with an interactive monitor that makes it easy to pay and offers several different languages.

The shopping centre management have full access and control of the ABACAS system through the server, with a manual pay station (MPS) to allow them to create or override payments. The control room also links with each of the ticket and payment terminals via an Intercom Commend GE300 to attend to customer assistance when required.

Recognised worldwide for its high quality and intelligent systems, DESIGNA has over 15,000 systems installed globally across a wide range of car park situations, including shopping centres, airports and hospitals to name a few. ABACUS is one of the company’s innovations that demonstrates the endless possibilities available to car park operators. The future-proof technology allows for expansions of premises or new property acquisitions by allowing additional systems to be added to the network. In its many global applications, ABACUS has proved an effortless system for both operators and users and is a great investment for companies looking to the future.

Further information on automatic car parking systems is available from DESIGNA UK on 01932 784040, by emailing sales@designauk.com, or by visiting the company’s website at www.designauk.com

US Partners Visit Kiel and the DESIGNA Partner Workshop in Amsterdam

Four of Designa’s US Partners recently visited the DESIGNA headquarters in Kiel, Germany, to gain an overview of production activities and work processes at DESIGNA Verkehrsleittechnik GmbH.  Stefan Koch, DESIGNA CSO, informed them about the latest developments, innovation and trends in the industry, before accompanying them to the 7th DESIGNA Partner Workshop, held April 2nd through 4th in Amsterdam.

Tim Breuning, president of Light & Breuning Inc., a Designa U.S. Business Partner headquartered in Indiana, was one of the attending Partners.  “The Designa Partner Conference in Amsterdam was an excellent opportunity to affirm our confidence in the technological leadership evident in the product line,” explained Breuning. “We shared our knowledge with system integrators from six continents evidencing global resources going forward.”

This event, which directly preceded the Intertraffic trade show, was attended by more than 50 delegates from 20 different countries. The highlights of the workshop comprised DESIGNA’s new ABACUS- X18 feature and the “qinkk” parking app, as well as many other new products from the world of parking. There were also several accompanying activities, such as enjoying a tour of the Sünner brewery in Cologne, and a special Sunday dinner with DESIGNA on board a traditional Amsterdam houseboat.

Stefan Koch summed up his thoughts on the event.  “Many thanks to our partners. Only with their support and work can DESIGNA consolidate its market position and continue to grow successfully during 2016.”

DESIGNA’s 65th birthday – From Kiel to the world

Kiel, 03/15/2016: Reliable, innovative, and with considerable know-how: that is the recipe for success with which DESIGNA Verkehrsleittechnik has established itself as a technological leader in the parking management industry. The internationally operating company is now celebrating its 65th birthday.

From Germany to Australia, from France to Italy and England, and also to the USA, DESIGNA parking systems control car parks on all five continents. More than 15,000 systems have already been successfully installed – and two more are being installed every day. Our customers include airports, shopping malls and also hotels, hospitals and local authorities.

It all started on a small scale: With just three employees, Heinz Bula and Gerhard Vogel founded “DESIGNA-Deutsche Signal- und Werbemittelgesellschaft mbH” in Kiel on 11th January 1951. Originally, the company manufactured traffic signs and advertising signs until the first fully automated parking system was presented about 40 years ago.

And today? Due to the ever-increasing speed of advancements, DESIGNA has been able to bring solutions with increasing complexity and intelligence onto the market. Current example: the Cloud service and beacon-based parking app “qinkk”. The number of DESIGNA employees has now also increased to about 350 in more than 60 countries. Some of them have been with the company for over 40 years, and many have remained loyal to the company for more than 20 years.

It remains to be asked “what next”? DESIGNA intends to continue growing for decades to come. The parking business is changing, and new opportunities are emerging. As a trendsetter for new products and services, the company puts its customers in a position to exploit new business areas and valuable marketing benefits.
