Genetec: South Grand District in St. Louis, MO, Increases Parking Lot Safety with Cloud Surveillance

South Grand Community Improvement District uses Genetec Stratocast to reduce license plate theft and share information with police department

MONTRÉAL, January 30th 2019—Genetec Inc. (“Genetec”), a leading technology provider of unified security, public safety, operations, and business intelligence solutions today announced that the South Grand Community Improvement District (CID) in St. Louis, Missouri is using the Genetec Stratocast™ cloud-based video monitoring system to deter license plate theft in its parking lot and provide video access to the local police department to help reinforce security.

One of the services offered by the South Grand CID is free parking. At any time of the day, drivers can park in a central parking lot to visit businesses or residents. While this lot has always been convenient and safe, license plate theft was troubling nearby areas. To deter license plate theft in their own community, the South Grand CID board decided to add video surveillance to the lot. Currently, three cameras monitor the entire 90-space parking lot. Video recordings are sent over a wireless network which connects to the South Grand CID main office, just a few blocks away from the lot.

With this cloud-based video monitoring system, Rachel Witt, Executive Director at South Grand CID, can quickly and easily view video from anywhere, at any time. “Using the cloud video system, I am able to find and view the video in seconds. I can narrow down my search based on dates and time and watch the event unfold with all camera feeds up on the monitor. It’s really that simple,” commented Witt.

Only two weeks after installing the Stratocast video monitoring system, a visitor reported that their license plates had been stolen. “The visitor provided a description of the car, and a timeframe in which the incident likely happened. Using the Stratocast system, I was able to find and view the video in seconds. I could clearly see the suspect enter the lot, remove the plates and leave in his own car. Since the police are very busy here, I was able to bookmark the video recording and then notify them that the video was ready,” said Witt.

Stratocast has made it easy for the South Grand CID to give video access to local police so that when a crime is reported in the district, officers can immediately begin to conduct investigations without leaving their desks.

While the South Grand CID manages and owns the Stratocast solution, officers can log into the system and view video recordings when required. This is enabled by the Genetec Federation™ feature, which gives an organization access to manage multiple independent Genetec systems as one. A memorandum of understanding was signed so each parties’ responsibilities are clear.

“Instead of driving over and picking up a DVD, officers can directly access video from our cameras to see what happened. Not only does it help speed up investigations, it saves officers’ valuable time,” continued Witt.

The installation of Stratocast is not only helping to reduce license plate theft but it is also helping residents and visitors feel safer than ever. “Business owners, residents, and visitors have a better sense of safety when they know cameras are up. But they also need to know that we’re equipped to respond quickly to any disturbance. And that’s what Stratocast helps us achieve. With the addition of Stratocast, we’re able to show everyone that we have strengthened the security in our community,” concluded Witt.”

Genetec Announces New Plate Link Feature for AutoVu— Allows Sharing of Parking Data Between Patrol Vehicles

Genetec Announces New Plate Link Feature for AutoVu— Allows Sharing of Parking Data Between Patrol Vehicles

Vehicle to vehicle communication simplifies patrol planning and increases enforcement efficiency

MONTRÉAL, June 1, 2018—Genetec Inc. (“Genetec”), a leading technology provider of parking enforcement, unified security, public safety, operations, and business intelligence solutions, today announced Plate Link, a new feature for its AutoVu™ automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) solution. Designed to allow vehicles to share license plate data while out on patrol, Plate Link acts as a force multiplier for parking enforcement officers (PEOs), allowing them to administer shared permits and time-limited parking bylaws across multiple zones more efficiently.

Managing shared parking permits (where several vehicles share a single permit) can be a complex and time-consuming task. To identify a shared permit violation, a single parking enforcement vehicle would typically need to see both cars sharing a permit to detect that they were both in the lot at the same time. This can prove challenging, if not impossible, for large facilities that employ multiple enforcement vehicles. With AutoVu Plate Link, any patrol vehicle can detect violations using license plate data collected by other connected vehicles. This helps increase the rate of detection and simplifies the assignment of patrol routes.

“In an effort to provide the best experience possible to their patrons, parking organizations have adapted their services to provide more flexibility. Shared permits have become a frequent and popular solution to encourage carpooling and accommodate households with multiple vehicles. This has placed a heavier burden on enforcement officers who must ensure compliance with parking rules,” said Charles Pitman, AutoVu Product Marketing Manager at Genetec. “Our goal is to empower officers by making it easier for them to organize their routes and efficiently enforce those rules, without having to worry about the way their ALPR system works,” he added.

AutoVu Plate Link provides similar benefits to officers enforcing time-limited parking bylaws. It allows two separate patrol vehicles to be assigned to a zone and work in unison, as if they were a single vehicle. Each license plate scanned by a vehicle is automatically transferred to the next vehicle that enters the zone. By working together, the first patrol vehicle captures the license plate information initially, and should a violation occur, it will be detected by the second patrol vehicle making a subsequent pass. The first patrol vehicle doesn’t have to circle back after the time-limit has elapsed. Using the same vehicle data eliminates the need to circle back to an assigned zone, and boosts capture rates.

Available immediately from any AutoVu Mobile certified dealer, AutoVu Plate Link is included withinAutoVu Managed Services and available as a license for customers with Security Center AutoVu on premises.

Genetec Announces Traffic Sense—A Unified Traffic Operations Platform Driven by Advanced Analytics

New solution lets traffic officials automate processes and take control of traffic by combining ITS, video surveillance, and incident response technologies

MONTRÉAL, October 26th 2017—In a move that offers a modern approach to traffic operations, Genetec Inc. (“Genetec”), a leading technology provider of unified security, public safety, operations, and business intelligence solutions, today announced the launch of a next-generation software platform called Genetec Traffic Sense™. Designed to deliver greater oversight and efficiency for traffic operations, Traffic Sense brings a unified view of traffic systems, taps into emerging technologies such as video and data analytics, and introduces a higher level of automation to speed up resolution of road incidents. Genetec will unveil Traffic Sense to the public for the first time at the ITS World Congress in Montréal, October 29 to November 2, Booth #2404.

Traditional advanced traffic management systems require extensive custom integration and development, and are slow to adapt to changing environments. Traffic Sense, on the other hand, is designed to seamlessly integrate new and emerging technologies, reducing customers’ total cost of ownership and shortening implementation cycles significantly. Traffic Sense enables traffic centers to adapt and automate responses to current challenges, such as roadworks, new developments and changes in driver behaviors.

Traffic Sense delivers a consolidated, unified view of real-time conditions and vehicle flow to traffic operation centers, border crossing agencies, and transportation departments so they can monitor traffic conditions in real-time and with more detail. From real-time notification of road incidents, to presenting all relevant information in a single interface, and guiding responses through automated workflows, Traffic Sense empowers traffic operations staff to get roads quickly back to normal.

By tapping into a variety of data sources from roadside sensors to 3rd party probe data for travel-time analytics, Traffic Sense automatically identifies congestion as it builds up. It correlates traffic data with associated video feeds, all displayed within dynamic maps of roadways, giving operators instant and complete awareness of what is happening. Armed with this information, operators can take action through Traffic Sense to bring things back to normal. They are guided in their response through dynamic standard operating procedures, and can update signs along affected roadways right from Traffic Sense, ensuring drivers are well informed at all times.

“The road transportation industry is experiencing a period of rapid transformation. New and emerging technologies are needed to help traffic operation centers understand and deal with the increased complexity of our roads and always-changing traffic conditions,” said Christian Chénard-Lemire, Commercial and Delivery Lead—Traffic Sense at Genetec. “With Traffic Sense, we offer cities and states the ability to better understand and visualize what is happening on their roads and equip them with the control they need to resolve incidents in the moment,” added Chénard-Lemire.

Traffic Sense also allows organizations to define the resolution procedures that guide their teams in responding to a road situation. Administrators create automated workflows that are triggered based on a situation in progress, which in turn present the appropriate response procedure to operators. They no longer have to guess, and they have everything they need right in front of them. This approach is ultimately more efficient, less error-prone, and ensures operators respond consistently and with less stress.

Integration with Google Maps and Axis Citilog

Designed to be connected to a number of third party traffic applications, Traffic Sense is the first traffic operations software in the Canadian market to integrate data directly from Google Maps. Traffic Sense is able to use Google Maps data, alongside data from Bluetooth sensors and Automated License Plate Recognition systems (ALPR), to calculate absolute and relative travel times. Traffic Sense can then trigger actions and automate tasks, such as alerting operators to unusual congestion and displaying slowdown warnings on digital message signs to redirect drivers.

The new software also integrates with the automatic incident detection system from Citilog, an Axis Communications company. This system identifies incidents and accidents within seconds on streets, highways, bridges and tunnels. When a new incident occurs, such as a car on fire or illegally parked vehicle, Citilog will automatically trigger an alarm within Traffic Sense, bring up nearby relevant video feeds, and prompt the operator to call the emergency services and bring up relevant information to be relayed, such as GPS coordinates.

Traffic Sense is available now from the extensive network of Genetec certified systems integrators. To learn more about Genetec Traffic Sense, visit: www.genetec.com/trafficsense.

Genetec Announces AutoVu Motoscan—Ultra-Efficient Scooter-Mounted On-Street Parking Enforcement Solution

Company to Unveil Motoscan at the Parkopolis Expo and Conference in Paris, June 21 & 22 2017

MONTREAL, June 15th 2017—Genetec Inc. (“Genetec”), a leading provider of open architecture security and public safety solutions will unveil Genetec AutoVu™ Motoscan, a new scooter-mounted on-street parking enforcement solution at this year’s Parkopolis (on the Copperpark booth # E11 9 pavilion 5.1 and the Indigo Park booth # C13 pavilion 5.1).

Designed to help increase parking enforcement efficiency in the traditionally narrow streets of European cities, Motoscan is a lightweight, low-power, yet fully-featured license plate recognition unit that is designed to be easily mounted on a smaller vehicle such as a scooter or small motorbike. Equipped with specialized ANPR cameras mounted on the scooter, the AutoVu Motoscan system automatically scans license plates and sends back the information to the parking authorities’ back-end system which will identify parking violations and issue tickets, as required.

“Managing parking in a city is not an easy task, but it’s particularly challenging for many European cities with narrow, busy streets. We have designed Motoscan to bring all the features of our state of the art AutoVu ANPR (Automated Number Plate Recognition) system, in a small, compact unit that can be easily mounted on a scooter or small motorbike, without compromising the balance and stability of the vehicle,” said Chris Yigit, Product Line Manager, Genetec Inc.

The Motoscan unit is compact, measuring just 50Wx39Dx30H cm (19.7×15.2×12 in). It combines all critical components onto a single device to keep the weight low.

“At less than 15 kg, the Motoscan consumes less power than a 40-watt light bulb, allowing it to be powered on appropriate scooters without additional batteries, and function for as long as there is a fuel in the tank,” added Yigit.

The main unit is designed to meet the demanding automotive environment, making it able to withstand a broad range of harsh vibrations, weather and road conditions, including cobblestones, bumpy streets and smooth pavement.

In spite of its small form factor, Motoscan packs plenty of state-of the-art mobile ANPR features: this single, powerful ANPR solution automatically captures and reads thousands of license plates per shift. Thanks to the AutoVu SharpX ANPR high-resolution cameras included with the unit, Motoscan will offer consistent performance day and night and in all weather conditions. It can accurately decipher plate numbers on vehicles parked in parallel, at 45° or 90°, and can even read dirty or obstructed plates. The unit is also equipped with ruggedized built-in wireless technology to ensure real time communication with third-party parking management companies.

In order to avoid distracting the driver, Motoscan features an active manual controller instead of a screen. Located on the steering bar, the controller features toggle switches and LED lights to inform the driver of the functioning state of system. The data collected by the ANPR camera is automatically sent to a central location, and there is no need for the driver to interact with the controls, making it simpler and safer to operate.

Backed by 20 years of technological innovation, Genetec AutoVu provides an accurate, reliable and easy-to-use ANPR solution for municipal parking enforcement. Already successfully piloted in a major city in Belgium, AutoVu Motoscan is expected to be available in Q3 2017 from certified Genetec AutoVu resellers in Europe. Genetec will unveil and demonstrate the AutoVu SharpV at the IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police) conference in San Diego, CA, October 15th -18th 2016, Booth #3517. The AutoVu SharpV camera is expected to be available in early December 2016 from Genetec channel partners and resellers.

AutoVu SharpV is designed for fixed ALPR installations. It can be tied into citywide video surveillance systems to improve forensic investigations, reporting, monitoring, and is ideally suited for controlling access to corporate facilities, as well as managing off-street parking facilities. The SharpV-ITS model will offer a solution specifically targeted at the intelligent transportation sector.

Featuring a completely new design that makes it easy for integrators to install, the AutoVu SharpV can be easily mounted on walls or poles. With power and communication transferring through a Power-over- Ethernet plus (PoE+) connection, and a varifocal lens design that allows installers to easily adjust the focal distance of the camera on site for optimal image capture, the new SharpV simplifies system specification and provides flexibility during deployment.

With high-definition ALPR and context cameras and onboard processing in a single device, the SharpV can detect and read any type of license plate on the edge, and includes various analytics such as vehicle make and direction of travel.

“The new AutoVu SharpV is the result of over 15 years of specialized ALPR design experience, so it’s much more than an upgrade. It features premium performance without any of the challenges that often accompany ALPR projects. Not only does it include all the features of our previous generation Sharp ALPR cameras, but it also brings a whole new level of image precision, combined with ease of installation at a lower price point. With our new SharpV, ALPR has never been easier,” said Chris Yigit, Program Manager for AutoVu.

The SharpV can also be integrated with Omnicast™, the IP video surveillance system of Security Center, the Genetec unified security platform. The SharpV can simultaneously stream live video to Omnicast, doubling as video surveillance unit and recorded video can be associated with ALPR hits to enhance awareness and investigations. SharpV also supports the AutoVu Free Flow parking enforcement module to increase parking enforcement efficiency by providing a real-time inventory of vehicles parked illegally in monitored parking lots.
