Nedap secures vehicle access to Amwaj Islands

Amwaj Islands in the Kingdom of Bahrain required a vehicle access control solution to enter the luxury community and residential areas. As a first solution, tenants were given remote controllers to control the barriers, but this solution was proved to be inefficient. Nedap’s business partner Secure Services Ltd. WWL implemented a complete access control solution, including TRANSIT to secure vehicle access to this exclusive community.

Luxury on the water

The Amwaj Islands is a group of 6 man-made islands located in the Persian Gulf to the northeast of Bahrain, near the coast of Muharraq Island. The islands contain residential, commercial, hotel and retail buildings, as well as a 240m diameter circular marina with over 140 berths. Other facilities like an international school, university, hospital, fuel station, theme parks and a lagoon side are situated on the various islands as well.

Replacement for remote controllers

Users of the luxury community needed a system for secure vehicle access. An important requirement was to solve the inconvenience of the use of IR remote controllers that sometimes did not work properly or ran out of battery; the solution had to be convenient for the drivers of the vehicles. Long-range readers and semi-active vehicle identification tags were the perfect match. The readers are connected to an access control system which makes the process of rolling out identifiers much easier in addition to enhanced security.

Automatic vehicle identification

Nedap’s long-range vehicle identification system TRANSIT was installed to provide secure access without forcing tenants to stop their vehicle. The TRANSIT Ultimate is a high-end reader that identifies vehicles up to 10 meters (33 ft.). The vehicles of all residents and contracting workers are equipped with the Window Button. This vehicle identification tag is identified as soon as it enters the reading zone of the TRANSIT Ultimate reader. It allows authorized vehicles to enter the community, without the need to stop at the gate.

Automatic vehicle identification ensures a smooth flow of authorized people only and increases the safety of both tenants and contracting workers.

Professional security solutions

This Nedap solution for long-range vehicle identification was integrated with gate barriers of FAAC and Magnetic. The access control  system of Secure Services Limited WLL. was chosen, the company that provides professional security solutions for local authorities, industrial and commercial clients.

“The system is working according to expectations and the end-user is satisfied and plans on continuous expansion”, Kevin Balkhuysen, Head of Technical Division, Secure Services Limited.

Being the most innovative medical center in the region, SMC wanted to offer first class services, also when it comes to security. Before Nedap’s hands-free door access solution was installed, there was no control over which patients, patient caregivers and visitors entered/left the hospital facility or when.

One of the main threats for a safe hospital environment are those for viruses. In order to be well protected to these threats, movement of all people in the building must be tracked at all times. An important requirement for the tracking solution was that gaining access must never cause hindering.

Hands-free door access

Nedap’s uPASS Access readers were chosen to identify all patients, patient caregivers and visitors access using a wristband. The uPASS Access is a groundbreaking UHF RFID reader for hands-free building and door access. It reads access credentials at a distance of up to 2 meter (6 ft.) and is the perfect solution for situations that require both security and convenience.

The uPASS Access readers are mounted near doors, elevators and at strategic points. They were integrated into a third party access control system to determine who gets access when and where. The implementation was realized by Nedap’s preferred partner in the healthcare industry in South Korea: TechSphere.

People tracking

Thanks to this implemented solution, patients, patient caregivers and visitors access can be monitored according to hospital policy. In case a contagious disease arises, all procedures can be followed immediately, because the history of all (suspect) people and where they had access can be viewed in real-time. This solution makes sure the hospital meets the highest healthcare standards.

Comarch and Nedap improve parking in Warsaw

The city of Warsaw selected the Polish IT company Comarch to optimize parking in the streets of Warsaw. In this project in the capital city of Poland, Nedap partners up with Comarch for the occupancy detection of individual parking spaces, using the SENSIT bay-mounted sensor system. Almost 200 parking spaces at the Plac Konstytucji and in front of the Central Railway Station of Warsaw are monitored by smart parking technologies. Real-time parking information is available in the Comarch Smart City Parking software application. The project has been commissioned by Zarząd Dróg Miejskich (Municipal Road Authority).

Warsaw Capital City

With an estimated population of Warsaw metropolitan area 2.6 million people, Warsaw is the largest city in Poland. Besides that Warsaw is also one of the most-populous capital cities in the European Union which is developing and transforming rapidly into a modern city. Many skyscrapers are dominating the new city skyline, hosting public organizations as well as domestic and international private companies. Facing high levels of traffic congestion, the Warsaw city authorities are ambitious and investing on major ITS infrastructural changes, such as for public transportation, road infrastructure and on and off street parking.

Comarch Smart City Platform

To improve parking in the streets of Warsaw, the Polish company Comarch was selected by the city of Warsaw to introduce a smart parking platform. The technology behind this smart parking solution is based on Comarch’s Smart Parking system and a mobile application for inhabitants and visitors. This enables the system to collect information on the occupancy and vacancy of parking spots and to inform drivers in real time about the number of available parking spaces including navigation to the suggested available parking spot.

Besides that, Comarch offers a management and analytical platform on the parking infrastructure. This enables the municipal roads authority to obtain analytical data in the form of reports and summaries of key indicators and statistics on utilization of parking spaces. This will help the city authorities to make decisions concerning the city’s future parking policy.

Parking Sensor Technology

As a part of this project, Nedap’s smart parking sensor system SENSIT were implemented to cover the parking spaces at the Plac Konstytucji.

Located in the historical heart of the city, the Plac Konstytucji  is the major square in the Śródmieście district of Warsaw. Constructed on the Marszałkowska street, the Constitution Square is one of the busiest places in Warsaw city center. Vehicular traffic, pedestrians and public transportation services like buses, trams and metro lines are crossing each other. This Constitution Square contains a number of 110  off-street parking spaces that are situated outdoors. In this same project implementation Comarch monitored over 80 parking spaces in front of main railway station in the city center of Warsaw with their overhead camera-based sensor technology.

“In urban agglomerations looking for parking spaces is very time-consuming, especially in the city centre and business districts. The Parking Information System developed by Comarch is set to solve the problem,” says Wojciech Dec, Comarch Smart City Product Manager. “The comfort of being able to find a parking space faster is important to all drivers but it also matters to residents. The shorter the time taken to find a parking space the lower the emission of fumes. The traffic flow is also better as the risk of congestion and collisions is lowered,” adds Dec.

Accurate Vehicle Detection

At the Plac Konstytucji, Nedap’s SENSIT system presents the robustness and reliability of its double sensor technology and radio communication network. Nedap is the developer and manufacturer of SENSIT. This vehicle detection system consists of wireless bay-mounted sensors that detect in real-time whether or not a single parking bay is occupied and how long it has been occupied.

“It’s great to see the results of the parking solution in Warsaw. Using the dual-detection sensor technology, magnetic and infrared, combined with the intelligent software application, the SENSIT system ensures accurate vehicle detection measuring. From that software the parking data is real-time integrated into the Smart City Parking platform of Comarch”, explains Ido Wentink, Business Development Manager at Nedap.

The testing phase of the project has been launched in August 2016 and were continued until the end of the year.

Nedap: Shop & Go concept embraced by city of Waregem

April 04, 2017

Nedap: Shop & Go concept embraced by city of Waregem

The Belgian city of Waregem recently introduced the Shop & Go parking concept. This concept, based on Nedap’s SENSIT, enables people to park their car for 30 minutes for free. The real-time parking data that becomes available with this solution is of importance for the cities’ efficient enforcement.

Following successful implementations in other Belgian cities, like Kortrijk and Ostend, the city of Waregem embraced the Shop & Go concept. The innovative municipality of Waregem has created areas where people can park their car 30 minutes for free. In these areas, Nedap’s smart parking sensors are installed in individual parking bays. These SENSIT sensors detect when there is a vehicle parked. When the maximum parking time is exceeded, the sensor sends a notification to the handheld of a nearby parking attendant. This allows the parking attendant to enforce very efficiently. The software that makes this possible is based on Tradelec’s InTouch.

In the past, when drivers wanted to park their vehicle, they had to get a parking ticket and place it behind the window. Thanks to Nedap’s SENSIT system, they no longer have to search for a parking space or get a ticket to park.

The benefits of wireless parking sensors

The project was implemented by Parking Project Solutions (PPS). “PPS was pleased to deliver an efficient car park occupancy system that covering the customer’s needs. The easy installation without any wiring of SENSIT is a big benefit to obtain a flexible & adaptable system with a fast deployment. The real-time information about the available parking spaces improves the service and satisfaction. Unnecessary driving into the parking and the search for an available parking spot belong to the past,” says Erik Demets of PPS.

Carefree parking

“Shop & Go” is a smart parking solution favoring rapid rotation of vehicles towards stimulating local commerce. This solution allows people to park carefree for 30 minutes. It offers people an easy parking solution, as they do not need to get tickets anymore. In addition, cities can create highly  targeted findings with the real-time parking data that becomes available with this solution.

Parking guidance

Tradelec’s InTouch is a mobile application that guides drivers to empty parking spaces. This app is based on the real-time parking information that becomes available with SENSIT.

“Backed by the professionalism of true experts in their respective domains (deployment, management and enforcement), SENSIT was able to live up to the expectations of flexibility and ease-of-use as requested by the city of Waregem,” says Wouter Vansteenkiste, Business Development Manager at Nedap.

Efficient parking enforcement in Adelaide with Nedap’s parking sensors

Efficient parking enforcement in Adelaide with Nedap’s parking sensors

Recently Nedap’s SENSIT solution was installed in Hindmarsh, Adelaide. By integrating the parking sensors in combination with the camera-based parking enforcement solution of eSMART 21, more efficient parking enforcement is realized in this part of the city. The solution makes a great difference for local traders, who can now find a parking spot easily.

Hindmarsh is an inner suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the City of Charles Sturt. In this suburb, a carpark experienced a lot of nuisance because of the many parking violations. Recently the city has been receiving complaints from traders for not having sufficient car parks on Port Road due to overstaying by the tram commuters at the one hour time-limit areas. As the carpark was fully occupied all the time, the traders experienced a lot of frustration finding an available parking space near their destination.

Five-month trial

To prevent vehicles from staying over the maximum parking duration limit, eSMART 21’s system was installed for a five-month trial. It uses cameras to capture registration plates and Nedap’s SENSIT to detect the parking duration of each vehicle. During the trial, the number of detected parking violations increased from 16 to 285 with the use of smart parking sensors.

“SMART ePark really helped out the local traders,” says Mayor Kirsten Alexander.

Efficient enforcement

Any vehicle staying over the maximum parking duration limit, will be registered. A ticket is then sent out in the mail. Former mayor of Charles Sturt Council, Kirsten Alexander said motorists were given a grace period.

Instead of the former manual system of parking officers patrolling for over stayers, SMART ePark utilises the Nedap SENSIT wireless parking sensors, cameras and purpose-built software in order to monitor parking spaces. The solution ensures drivers are not leaving their vehicles unoccupied for longer than their allotted time. The system now ensures turnaround of parking spaces in this area and minimized drivers that park their vehicles the entire day.

Higher parking profits

Within seven weeks of the system trial, parking turnover had increased by 34% in the monitored spaces. Within five months, the system has caught over 412 overstayers and City of Charles Sturt has issued 285 fines after allowing a grace period of 15 minutes. “I think it makes a difference because people know they cannot get away with over staying the time limit,” says Luke Charnstrom, Lady Daly Duty Manager.

“After testing multiple sensor technologies, we soon discovered that the Nedap sensors are characterized by very high accuracy, which is key to our enforcement application as fines should only be issued based on accurate data of parking occupancy detection. In addition, the data can also provide consumers with information on where there are available spaces,” states Jega Balakrishnan, CEO of eSMART 21.

The trial proved to be very successful for the council. They are now looking at extending the system for the other parking spaces.

Nottingham Park Estate Converts to Nedap’s ANPR

March 28, 2017

Nottingham Park Estate Converts to Nedap’s ANPR

The private housing estate Nottingham Park Estate Ltd required a reliable solution for secure vehicle access. The key demand of the end customer was that no RFID tags would be used. Nedap’s ANPR Access HD linked to Nortech’s Norpass3 access control system was chosen because of its security and flexibility.

Nottingham Park Estate Limited (NPEL) was formed in 1985 essentially to maintain and improve the estate for its members and residents. It is a private residential housing estate to the west of Nottingham which is noted for its Victorian architecture and gas street lighting.

Secure, flexible solution

A reliable vehicle identification system was needed to replace the ageing RFID tagging system used to control vehicle access in and out of the estate.

The Cheshire based company, Sitewatch Fire & Surveillance Ltd, a leading security systems consultant, installer and operator was commissioned to identify a suitable upgrade solution. They chose an ANPR based Access Control solution from Nortech. This provides a secure and flexible means of managing access in and out of the estate for all residents, park staff and authorised visitors.

Supported by Nortech, Sitewatch installed Nedap’s ANPR Access HD cameras at each access point to the estate, replacing the old vehicle tag readers. The cameras are linked to the Norpass3 Access Control system and the number plate of each authorised vehicle is registered within the Norpass3 system.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition

Nedap’s ANPR Access HD is an all in one camera including High Definition camera, analyzer and high power IR illuminator. It covers nearly all European countries and has a broad list of world-wide countries supporting a large range of IR-reflective license plates. The usage of a HD sensor in combination with the high power IR, enables reading more complex number plates in more challenging circumstances and from a wider range.

The ANPR camera can automatically read the number plate at up to 10 metres as a vehicle approaches the access point. The plate is passed to the Norpass controller for validation and, if valid, access is granted to the vehicle.

No need to issue tags

The chosen solution avoids the need to issue vehicle tags to valid users, eliminating initial and ongoing tag replacement costs while reducing administrative time and cost.

“The new system improved customer convenience and put an end to vehicles trying to use the park for a shortcut,” says Gary Jackson, Branch Manager North Region of Sitewatch Fire & Surveillance Ltd.

“The Nedap ANPR has been seamlessly integrated with Nortech’s NORPASS3 which enables customers to manage both number plates and credentials from one central system,” says Stephen Blackler MD Nortech Control Systems Ltd.
