Nedap enables smart bus parking in Singapore

The Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange in Singapore serves over 400.000 passengers every day, while the regional bus interchange is being rebuilt. The temporary station, featured with the latest technological solutions, required a smart bus parking solution for an efficient traffic flow due to these large amount of passengers. Nedap’s SENSIT, the leading smart parking platform, was installed to offer real-time occupancy information of all individual bus parking spaces at the station. This real-time information enables easy guidance of buses to the nearest available parking space. The implementation was realized by Eaglevision.

400.000 passengers per day

With 400.000 passengers every day, Singapore’s Woodlands Regional Bus Interchange is the third biggest bus station in Singapore. As this regional bus interchange will undergo addition and alteration works, a temporary interchange was introduced. It took over operations in March of 2016 and will serve passengers for three years. The Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange is located at Woodlands Town Centre. It serves the residential town of Woodlands, Marsling, Admiralty and surrounding industrial areas.

Innovative interchange station

The interchange is a temporary bus interchange station in which the latest technological solutions are featured. These features include CCTVs placed above queue berths to alert interchange operators to crowds, so the operators can adjust bus arrivals accordingly.

Smart bus parking

Nedap’s SENSIT smart parking sensors have been installed in individual parking spaces to easily guide bus captains to the nearest available parking bay. A large electronic panel shows the number of available parking spaces, so bus captains know exactly where they can park at the moment of arrival. The bus parking bays, where 51 articulated buses and 10 rigid buses can be parked, have been equipped with SENSIT IR sensors and SENSIT Flush Mount sensors have been installed in the Alighting bays at the interchange.

Nedap’s SENSIT system consists of wireless bay-mounted sensors which detect the vehicle occupancy status and duration of parking events at individual parking spots. The system deploys a fast and robust wireless radio communication network which is essential in urban areas.

“SENSIT has proven to be a very highly accurate and stable solution, ensuring smooth traffic flow in a very busy traffic installation,” says James Wang, Director of R&D, Eaglevision Software Pte Ltd.

Saving up to 3 minutes

This smart bus parking solution helps to boost safety as it reduces the likelihood of two drivers heading for the same parking lot. It also saves bus drivers the trouble of looking out for available parking and can save them about three minutes from the time they arrive at the interchange.

“It is great to see the results of this smart bus parking solution in Singapore. Plus the solution is interesting to major Asian tourist cities in specific, as their bus terminal are always extremely busy and managing traffic is a real challenge,” says Melvyn Teo, Business Development Manager at Nedap Identification Systems.

Nedap’s SENSIT installed at Belgium’s biggest port

The Port of Antwerp, the biggest port of Belgium, is characterized by ‘the Havenhuis’. This impressive building, that has the shape of a ship, is both the workplace for 500 employees as the central meeting point for international contacts. Offering a convenient service to its employees and visitors, an important requirement for the modern parking facility was that all drivers have to be informed about the number of available parking spaces in real-time. Nedap’s SENSIT sensors were installed in order to make this reality.

The Havenhuis brings together several departments of the Port of Antwerp. Therefore, the building plays a central role in the port’s operation. It symbolizes the dynamic, ambitious and innovative character of the port of Antwerp. It is the daily workplace for 500 employees and acts as a meeting place for the many international contacts of the Antwerp port community.

Real-time parking information

With a large and modern underground facility, the building offers enough parking spaces for both employees and visitors. An important requirement for the was that all drivers have to be informed about the number of available parking spaces in real-time. In addition, drivers have to be guided to the spaces that are available on the moment of arrival. Nedap’s smart parking system was chosen as it meets both criteria.

A SENSIT Surface Mount sensor installed at every individual parking space detects in real-time whether or not it is occupied and for how long they have been occupied.

Nedap’s SENSIT sensors are installed at the three zones of the parking facility:

  • Parking spaces for electric cars
  • Parking spaces for disabled
  • Other parking spaces

Comfortable parking service

With the installation of the SENSIT system, drivers now know exactly how many parking spaces there are available when they arrive at the parking facility. This smart service creates a fast flow of vehicles and ensures both employees and visitors enjoy the comfort of easily finding an available parking space.

“The combined Nedap systems offer a complete solution that meet all requirements of the Havenhuis. The possibilities of these systems have a lot of potential for the port in the future,” says Marc De Caluwé, network engineer at the Port Of Antwerp.

Nedap technologies combined

Besides Nedap’s SENSIT system to offer real-time parking information, Nedap Security Management’s AEOS system was installed at the Havenhuis. In addition, the anti-theft detection system of Nedap Library Solutions was installed to prevent stealing of books.

Nedap secures vehicle access to Highland Springs community

The gated community Highland Springs wanted to keep an accurate time log of who had access to the community and when. What they were looking for was automated access for vehicles that allows for a quick throughput, while still maintaining a verified credentialing process. Security without sacrificing convenience. Nedap’s TRANSIT was implemented by Federal Protection to offer the best solution that exactly meets the communities’ criteria.

Secure vehicle access

Highland Springs, located just outside of Springfield, MO, has over 500 residents and various contracting workers for landscaping and infrastructure upgrades. For these residents and contracting workers, the luxury community needed a system for secure vehicle access. An important requirement was that congestion at the gate had to be prevented; the solution had to be convenient for the drivers of the vehicles. Besides the residents and contracting workers, access for visitors and other non-residents is managed by a staffed guardhouse.

Bobby J. Smith, Director of Security for Highland Springs, worked with Nedap’s partner Federal Protection out of Springfield, MO to find the best technological solution that would serve the needs of the community without being intrusive on the residents or slow their entry into the community.

Convenient, long-range identification

The residential community has three separate entrances with gated ingress and egress points. Considering the needed read distances, Nedap’s TRANSIT was the best choice. This high-end reader identifies vehicles up to 10 meters (33 ft.). The vehicles of all residents and contracting workers are equipped with the Window Button. This vehicle identification tag is identified as soon as it enters the reading zone of the TRANSIT reader. It allows authorized vehicles to enter the community, without the need to stop at the gate. To make things even stronger for Federal Protection, they had the Window Buttons customized with a laser engraved Federal Protection logo.

Reliable, robust technology

Matt Harrison, Director of Operation at Federal Protection, oversaw the project. As a Nedap certified partner for long-range identification and having worked with Nedap’s readers in the past, felt he had the right solution. “We knew we needed a reliable, robust technology that was not only secure but very easy for the residents to use. Ideally, we needed something that once installed, they would never have to think about again. With the Nedap solution we found just that,” he explains.

“Federal Protection came to us with this very strong Nedap technology and demonstrated its capabilities. Once we reviewed its accuracy and consistency, it was a very easy choice for our residents. Since we installed the system we have been very pleased with its performance,” Smith said.

Nedap’s SENSIT installed at Australian HQ of global supermarket chain

At the Australian headquarters of the leading global discount supermarket chain, quality is of paramount importance. Only the best products are offered to customers. This standard is maintained in every aspect of the international company, which is why the required parking guidance system had to meet the highest criteria. After extensive evaluation, Nedap’s SENSIT was chosen for its high accuracy and quick network. The implementation was realized by Holman Engineering.

The supermarkets’ Australian head office is located in Minchinbury, NSW, Australia. Part of the headquarters is the state-of-the-art Product Development and Quality Assurance Centre. It is the centerpiece of the supermarkets promise to deliver exceptional quality and value to their customers. It is here that new exclusive brands are developed and the ongoing quality testing of products takes place.

Quality guidance system

The same quality aspects also applied for the parking guidance system required to indicate the available parking bays in the car park and outdoor parking area. The system needed to be highly accurate and very quick in displaying the number of available parking spaces at various locations around the car parks.

Real-time parking information

Holman Engineering implemented a solution which uses optical sensors above each parking bay to determine the status of each parking bay for the indoor parking spaces.  Nedap’s SENSIT was applied to monitor occupancy of the outdoor parking bays. SENSIT consists of wireless parking sensors that detect in real-time whether or not the individual parking bays are occupied and how long they have been occupied. The SENSIT Surface Mount is a vehicle detection sensor that is glued onto the surface of parking bays, which offers easy  installation. The sensor is featured with dual detection technology, which ensures the highly accurate detection.

The real-time occupancy information on all parking bays is displayed on several displays along the road. These displays show the indicate the number of available parking bays for visitors and in the general car parks.

Reporting and analyzing

The web interface on the Holman system allows the user to create many different reports, as well as see the status of the car park graphically. “Nedap sensors show an excellent detection accuracy due to the dual technologies featured in each sensor, which is key for providing real time information on availability of parking bays,” says John Holman from Holman Engineering.

Secure vehicle access to 500 million bottles of San Pellegrino with Nedap

Secure vehicle access to 500 million bottles of San Pellegrino with Nedap

When transporting 500 million of bottles of soft drinks per year, ensuring only authorized vehicles and drivers get access to the site is a real challenge. This was the case for the international brand San Pellegrino. The Italian company chose Nedap’s solution for secure vehicle access to their factory sites. The installation of Nedap’s long-range vehicle identification solution was realized by Microntel with the collaboration of ADP.

San Pellegrino, or S.Pellegrino, is a soft drink company based in the Italian spa town of San Pellegrino Terme in the province of Bergamo. The company that was founded in 1899 is known worldwide for its mineral water San Pellegrino and was acquired by Nestlé in 1997. The mineral water is now being exported to most countries worldwide.

500 million of bottles

The annual production of San Pellegrino exceeds the 500 millions of bottles. Most of these bottles are being transported by trucks and other large vehicles. It is therefore important for the Italian company to make sure that only authorized vehicles enter the site of the company.

Efficient access control

In order to realize vehicle access control at the entrances and exits of the site, Nedap’s TRANSIT Ultimate readers were installed. This high-end reader identifies vehicles and its drivers up to 10 meters.

Nedap’s patented Prox-Booster solution is used for vehicles that only need to get access when occupied by an authorized driver. The long-range vehicle identification tag ensures that only valid combinations of drivers and vehicles get access. It is the perfect solution when vehicles are used by different drivers. The Prox-Booster supports reading of the standard 125kHz EM card, which is the existing driver credential applied for access control throughout the site. The Prox- Booster is used for vehicles owned by San Pellegrino, to monitor driver and truck combinations. Besides the Prox- Booster, the Window Button Switch is used for identification of vehicles that get occasional or temporary access to the site. This tag is designed for applications where the driver determines the time and distance of the identification (user activation).

Once the vehicle and driver are identified by the TRANSIT Ultimate, the access management system of Microntel makes sure the barrier opens after verifying if the combination is authorized. Every activity is then registered in a log file for data processing. The security staff can monitor all handling activities.

In control of all vehicles

The combined access control solution of Nedap and Microntel offers a better control of all vehicles entering and leaving the secured sites. As a result San Pellegrino knows exactly who got access and when. Drivers enjoy the comfort of fast procedures when arriving to the gates in order to pick up a cargo or depart with a vehicle full of bottles.

This installation was realized by Microntel in collaboration with ADP.

Infracontrol and Nedap ensure smooth traffic flow at Port of Gothenburg

Infracontrol and Nedap ensure smooth traffic flow at Port of Gothenburg

The Port of Gothenburg has created a new common entrance for truck traffic called Port Entry. The aim is to provide a better reception and a more efficient flow of traffic through the harbor. To create a smooth traffic flow and make it easier for drivers to park their trucks, the parking management system of Infracontrol has been implemented. Nedap’s SENSIT installed at the parking bays in combination with a dynamic sign guide drivers to an available parking bay.

Better reception and smoother traffic flow

The new port entry site will serve ID checks and clearance for all Port of Gothenburg terminals. The entry is for the trucks that are not pre-registered, and each terminal will have its own reception desk. After notification, the trucks go directly to the port terminal where all goods that they transport will be delivered or picked up.

“This is a real boost for truck traffic to the port . A common ID control of all freight terminals easier for the drivers. In addition, traffic will be directed to the new outer harbor junction,” said Magnus Nordfeldt , project manager at the Port of Gothenburg said in a press release. “There will be a better reception of the drivers with these modern facilities.”

An important part of the solution to create a better flow and make it easier for drivers to park, is the parking management system delivered by Infracontrol. “The system consists of snow plough resistant in-ground sensors in individual parking bays and a sign indicating the direction in which the drivers should drive to find the nearest available spot,” says Jonas Bratt, project manager at Infracontrol. It is connected to Infracontrol Online service for controlling, monitoring and logging.

Trucks are allowed to park for a short time only, while the verification of the documents takes place. If a truck is parked longer than 30 minutes, the staff is informed via an app. This app shows which bay is concerned, which makes the enforcement of the usage of the bays efficient. The system also provides detailed data on the usage of individual parking spaces to optimize the logistics.

Flexible system solution

As in most Swedish cities, the Port of Gothenburg system parking management system is based on Infracontrol Online. One of the biggest advantages is that the systems can be easily adapted to varying needs. “Our cloud service is a system that is scalable and can be adapted to changing needs,” says Jonas Bratt. Wireless in-ground detection sensors in individual parking spaces and simple setup features make it easy to move or add more signs and more parking sites when needed. All user functions can be accessed via internet or mobile phone. This applies to both operational monitoring that triggers an alarm if something does not work and to set parameters.

“Parking Management system help both accessibility and the environment, even if it is in a small scale here,” says Johan Höglund, CEO of Infracontrol. “It is smart to connect this type of small-scale ITS solutions to Infracontrol Online, as it makes the system installation simpler and cheaper while ensuring high reliability, availability, and has a good future security.”

Nedap secures parking areas at Dubai Airport Freezone

October 11, 2016

Nedap

Nedap secures parking areas at Dubai Airport Freezone

As the leading free zone in the Middle East, Dubai Airport offers excellent facilities and services. The reserved parking areas for tenants illustrate the top-class facilities the free zone offers. With Nedap’s solution for long-range vehicle identification, safe and convenient access control to these areas is guaranteed. This solution was integrated by Alpha Plus Security & Alarm Sys.

Leading free zone in the Middle East

As the leading free zone services provider in the Middle East, Dubai Airport Freezone (DAFZA) offers integrated business solutions to the global business community. The location, world-class facilities and the investment incentives and tax exemptions are just some of DAFZA’s exclusivities. Companies within the freezone achieve greater functional efficiency at a lower operational costs.

Reserved parking areas

An example of the excellent facilities are the reserved parking areas. To gain control over the entry to the entrances to these areas, a system based on remote controllers was installed. With remote controllers, the tenants could control the barriers directly, which resulted in abusing the parking facility. Plus many cases of lost and damaged remote controllers happened and there was no close monitoring of who is actually using the parking facility and when.

Access for authorized people only

To add the high level of security that is needed in an environment like an airport free zone, Nedap’s long-range vehicle identification system uPASS was installed to provide safe and convenient vehicle access without forcing tenants to stop their vehicle. Every resident uses a UHF Windshield Tag or UHF ISO Card that contains a unique identification number. The uPASS Reach, based on UHF (Ultra High Frequency) technology, allows consistent reading of up to 5 meters, so tenants do not have to stop to present their badge anymore. Automatic vehicle identification ensures a smooth flow of authorized people only and increases the safety of tenants, suppliers and staff.

Nedap’s uPASS readers are connected to an access control system, which will make the process of rolling out identifiers much easier, in addition to the added security. This solution was integrated by Alpha Plus Security & Alarm Sys., the company that provides professional security solutions for local authorities, industrial and commercial clients.

Convenient access

While the security of the reserved parking areas at DAFZA is vastly improved, gaining access at a distance up to 5 meters with Nedap’s uPASS Reach is hands-free. This makes gaining access to the areas quick and easy.

As a result of the implemented vehicle access control system, the parking is now better utilized by tenants and the authority. The Nedap solution is easy to manage and to expand. Another benefit for DAFZA is that no maintenance costs are involved.

This Nedap solution for long-range vehicle identification was integrated with gate barriers of FAAC and Magnetic, access control of Sensor UK and wireless access points of D-Link.

Poland parks wiser with Nedap and Parkanizer

BT Skyrise, developer of IT solutions for smart cities from Poland, has chosen Nedap, the leading specialist for vehicle identification and detection systems, to improve on-street parking. The brandnew Parkanizer platform from BT Skyrise collects and shares data for parking guidance and reporting purposes. SENSIT from Nedap closely monitors the real-time usage of on-street parking spaces by parking bay mounted sensors. To improve on-street parking in time restricted zones, Parkanizer recently is introduced in the Polish city Piekary Śląskie.

BT Skyrise is part of BT Signal, a Norwegian technology company which is a pioneer in the implementation of solutions in the field of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). BT Skyrise designs, implements and tests IT solutions. Nedap is the developer and manufacturer of SENSIT: a vehicle detection system that consists of wireless bay-mounted sensors that detect in real-time whether or not a single parking bay is occupied and how long it has been occupied. SENSIT is integrated with the Parkanizer platform.

The Parkanizer platform

Parkanizer is the brandnew platform of BT Skyrise. It displays the availability and pricing of parking spaces to drivers through a smartphone app, to ensure smooth parking guidance and efficient payment for parking. Parkanizer Analytics is designed for operators to closely manage, monitor and control the real-time usage of parking spaces.

Launch in Polish cities

BT Skyrise’s first implementation of Parkanizer can be found in Piekary Śląskie.. The city is located in the shadow of the cities Katowice and Gliwice, part of the Silesian metropolitan area in the south of Poland with a population of 2.1 million people. Parkanizer is introduced to improve the usage of on-street parking spaces in the time restricted parking zones in the city center.

Mobile parking app

Maciej Lukas, Parkanizer Project Coordinator.: “Parkanizer can be used by motorists driving into a city. The smartphone app displays dynamic markers on a map including the number of available parking spaces in geo-location context. Parking spaces reserved for people with disabilities are marked separately. While driving motorists receive updates in real-time. The app could be also used with a navigation.. When approaching the destination, Parkanizer informs where in the street the vacant parking spaces can be found. When parked, the app can be used to pay on-line.”

Reporting on parking utilization

Short-stay parking zones enhance the traffic rotation on parking spaces, making the city center more attractive for residents, visitors and local retailers. Helping motorists to find a free parking space results in less congestions and safer streets. Time restricted parking zones stimulate the business of local shop owners and retailers. Additionally, cities are able to significantly improve the control of parking spaces. Abuse of time restricted parking spaces, for example by people that are overstaying the permitted parking duration, detected by Nedap’s bay-mounted parking sensor, can be monitored closely and enforced effectively.

By the implementation of the Parkanizer cities like Piekary Śląskiegain precise knowledge about on-street parking. “With the new Parkanizer solution, residents and visitors more easily find free parking spaces and we as a city can more efficiently manage our existing parking capacity,” says Sława Umińska-Duraj, the Mayor of Piekary Śląskie.

Partnership BT Skyrise and Nedap

SENSIT from Nedap consist of bay-mounted parking sensors using a dual-detection technology, combined magnetic and infrared, to ensure the most accurate vehicle detection measuring. Through the wireless radio communication network this information is transmitted to the central hosted server. The real-time parking occupancy status and parking duration information is made available from that cloud-based server to the Parkanizer platform.

Jaroslaw Pilarczyk, CEO of BT Skyrise: “Nedap has proven to be the right technology partner, with expertise in deploying sensor networks, smoothly integrated with end-user applications, in cities for many years. SENSIT is a fast and reliable sensor-based system designed outdoor parking spaces located on or off street.”

“The parking industry in Poland is changing rapidly. Cities are showing increasing interest in smart parking solutions. Nedap is therefore pleased to start a partnership with BT Skyrise, an innovative company and developer of Parkanizer, an easy to use and complete mobile parking applicaiton for both motorists and operators,” says Ido Wentink, Business Development Manager at Nedap.

Parkanizer in the media

The implementation of Parkanizer in the city of Piekary Śląskie was loudly commented in the Polish national media: TV news reports (Teleexpress, TVN Turbo), newspapers (Gazeta Wyborcza, Dziennik Zachodni), portals (onet.pl, myapple.pl) and radio stations (Polskie Radio). All media paid attention on innovative character of the solution, user friendliness and social aspect of Parkanizer.
