WASHINGTON, January 9, 2019: National Parking Association (NPA) and Women in Parking (WIP), long-time collaborators and peer organizations, announce their plans to unite, with unanimous support from both boards.

With NPAs reputation as the premier association for parking professionals and WIPs increased momentum, the combined organization will have the leadership, reach, and voice necessary to amplify the advancement and achievement of women in the parking industry.

“The strategic union with WIP will solidify the parking industry’s commitment to diversity and workforce development,” said NPA Board Chair Nicolle Judge. “By combining WIP’s fervor with NPA’s expanding member base, we can align our efforts to develop even more parking professionals.”

NPA and WIP have collaborated over the history of both organizations, including hosting the WIP conference alongside NPA’s annual convention, sponsoring and volunteering with WIP. Nicolle Judge is a prior Women in Parking Board Director.

“Women in Parking and NPA have been long time partners. The reputation of NPA, coupled with the momentum of the women in parking movement, makes this the perfect time to officially unite.” said WIP Board Chair Marcy Sparrow.

Ruth Beaman, Executive Director of WIP said, “We’re confident that joining forces and focusing our efforts will mean that we can provide our parking leaders with the best practice tools, research and peer network the parking industry has to offer.”

The Boards of Directors of both organizations have approved the plan to unite.Over the course of the year, NPA and WIP will work to transition to a single operational structure.

The entire membership of WIP will become a part of NPA’s membership and will begin receiving NPA welcome materials and access to NPA benefits beginning March 1, 2019. NPA will host a welcome call in mid-February for all WIP members to learn more about the organization and transition.

NPA President Christine Banning, IOM, CAE said, “We are very proud to join forces with Women in Parking and take the transition process very seriously. NPA leadership will do everything in its power to ensure the transition is seamless, and all WIP members continue to play an active role in the organization.”

NPA ISSUE ALERT: Parking Industry Launches Parking United Agenda

November 16, 2018

NPA ISSUE ALERT:
Parking Industry Launches Parking United Agenda

NPA Members:

This is an NPA Issue Alert: The NPA Board of Directors established a new strategic plan to focus on the pressing issues, opportunities and distribution facing the parking industry. The NPA Strategic Plan has three pillars 1) Be Recognized as The Leading Authority & Advocate for the Parking Industry; 2) Advance Member Experience & Value through the Power of Collaboration; and 3) Define the Future of Parking.

As a result of this plan, NPA has developed an integrated plan to participate, collaborate and lead on research and advocacy issues that can impact the parking industry. Parking United is the movement to rally industry supporters for fund a $1 million research and advocacy program. Early supporters of the program are listed below.

Reducing Congestion Study with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC): NPA’s first effort to transform parking industry research is to enter the larger transportation and mobility space bringing new thought leadership, which includes a vision for reducing congestion, fostering public/private collaboration and highlighting parking’s congestion fighting role.

Today, there is no congestion pricing in the United States. But, as cities and states struggle with unbalanced budgets, pension short-falls and traffic congestion—positive solutions not regressive actions should be considered

Congestion Policy: NPA supports fair and equitable zoning and planning for infrastructure use that maximizes the effectiveness of cities for the movement of people, goods and services with a citizen/consumer centered approach based on community needs as the driver for decision making. Parking is one lever in the first/last mile of transportation. An Ecosystem Approach to Reducing Congestion brings you as parking leaders into the dialogue with a fact-based tool you can share with political leaders, planners and allies.

NPA Reducing Congestion launch: In New York City on November 13, NPA met with the financial markets, investors and the media in mid-town Manhattan to provide advance copies of the reducing congestion study in advance of a series of media briefings from November-January.

In the Know: NPA News Releases Announcing Study Findings: A series of NPA news releases will release key study findings. News releases will be available HERE on the release dates.

  • November 14: NPA Releases Groundbreaking Study on New Ways to Reduce Congestion for Livable Cities. Study Highlights Congestion Facts, Planning Models and New Congestion Fighting Tools. CLICK HERE
  • November 17: NPA Announces Study Findings with New Ways to Reduce Congestion for Livable Cities. Study Highlights Congestion Facts, Planning Models and New Congestion Fighting Tools
  • November 26: NPA Supports Study Findings for Mobility Hubs and Shared Parking to Get Rid of Gridlock. PwC Study an Ecosystem Approach to Reducing Congestion Provides New Policy Tools

Quotes from the Study:

“Parking is an important tool and has the ability to reduce congestion.”

“Parking can be an effective tool to declutter roads and reduce curb congestion.”

“Although its congestion-fighting potential hasn’t always been recognized, parking is important to the smooth functioning of a city’s transportation ecosystem.”

“The introduction of mobility hubs, curb management, adaptive design and advanced automation all provide options for improving the use of existing infrastructure and its capacity.”

NPA Role: Support a pro parking agenda that demonstrates the value of parking today and in the future with applications for smart parking, shared parking and mobility within a transportation ecosystem. NPA will advocate for planning and zoning policies that provide common sense solutions to make mobility easy with an emphasis on mobility hubs, reinventing the curb and reducing/eliminating parking minimums.

Your Role:

NPA Takes Stand Against NYT Opinion Article Harmful to the Parking Industry

September 26, 2018

NPA Takes Stand Against NYT Opinion Article
Harmful to the Parking Industry

Leadership responds with a Letter to the Editor of The New York Times

NPA Members:

This is an NPA Issue Alert: An opinion piece was recently published in The New York Times advocating for an increase in parking tax to reduce congestion in New York City. The author, from San Francisco, suggests operators should be required to pay a 35% parking tax and eliminate monthly parking contracts. The full article can be found HERE.

NPA’s Position: NPA is committed to ensuring parking is positioned as an integral part of the transportation ecosystem. Congestion is a complex problem and parking is a solution that moves traffic off the active roadway—it should be fully optimized. The ideas in the NYT article are impractical and punitive to consumers and operators.

NPA Response: NPA cannot let these concepts stand without comment. We have engaged Golin as our PR agency of record. As a first response, we have submitted a letter to the editor of the NYT refuting the article, signed by NPA’s Board Chair Alan Lazowski. You can read the letter HERE.

As part of NPA’s strategic plan in becoming the leading authority and advocate for the parking industry to safeguard industry interests, we are undertaking a multi-year research program. Our first major study on reducing congestion will be released at the NPA Convention, October 22-25 in Las Vegas. This landmark study will provide insight on parking as a shared mobility solution to reduce congestion. Details on the inception and creation of this study can be found HERE.

NPA Support: We will continue to provide updates on issues affecting members. If you see positions detrimental to parking, let us know. Please reach out to Michelle De Graff, Director of Strategic Projects, with any questions or comments.

National Parking Association Heads First Study to Identify the Complete Picture of Urban Congestion

September 26, 2018

National Parking Association Heads First Study to Identify the Complete Picture of Urban Congestion

Washington, DC  — The National Parking Association (NPA) has commissioned PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to conduct nationwide research to identify trends and investigate the causes, economic impact, and potential solutions for urban congestion. This first of its kind study investigates the intersection of parking and transportation to form a holistic picture of the urban transportation landscape.

THE FACTS:

  • Congestion cost all US cities in total an estimated $305 billion in 2017. (US DOT – Bureau of Transportation Statistics)
  • Congestion costs commuters $1,000 per person per year. (2018 INRIX traffic score card)
  • The U.S. population of 327 million today will increase to 348 million by 2027 with more than 84% of the population concentrated in urban areas.

NPA’s research will identify how planning and infrastructure in urban areas can support the transportation needs of the population, while managing congestion and reducing economic impacts.

“This research into reducing congestion will provide insights into real-world approaches for mitigating congestion, managing roadway throughput and halting unchecked congestion costs to citizens, cities and employers,” said Christine Banning, NPA president.  “The parking industry is making a significant multi-year commitment to dedicate itself to research related to meaningful transportation, congestion and mobility issues that impact commuters, communities and the economy.”

Banning leads NPA and its 2,500 members in representing all facets of the parking industry. She serves on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Transportation Committee.  Principals and consultants from PwC’s Strategy, Global Automotive Practice, and U.S. Mobility Practice, comprise the core research team producing the report.

“PwC’s expertise and insights into the Internet of Things (IoT), automotive industry and mobility innovations will strengthen the foundation of the study. The analysis of macro-economic trends cross-referenced to automotive and congestion information will form a wide angle viewing lens for exploring real-world solutions for possible solutions for reducing congestion.” adds Banning.

Private vehicles, public transportation, parking and infrastructure form the urban transportation ecosystem. Parking is the beginning and end-point of the first and last mile. Understanding how communities are served by this ecosystem can provide new insights into the city of the future and transportation solutions to meet the needs of a growing population.

Zero Emission Shuttle Buses Revolutionize the Parking Industry

with Cost Savings and Clean Air for Southern California

Ontario, CA. (October 31, 2017) Phoenix Motorcars L.L.C. was honored by the National Parking Association (NPA) with the 2017 Innovative Sustainability Project of the Year Award. Phoenix Motorcars was selected for the work done in partnership with the L & R Group of companies to bring the first fully zero emission electric shuttle fleet in the nation to Southern California at LAX airport. The award was presented at the annual NPA Convention & Expo, held this year in Palm Springs, CA, October 2-5th.

“We express our sincere gratitude to the NPA for this award.  We are excited to continue working with LNR and our other partners in supplying commercial fleets with proven electric vehicles that provide substantial operational and emission savings.” said Emad Fakhoury, Chief Executive Officer of Phoenix Motorcars.

About the Project

Phoenix Motorcars collaborated with L & R Group of Companies to replace gas powered shuttle buses at Los Angeles International Airport with Phoenix’s Zero Emission Utility Shuttles (ZEUS) buses. L&R subsidiary, Wally Park Premier, deployed 16 ZEUS buses at the Los Angeles Airport, making it the first all-electric fleet of airport-parking shuttle buses in the USA. By deploying a total of 33 ZEUS buses, L&R will be able to convert 4.2 million gas miles to all-electric miles over a 5-year period and reduce tailpipe emissions significantly.

Through government incentives of as much as $100,000 per shuttle bus, the cost of switching to an all-electric fleet was kept to a minimum. The result is more than $3.6 million in total cost-of- ownership savings over an equivalent CNG fleet, due to lower fuel and maintenance costs.

“The NPA Innovation Awards recognize companies and individuals who demonstrate the highest professionalism and parking best practices while using leadership and state-of-the-art technology to improve safety, sustainability and bottom line results,” said NPA President Christine Banning, MA, CAE.
