Smart phone to unlock the City of Fremantle’s Integrated Parking Management System

City of Fremantle has chosen Database Consultants Australia (DCA) as the preferred supplier to deliver their smart city parking strategy. The city is looking to improve community parking satisfaction and has chosen DCA’s Integrated Parking Management System (IPMS) to provide a higher quality community experience.

The awarding of the city’s IPMS to DCA follows a surge in demand for its innovative smart phone parking app PayStay, which is the fastest growing consumer parking solution in Australia.

DCA Director of Smart City Technologies Sandy Del Papa said the smart phone is key to citizens unlocking the benefits of smart cities.

“Through the introduction of state-of-the-art technology we’ll look to make the best of the City of Fremantle’s parking network and deliver greater efficiency and optimisation of available parking. We’ll support the city with optimal access and insight to mobility data to increase the city’s ability to make data-driven decisions and ultimately deliver a truly connected parking experience to the citizens of Fremantle” Del Papa said.

The imminent delivery of the IPMS aligns directly with the city’s goals of developing a responsible social, economic and environmentally efficient city and delivering the subsequent benefits to the community. DCA will deliver an integrated suite of technologies including pay by smart phone solution, PayStay. This proven technology will enable motorists to search via their smart phone for parking, navigate to parking and pay only for the time they require, together with optional notification of when their parking will expire, all within a single highly functional app.

In partnership with DCA the city will also address the emerging demand for digital permit solutions, with the introduction of ePermits. ePermits offer both convenience and flexibility to citizens with online applications, payment and issuing, together with flexible digital visitor permits.

Actibump activated in Australia

Curtin University in Perth, Australia, has now activated their two Actibump systems, as their students are returning from summer break.

  • We’re looking forward to the results, says Graham Arndt, Director of Operations and Maintenance at Curtin
  • Curtin University will be performing research on the We will be looking at the behavioural change it causes, says Mr. Arndt.

Two Actibump systems have been installed on a road traversing the Curtin University campus in Perth.

  • About 70 % of the vehicles on this street are There are around 2000 vehicles per day and the speed limit is 40 kph. We needed to do something about it, says Mr. Arndt.
  • We chose the Actibump because it only affects drivers that are speeding and because the system is so We can set speed limit and other variables via software, which increases flexibility and the system is also programmable for other applications.

David Eskilsson, General Manager at Edeva, the inventor of the Actibump, says:

  • The system collects speed data for every passing We are looking at the results and are already seeing a decrease of the number of speeding vehicles. We recognise this trend from our Swedish installations.

The official activation of the Actibumps at Curtin University was held during a visit from the organisation Parking Australia.

  • There was a lot of interest in the system from the We’ve also see that the system is very efficient. The drivers were surprised to see the road “disappear in front of them” and this made them slow down, says Mr. Arndt.

About Edeva and the Actibump:

Edeva develops traffic systems for liveable cities to help customers create accessible, safe and secure traffic situations. We work on a global market with municipalities, regions, cities, public entities, universities, logistics companies, harbours, airports, industries and toll stations. The company was founded in 2009 in Linköping, Sweden. There are currently circa 35 Actibump units installed in Sweden: on three separate sites in the city of Linköping, three sites in the city of Malmö and one site in each of the cities of Helsingborg, Västerås and Uppsala as well as in all nine lanes at the toll station on the Øresund bridge in the direction from Sweden to Denmark, and now four units installed at the Bentley campus of Curtin University in Perth, Australia.

The Actibump traffic safety system allows full accessibility for all vehicles driven at, or under, the set speed limit. Speeding vehicles are physically reminded of the speed limit by an inverted speedbump. A radar measures the speed of the oncoming vehicles and speeding vehicles activate a hatch that is lowered a few centimetres into the road surface. For non-speeders the hatch remains level with the road surface.

Independent evaluations have shown that the system decreases the noise, improves yielding behaviour and decreases the speed to that of the speed limit ±3 km/h, regardless of speed limit or previous speeding behaviour.

Speed limit and other variables are set through a web-based interface that also presents the statistics collected by the system.

Parking Australia Convention & Exhibition Comes to a Close

pace2016

Today marks the close of the Parking Australia Convention and Exhibition (PACE) 2016, which saw over 300 industry professionals attend the two-day event at Crown Perth. This year marked the 15th biennial convention and exhibition and coincided with Parking Australia’s 30th anniversary.

The parking industry continues to face rapid change on a number of fronts, from technological advances, policy changes, developments in the transport environment and economic realities. In keeping with the theme of ‘Raising the Bar’, this year’s conference provided an opportunity for attendees to learn about the current trends and developments taking place in the industry.

“PACE 2016 was bigger and better than ever before,” said Lorraine Duffy, Chief Executive at Parking Australia. “The landmark event saw a number of thought leaders discuss some of the biggest trends impacting the parking industry. I would like to thank all our speakers, sponsors and exhibitors for raising the standards of the parking industry in Australia.”

“I would also like to thank the Hon. Michael Sutherland MLA, Member for Mt Lawley and Speaker for the Legislative Assembly, for opening PACE 2016, as well as Christina Morrissy, Channel 9 and 6PR presenter, who was an excellent MC for the event,” she continued.

This year saw some high profile international and national keynote speakers present at PACE. Vanessa Solesbee, Practice Builder with Kimley-Horn and Associates, held a keynote session on Wednesday 9th November discussing how to facilitate a meaningful community dialogue about parking, whilst Kieran Fitsall, Head of Service Improvement and Transformation at Westminster City Council, opened the final day on Thursday 10th November with a case study on Westminster Council in the UK.
The third keynote speaker, Rachel Smith, Urban Transport Planner and Author, discussed technology, disruptors, robots, fear and our Aussie sense of entitlement during her keynote session.

Key highlights during the convention were also the Australian Driverless Vehicle Initiative’s electric powered driverless POD, as well as the site visit to Perth Airport, the announcement of the Accredited Operator Scheme and Parking Australia’s 30th Birthday Party.

Two New Directors Appointed to the Board

During this year’s convention, Parking Australia also held its Annual General Meeting of the company where two directors were elected to the board.

Graham Arndt, Director of Asset Management at Curtin University in WA, was re-elected to the Board of Directors. Arndt has been a director of the board since 2010 and has been actively involved in the parking industry since 2005.

Arndt will continue to offer his experience, learnings and insight to work towards making Parking Australia the go-to organisation, and leading voice, for parking issues in Australia. He is one of the longest serving board members and will provide continuity as Parking Australia continues to raise the bar and standards of the parking industry.

Joining Arndt is Mosstyn Howell, Founder and CEO at UbiPark, who joins the board of directors for the first time. He has over 15 years’ experience working in the parking industry and strives to connect the parking world with the emerging technologies and industries that will have a major impact on how we commute in the future.

“It is my great pleasure to welcome Mosstyn to the board and of course see Graham retain his position. They both bring unparalleled experience and insight to the board, and will be huge assets towards delivering the initiatives Parking Australia will be launching over the coming year,” said Duffy.
