Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute Announces 2023 PCI Design Awards Winners

 

 

CHICAGO  –The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute is excited to announce the winners of 2023 PCI Design Awards. Three panels of jurors honored 25 winners and eight honorable mentions for the specials, buildings, and transportation categories.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the PCI Design Awards program which recognizes creative and innovative useses of precast concrete. A panel of engineers, architects, and precast concrete producers judges all nominees. The buildings and transportation categories are judged on aesthetic, structural, and use versatility; site, energy and operational efficiency, and risk reduction; and resiliency, such as structure durability, multi-hazard protection, and life safety and health.

Several projects are also honored with special awards. These are judged on similar criteria to the building and transportation projects, as well as additional requirements, including industry advancement, sustainable design, technology, and designs using all-precast concrete solutions. These are the Harry H. Edwards Industry Advancement Award, the Building Information Modeling (BIM) Award, the Sustainable Design Award, and the All-Precast Concrete Solution Award.

“We are once again thrilled to recognize the tremendous capabilities of the precast concrete industry to meet the needs of the built environment, especially on this milestone 60th anniversary of the program,” said PCI President and CEO Bob Risser, PE. “Congratulations to all the winners, and thanks to the jurors and PCI staff who make the program a success. Through the past 60 years, the precast concrete industry continues to innovate and improve and these exemplary projects are the latest examples of that.”

Winning projects will be recognized February 24 at the 2022 PCI Convention in Columbus, Ohio. PCI publications, including Ascent, PCI Journal, and ASPIRE magazines, will also feature the winning projects.

In November 2022, Denison Parking began managing the Energy Center Ramp, a 574-space public parking facility in downtown Minneapolis. This location was formerly known as the Clearway Energy Ramp. Its updated name reflects a recent ownership change to Cordia Energy.

Taylor Kim, AIA, LEED® AP, Associate Principal, Parksmart Advisor, started her career with Watry Design in 2007. Named one of the National Parking Association’s 40 Under 40, Taylor is dedicated to developing innovative solutions for her clients. She has led the design of parking solutions for landmark projects such as The Rise in Cupertino and the California Avenue Parking Structure in Palo Alto, and is a member of the Parking Consultants’ Council.

 

Anita Gupta, SE, Associate Principal, has been with Watry Design for 19 years and has extensive experience in parking structure design and renovation. Anita’s passion for parking can be seen in projects such as the Mineta San Jose International Airport ConRAC & Economy Parking Structures and the award-winning San Jose State University South Campus Multi-Level Parking Structure. In addition to delivering on the expectations of her clients, Anita heads the firm’s Justice, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee.

 

Gordon Knowles, Associate Principal, brought over 20 years of experience in architecture when he joined Watry Design in 2016. Currently, he is working to improve the patient experience at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.

Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute Releases Industry-Wide EPD

 

SCHAUMBURG, IL  – The Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI) has released an industry-wide Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for Fabricated Steel Reinforcement Bar used in reinforced concrete construction. The EPD updates CRSI’s previous EPD published in 2017 and is available for download here or on the CRSI website.

Aware of the increasing interest in transparent reporting of a product’s cradle-to-gate environmental performance, CRSI desires to demonstrate their sustainability leadership and leverage business value. To accomplish this, the Institute evaluated the environmental profile of fabricated steel reinforcing bar by conducting a cradle-to-gate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of fabricated reinforcing steel that resulted in the new version of the CRSI EPD.

The analysis was conducted according to the UL Environment’s Product Category Rules (PCR) Part A: Life Cycle Assessment Calculation Rules and Report Requirements and Part B: Designated Steel Construction Product EPD Requirements (UL Environment, 2018; UL Environment, 2020) and covers fabricated steel reinforcing bar defined by the following standards:
* ASTM A615/A615M Standard Specification for Deformed and Plain Carbon-Steel Bars for Concrete Reinforcement
* ASTM A706/A706M Standard Specification for Deformed and Plain Low-Alloy Steel Bars for Concrete Reinforcement

Steel is the most recycled material in the world, with U.S. producers recycling more than 70 million tons of scrap each year. In reinforced concrete, the steel reinforcing bars consist of over 97% recycled material produced at U.S. mills.

V2’s proprietary carbon fiber T-Biscuit has proven to be the simplest and most economical solution on the market today to repair failed flange-to-flange shear connectors of pre-cast double tee beams, which often fail as a result of fatigue and/or corrosion.

The next generation product, fabricated from custom-engineered CFRP laminate, meets or exceeds all the demanding capacities of the original T-Biscuit, and it accommodates the loads and fatigue increasingly associated with shear connection failure.

Understanding the additional specifications dictated by the newer, thinner, and wider double tee beam designs, company engineers consulted with V2 customers to ensure the redesigned T-Biscuit met the new requirements and was more user-friendly for installers.

The New and Improved T-Biscuit

•           Meets or exceeds precast concrete code requirements published by ACI and PCI.

•           Increases in-plane bending capacity by 330% over the previous product.

•           Closely mirrors the joint deflection characteristics of a standard welded connection.

•           Significantly reduces stress in the tee flange during reverse bending and in-plane movements resulting from thermal volume change.

•           Sports a new geometry that allows for the installation in all currently produced double tee beam thicknesses, and accommodates a deeper depression for the backer rod and joint sealant.
