Europe’s first solar car park with carbon-friendly construction to open for public use

  • Wiltshire Council debuts the first low-carbon wooden framed Solar Car Park installation
  • Solar Car Park at Five Rivers Health & Wellbeing Centre in Salisbury will contribute over 10% of the centre’s overall electricity usage and save £50,000 on annual bills
  • Carbon footprint of the installation and end of life disposal is minimised through the use of alternative frame materials, bifacial solar panels and sustainable ground anchor system, without concrete
  • Five Rivers also becomes the first leisure centre in the UK to install 3ti’s award-winning Papilio3 pop-up solar car park that can fast charge up to 12 EVs simultaneously.

Leatherhead, 4 March 2024 – 3ti®, the UK’s leading designer, installer, funder and operator of Solar Car Parks (SCPs) is installing the first large-scale SCP in Europe to be constructed from sustainable Glulam timber beams and Glass-Glass solar panels. Opening to the public in April, the new SCP at Wiltshire Council’s Five Rivers Health & Wellbeing Centre is a significant leap in maximising the lifetime sustainability of solar installations and showcases several advanced technologies that revolutionise the construction, efficiency and visual appeal of SCPs.

The new SCP structure is made from Glulam, renewable, recyclable wood laminations bonded together to offer a natural alternative to steel or concrete. The engineered timber affords significant advantages over structural steel; it is three times stronger and a third lighter, and uses only a tenth of the energy it would take to produce an equivalent steel beam, contributing to a more sustainable building process. The material has minimal environmental impact from its production, is highly repairable, and is an excellent biofuel at the end of its life, further minimising waste.

As part of the construction, 3ti has used special Spirafix™ ground anchors to secure the SCP structure, without using conventional concrete bases or steel piles. This achieves significant carbon savings, speeds up the installation process, is more durable and can be recycled or properly disposed of once the anchors reach the end of their lifecycle.

The solar installation at Five Rivers comprises three gullwing solar canopies covering 70 car park spaces, with a combined total capacity of c.220 kWp. The leisure centre will use 100% of the solar generation on-site, which will contribute approximately 10% of overall electricity demand at the site, saving around £50,000 a year on electricity bills. In its first year, the Five Rivers SCP is expected to generate 186MWh of electricity, enough to drive 679,856 miles in a modern EV, saving 36 tonnes of carbon emissions – the equivalent of planting nearly 600 trees and powering 50 homes.

The canopies are fitted with transparent Glass-Glass solar panels from German manufacturer, Solarwatt®. The panels offer high efficiency and long-term yields thanks to their bifacial technology, which means solar energy is captured on both sides of the panel increasing total energy generation. The solar cells are embedded in a highly durable Glass-Glass composite protecting them from challenging environmental and mechanical stress, including snow and hailstorms, and are ammonia and salt mist resistant.

In addition to its large scale SCP, Five Rivers recently became the first leisure facility in the UK to install 3ti’s award-winning Papilio3®pop-up solar car park and EV charging hub. Papilio3 is built around a recycled shipping container, and can be installed in under eight hours. It can fast charge 12 EVs at 7, 11 or 22kW simultaneously, ideal for a range of destinations with longer dwell times, removing the reliance on carbon-intense and costly ultra-rapid charge points. Pre-fitted with a range of innovations and safety features, including motion lighting, CCTV, advertising screens and full accessibility for wheelchair users, Papilio3 can be rented on a monthly basis from 3ti.

Philip McMullan, Senior Technical Lead on Major Energy Projects at Wiltshire Council, said: “We have invested heavily in sustainability to achieve our 2030 carbon neutral goals. The new solar installations at Five Rivers will help reduce our carbon footprint and support the local community with the transition to zero emission motoring by strengthening the county’s EV charging infrastructure.”

Tim Evans, Founder & CEO at 3ti, adds: “Our job is to champion workplace and destination EV charging to promote a ‘charge where you stop’ mentality across the UK, while supporting customers to achieve their sustainability goals. Better EV charging infrastructure at destinations with long dwell times – offices, hospitals and leisure facilities like Five Rivers – will encourage greater EV adoption rates; it’s refreshing to see Wiltshire Council adopting such a forward-thinking approach, and we are honoured to play a part in their sustainability vision.

“We are constantly evolving our SCP products and are proud to feature these innovative new designs, construction materials and techniques at Five Rivers. Introducing these features means we can offer better durability and versatility than conventional materials and significantly reduce carbon emissions generated across the entire product lifecycle. This installation marks a major milestone on our journey to supporting customers and society as a whole; we will continue to work with facilities around the UK to roll out installations to support future generations and ‘leave something better behind®’.”

Alchemco Proudly Aligns with USGBC as Member Supporting Green Building

– Non-Toxic Waterproofing Systems Helping Buildings Achieve LEED Certification –

HENRICO, Va., (August 17, 2022) – An industry leader in concrete waterproofing systems, Alchemco is not only known for its cutting-edge products, but also adhering to the highest green standards for the industry. As a company that prioritizes creating non-toxic products without volatile organic compounds (VOCs), Alchemco is a proud member of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

The USGBC is an organization committed to growing the number of buildings and structures operated through LEED – the world’s predominant green building rating system. Short for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, LEED-certified buildings meet critical climate change goals, proving they are constructed with improved efficiency, lower carbon emissions, and public health in mind. New construction projects seeking LEED certification must meet prerequisites related to carbon, energy, water, waste, transportation, materials, health and indoor environmental quality. A verification process leads to the awarding of points that determine the building’s level of LEED certification, which can be Silver, Gold, or Platinum.

Due to the USGBC’s mission to transform how buildings in the U.S. are designed, constructed and operated, more than 10,000 buildings are LEED-certified today. This designation has played a critical role in the success of companies nationwide, as 61% of corporate leaders believe verified sustainability efforts serve as a market differentiator leading to improved financial performance over the competition. LEED-certified buildings often command higher rental rates, with lease-up rates at 20% above market average. In addition, green building vacancy rates are 4% lower than their non-green counterparts.

“We’re incredibly proud to be a member of the USGBC, and fully-support the mission and message of this respected organization that is leading efforts towards a more sustainable future and creating healthier spaces for people ,” said Alchemco CEO Mario Baggio. “Thanks to their efforts, combined with their members’ commitment to environmentally-friendly products, green building has grown into a trillion-dollar industry. Alchemco is committed to innovating green products that support the construction of LEED-certified buildings, and honored to be a member.”

In addition to its LEED certification efforts, the USGBC’s advocacy goals include making sure taxpayer dollars are allocated to cost-efficient buildings that are healthier for people, providing elected officials with access to critical information on green building and resilient cities so they can make informed decisions for constituents, ensuring that building policies incentivize and encourage the use of LEED and other resources that create economic and environmental value, and leveraging external engagements to promote equity, climate and quality of life.

Leading Concrete Waterproofing Company Alchemco Launches Concentrated Version of Accelerating Agent with Environmental Impact in Mind New Concentrated Version Will Help Reduce Use of Plastic and Transportation Emissions

HENRICO, VA  – Alchemco, a world leader in innovative concrete waterproofing systems, is pleased to announce the availability of a more concentrated version of its ACR® Accelerating Agent. This newlydeveloped offering was motivated by the company’s desire to become even more environmentally friendly as it grows and expands into markets across the globe; with the new concentrate reducing its use of plastic pails by thousands annually, as well as reducing emissions because of a smaller transportation footprint.

Alchemco’s ACR® Accelerating Agent is an acetic-based solution designed to be used as part of the award winning TechCrete 2500 Waterproofing System, as well as the with its CretePro and BridgeDECK Waterproofing Systems. It decreases the time needed for the innovative waterproofing gel to form below the surface of the concrete. It also expedites the sealing and waterproofing of both existing and future cracks in the concrete slab, providing ‘decades long’ protection for exposed concrete structures.

“The development of this highly-concentrated version of our Accelerating Agent represents the next step inAlchemco’s quest to not only provide exceptional products, but to deliver them in a manner that is environmentally-responsible without compromising quality or performance,” said Alchemco CEO Mario Baggio. “This is a natural progression in our product development, and we’re proud to deliver on a concept that achieves the same effective results in a way that is friendlier to the environment.”

Alchemco continues to focus on its proprietary waterproofing formulas, originally developed over 45 years ago, to help position the company as a world leader in concrete waterproofing systems. By using its unique technology, promoting the use of ‘factory trained’ Certified Applicators, and providing industry-wide education, Alchemco products are able to help owners avoid many of the ongoing maintenance, and structural problems that t ypically affect reinforced concrete structures, such as corrosion, spalling and carbonation.

Compared to the use of competing product offerings by other manufacturers, Alchemco’s waterproofing systems help owners save on the amount of labor required to apply them (less expensive, and shorter down time) … save on the volume of materials needed to waterproof a structure (far fewer empty pails or drums to take to the landfill) … while protecting the concrete structure a significantly longer period of time (several decades).

Additional information about Alchemco and its wide array of high-quality products can be found online at https://www.alchemco.com.

LAZ Wins Contract to Operate City Trolley Service in Laguna Beach, CA

Reputation and strength in CA market cited in decision. Agreement is fifth Orange Co. trolley contract for LAZ

Hartford, CT,  August 5, 2021 – LAZ Parking announced today that it has been selected to operate the municipal trolley service of the City of Laguna Beach, CA. Under the agreement unanimously approved by the Laguna Beach City Council earlier this year, LAZ will operate 25 City-owned trolleys on a year-round basis, work that will require up to 100 drivers during the peak summer season. The contract runs for five years and comes with two three-year renewal options.

LAZ was deemed the most qualified of the three firms competing for the contract. LAZ already has a significant presence in Orange County, operating similar trolley services in Dana Point, Mission Viejo, Newport Beach, San Clemente, and San Juan Capistrano, CA.

“LAZ’s reputation and impact in the California market were key factors in the decision by the City to award us the contract,” said Alan Lazowski, founder and CEO of LAZ Parking. “This contract is an acknowledgment of our operations and management excellence in transportation services.  We are humbled by the trust the City has placed in us.”

The initial five-year contract calls for LAZ to provide drivers and dispatchers to staff the city trolley service. In partnership with the City, LAZ agreed to retain staff used by the City for trolley services and pay wages comparable to what City employees are currently earning. The City suspended trolley service at the outset of the pandemic but resumed service on June 25.

“The Transportation Division at LAZ has grown at a rapid pace in 2021, adding over 100 new shuttles and busses to its fleet of 540 vehicles since the beginning of the year, including the 25 trolleys we are operating for the City of Laguna Beach,” said Ralph Caldin, Vice President for Transportation Services at LAZ. “The Laguna Beach operation will also include a Micro Transit Program where residents will be able to request On Demand service for certain neighborhoods within the City.”

ALCHEMCO’S TECHCRETE 2500® WATERPROOFING AGENT EARN NOTICE OF APPROVAL FROM MIAMI-DADE COUNTY BUILDING DEPARTMENT

July 21, 2021

ALCHEMCO’S TECHCRETE 2500® WATERPROOFING AGENT EARN NOTICE OF APPROVAL FROM MIAMI-DADE COUNTY BUILDING DEPARTMENT

Richmond, VA – On May 13, 2021 Alchemco’s TechCrete 2500® Waterproofing Agent was granted a Notice of Approval from Miami-Dade County Building Department.

The Miami-Dade County’s Product Control Approval System is a renowned high standard testing that establishes an excellent protocol to assess building products. Further, the products are approved and designed to comply with the building code including the High Velocity Hurricane Zone which means that rigorous tests were carried out to determine the quality of the products before it can earn Notice of Approval.

As per Mario Baggio, CEO of Alchemco, “Receiving an NOA from Miami-Dade County Building Department is an achievement. They are known internationally for giving high standard processes and thorough assessments. It’s difficult to receive approval, that’s why we are very glad to be in partnership with Miami- Dade in providing prime services to our valued customers.” Alchemco is committed to provide a solution with a unique technology that has proven its waterproofing capabilities for over 40 years.

What makes Alchemco TechCrete 2500® Unique?

In early February of 2020, Alchemco’s TechCrete 2500® was voted as “Most Innovative Product during the World of Concrete Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. It marked one of the company’s achievements over the past 40 years of providing world-class service. What makes TechCrete 2500® different from other waterproofing products is its one-of-a-kind formula that penetrates below the surface of the concrete to create a continuous barrier against long-term water entry and enhances concrete durability. Alchemco’s TechCrete 2500® allows calcium silicate gel to form within the pores, cracks, and capillaries to continually reactivate barriers and seal future cracks for sustainable protection.

Moreover, TechCrete 2500® is easier and faster to apply than any traditional waterproofing products you can find in the market. It is designed to seal existing 2mm non-structural cracks watertight and seals future 0.4mm non-structural cracks. Thus, it is a cost-effective solution that protects the concrete through the highest level of performance.

TechCrete 2500® High-Class Performance Over 40 Years

Concretes have an impression to be the most durable and widely used construction material. Apparently, because of weather and traffic, concrete can deteriorate over time. However, Alchemco’s TechCrete 2500® is well-proven in delivering high-class performance around the globe throughout the years. It has been protecting a wide range of exposed concrete structures since 1975. Over the past 40 years, this product has been a great choice for clients who wants an affordable long-term solution to preserve, protect, and waterproof concrete.

About Alchemco

Alchemco is a full-line global manufacturer of products used to clean, repair, protect, and waterproof concrete & masonry structures. It became a world leader in concrete waterproofing systems through innovation, education, and professional implementation of its propriety waterproofing formula. (Wooster, OH) – Wooster Products’ NITEGLOW® Emergency Egress System, which includes high quality photoluminescent (glow in the dark) products to illuminate stair treads, handrails, door handles and door frames, and obstructions, so that occupants can evacuate safely in a darkened environment, will be featured in WOC Booth #N2964.  NITEGLOW® two-stage anti-slip stair nosing meets NYC Local Law 26, 2015 IBC, and 2015 IFC code compliance.  Photoluminescent abrasive provides a higher coefficient of friction (and more secure footing) than competitive products that include a photoluminescent strip without abrasive (which is the industry norm).  NITEGLOW® is well suited for either new construction or retrofit code compliance upgrades.  Heat treated corrosion resistant aluminum substrate and a nearly diamond-hard aluminum oxide filler assures long tread life under heavy pedestrian traffic.  Bright, long lasting photoluminescent epoxy filler is free of hazardous and radioactive substances, extends uniformly throughout the filler.  A high content of aluminum oxide abrasive provides traction and long service life and is replaceable.  NITEGLOW® is easily cleaned with common commercial cleaners such as Simple Green and Fantastik.  Clean architectural lines ensure aesthetic appeal.

Available in lengths to order, to a maximum of 8’0”.   NITEGLOW® two-stage safety nosing includes a replaceable anti-slip abrasive-filled top insert, and a mill finish extruded aluminum base, with sure-hold anchor.  Optional wood insert keeps aluminum base clean during initial construction.   Protective tape also available.

Anti-slip filler includes approximately 60% virgin grain aluminum oxide abrasive which is available in contrasting colors.  Photoluminescent epoxy binder is a fully cured resilient epoxy with a filler ratio of 16% minimum for enhanced cleanability.

Photoluminescent technology is also available with other Wooster Products offerings, including Flex-Tred® anti-slip tape products, for use on handrails, door handles and frames, and around obstructions to comply with the code.  Visitwww.WoosterProducts.com for more information.
