Phoenix Motorcars Delivers All-Electric, Zero-Emission Shuttle Bus to Tennessee Tech University

Anaheim, California (April 12, 2023) – Phoenix Motorcars is proud to announce their recent delivery of an all-electric, zero-emission Z400 shuttle bus to UCHRA in partnership with Tennessee Technological University. The shuttle was built on a Ford E-450 chassis powered by Phoenix Motorcars and will serve the campus. This electric vehicle was funded in part by Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Vehicle Technologies Office. It is owned by Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency (UCHRA) and is the first all-electric vehicle to be operated outside of an urban area.

The project was headed by a team of dedicated faculty and graduate students led by Pingen Chen, Ph.D., associate professor of mechanical engineering at Tech. “We are proud to have the very first electric shuttle bus anywhere outside of a major Tennessee city. Working with UCHRA, we fought through a lot of challenges and, in the end, showed our persistence and resiliency in making it happen,” said Chen.

UCHRA and Tennessee Tech plan to use the electric shuttle for a variety of uses, including providing on-campus transportation for Tech students, faculty and guests over the coming weeks before eventually transitioning the vehicle for use throughout Cookeville. Chen and UCHRA say that, in addition to being more environmentally friendly, riders can expect a quieter travel experience on the electric shuttle bus compared to gas-powered vehicles. The electric shuttle is also projected to have a lower total cost of ownership, which includes not only the up-front purchase cost but also operational and maintenance costs.

The Phoenix Z400 shuttle is equipped with a 125-kWh battery pack offering up to 130-mile range and can be fully charged in approximately two to three hours with a 50-kW Level III charger. The Z400 shuttles, as compared to its equivalent fossil fueled alternatives, will reduce atmospheric emissions by ~61 tons per vehicle annually, reduce maintenance costs by 75% and fuel costs by 80%.

Phoenix has been the leader in medium duty electrification for over a decade. With 4 million all-electric miles driven on their zero emission drive systems, Phoenix has unparalleled experience and expertise helping public and private fleets successfully deploy and adopt electric vehicles into their fleets, cleaning the air quality and providing clean, quiet and safe zero emission transportation and mobility for their companies and communities.

“Phoenix Motorcars is thrilled to have partnered with Tennessee Tech, UCHRA, Creative Bus Sales, and TDOT to bring the 1st All-Electric Zero Emission Shuttle Bus to rural Tennessee. We are so very excited to be a part of this project and bring our zero-emission technology to life in such a beautiful part of the country. We hope this collaboration sparks a new trend for green transportation in Tennessee and look forward to continuing our support of this project and our partners.” Says Thomas Allen, Vice President of Sales at Phoenix Motorcars.

Phoenix Motorcars Delivers ZEV Trucks to City of Salinas

February 07, 2023

Phoenix Motorcars Delivers ZEV Trucks
to City of Salinas

Anaheim, California (February 3, 2023) – Phoenix Motorcars is proud to announce their recent deployment of 3, All-Electric, Zero-Emission Z500 trucks to the City of Salinas. The project included 1 x Zero Emission flatbed truck, and 2 x Zero Emission cargo trucks, as well as 3 x Level III charging stations.

The three trucks are built on the Ford E-450 chassis powered by Phoenix Motorcars and will serve the City of Salinas in their fleet department. The all-electric zero emission trucks were funded in part by the Monterey Bay Air Resources District (MBARD) Clean Air Management Program and the Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP) program.

According to Richard Stedman, MBARD’s Air Pollution Control Officer, “Over 60% of the total emission of smog forming compounds in our region comes from motor vehicles with the largest portion coming from medium to heavy duty diesel trucks and buses. By partnering with the City of Salinas to purchase three medium duty electric trucks, we’re taking another step toward improving air quality in our community.”

The Phoenix Z500 trucks are equipped with a 94-kWh battery pack offering up to 110-mile range and can be fully charged in approximately two to three hours with a 50-kW Level III charger. The Z500 trucks, as compared to its equivalent fossil fueled alternatives, will reduce atmospheric emissions by ~61 tons per vehicle annually, reduce maintenance costs by 75% and fuel costs by 80%.

“Agriculture is the foundation of our local economy, so the air quality and climate in our community matter,” said Salinas Mayor Kimbley Craig. “Replacing three large fleet vehicles helps protect our environment and also significantly reduces operational and maintenance costs. Climate resiliency and environmental sustainability are part of the core values of our Council and improve the quality of life for our residents.”

“Phoenix Motorcars is proud of our commitment to sustainable vehicle technology, and our project to bring the first zero emission trucks to the City of Salinas” says Thomas Allen, Vice President of Sales for Phoenix Motorcars. “We’ve been an avid supporter of both the state HVIP program and MBARD’s efforts to help clean the air quality in Monterey County, and this project is a huge success for both the City of Salinas’ fleet, and their community members who breathe the air of the beautiful central coast. Zero emission transportation and mobility is an integral part of building a sustainable future and it’s great to see the City of Salinas being an early adopter. Operating the Z500 all-electric trucks from Phoenix will provide significant emission savings and cost saving opportunities to Salinas and their community.”

CALACT Enables Easy Purchase of Phoenix Motorcars’ Zero Emission Shuttle Buses

October 02, 2020

CALACT Enables Easy Purchase of Phoenix Motorcars’ Zero Emission Shuttle Buses

Ontario, CA. – Phoenix Motorcars’ ZEUS Zero Emission Shuttles was selected as an eligible vehicle by the Morongo Basin Transit Authority (“MBTA”) and California Association for Coordinated Transportation (“CALACT”) purchasing cooperative. Selected following a detailed evaluation, audits and manufacturing facility evaluation, this is testimony to the quality and technology focus at Phoenix Motorcars.

Transit agencies who are members of CALACT can now purchase the ZEUS all-electric shuttle bus through a federal and California State compliant purchasing solution, avoiding lengthy & expensive RFPs and bid processes. This also enables transit agencies to select vehicles of their choice rather than having to piggyback on other state or agency procurements. Other public agencies and non-profits can also purchase the ZEUS all-electric shuttles buses through the cooperative.

Starcraft Bus, the largest selling shuttle bus manufacturer in North America, Creative Bus Sales – the nation’s largest bus dealer and Phoenix Motorcars, the leading manufacturer of all-electric shuttle buses & trucks have come together to build and distribute the competitive range of electric shuttle buses that are Buy America and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant.

“Phoenix is proud to be selected by CALACT to supply electric shuttles to members of the purchasing cooperative. We’re working closely with a number of transit agencies looking to acquire our shuttles and the CALACT contract makes it a lot simpler. Together with Starcraft and Creative, Phoenix is well positioned to meet the growing demand for electric transportation in California” says Tarek Helou, COO at Phoenix Motorcars.

The ZEUS all-electric shuttle bus is powered by Phoenix’s third generation drivetrain, offering multiple pack sizes and range up to 160 miles. Built with the Starcraft Allstar body, the shuttles offer multiple seating layouts, including ADA options, fulfilling the needs of paratransit, dial-a-ride and first/last mile services.

Transit agencies in California are mandated by the Innovative Clean Transportation (ICT) Regulation to transition to all-electric buses. The addition of electric shuttle buses to the CALACT purchasing cooperative simplifies the switch to zero-emission alternatives.

Phoenix Motorcars wins grant with Houston Metro and EasyMile for development of first FMVSS compliant autonomous shuttle bus in the US

Ontario, CA. – Kickstarting the autonomous bus revolution in the US, the city of Houston is set to receive the first Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Buy America-compliant mid-size autonomous bus in the US.

Jointly developed by Phoenix Motorcars and EasyMile, the self-driving bus will be deployed in real-life traffic conditions and is set to revolutionize last-mile transit connectivity. Furthering its success in powering traditional medium duty shuttles and trucks with its cutting-edge electric drivetrain technology, Phoenix Motorcars will integrate EasyMile’s driverless technology to its range of zero emission vehicles.

The news comes as part of Houston Metro being selected among projects to receive funding from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Accelerating Innovative Mobility (AIM) grant of nearly $1.5 million. It will develop an autonomous vehicle technology prototype for private or public roads at 12-15 mph in 12 months from launch date, with further operation for 12 months of testing.

The autonomous bus will serve Texas Southern University, the University of Houston, and Houston’s Third Ward community connecting to Metro buses and light rail.

“We are proud to be selected by the FTA as the OEM zero-emission vehicle provider and look forward to adding the Level 4 Autonomous EZ ZEUS into our product catalog. As the world moves toward net zero carbon goals and prioritizes clean air quality, the self-driving ZEV is the next step in Phoenix Motorcars’ quest to provide future technology today.” says Thomas Allen, Sales Manager at Phoenix Motorcars.

Phoenix Motorcars and Easy Mile will develop this Class 4 Medium-Duty Zero-Emission Shuttle Bus with Level 4 Autonomy that aims to:

  • Introduce autonomy in a variety of bus depot use cases and, ultimately, deploy on public roads;
  • Provide invaluable initial feedback in the development of this industry;
  • Leverage prior experience in launching EasyMile’s driverless technology
  • Provide integration with Phoenix Motorcars’ industry-leading and proven Class 4 zero-emission drive system
  • Support existing agency initiatives around improved safety and energy efficiency via innovative technologies; and
  • As the inaugural class of AIM incubators, provide industry leadership in sharing project outcomes with the public transportation community.

PHOENIX MOTORCARS DEPLOYS ELECTRIC CARGO TRUCK TO SERVICE
FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS IN SACRAMENTO

Ontario, CA. – Phoenix Motorcars, a leading manufacturer of medium duty all-electric buses and trucks delivered its first ZEUS 500 Electric Cargo Truck to C&V Contractors, a family owned contracting business based out of Sacramento, California. Funded through the Sacramento Emergency Clean Air & Transportation Grant Program (SECAT), the zero emission box truck deployment highlights the appetite amongst fleets in California to choose cleaner, sustainable transportation options. C&V Contractors, which specializes in custom home building, remodels and maintenance and repairs has been in business and servicing the Sacramento area since 1989.

Built on the popular Ford E-450 chassis with a Rockport Commercial Trucks body, the zero emission box truck is equipped with custom shelving to suit the specific needs of the customer.  The truck is equipped with a 105 kWh battery pack offering up to 110 mile range and can be charged up in about 3 hrs with a 50 kW Level III charger.

“C&V Contractors was the first zero emission truck replacement project approved by the Sac Metro Air District under the new Sacramento Emergency Clean Air Transportation (SECAT) guidelines. We are proud to help a local small business use the cleanest vehicle possible in our community.” Says Kristian Damkier, Assoc. Air Quality Engineer at Sac Metro Air District.

The guidelines provide funding for vehicles with advanced technology and this included the line of Phoenix Motorcars all electric zero emission vehicles. C&V’s brand new ZEUS 500 Electric Cargo Truck will reduce atmospheric emissions by ~61 tons annually, reduce maintenance costs by 75% and fuel costs by 80%.

“Collaborating with C&V Contractors has been exciting for us and the deployment is testimony to how fleets, irrespective of size, are recognizing the environmental and cost benefits of going electric. Along with our all-electric shuttle buses our range of electric trucks including flatbeds, utility trucks, box trucks and service trucks are proving to be very popular amongst progressive fleets across the nation.”, said Jose Paul Plackal, Vice President Business Development at Phoenix Motorcars.

“I absolutely love how spacious it really is inside!  It drives really smooth.” – Vicky Hagood, Owner C&V Contractors.
