PIE 2023: The Park Tank is Looking for Participants!

Welcome to the Park Tank!

Do you have an innovative product or service that will revolutionize the parking industry?

This is your chance to pitch a panel of parking experts at PIE 2023.

Up to 10 start-up vendors will be invited to present their parking/mobility solutions to PIE attendees and a team of parking experts.

Will you be able to entice the parking experts to turn their chairs? This mash-up of several popular television programs will provide each selected vendor with 4 minutes to pitch their solution.  The experts and live audience will only hear the pitch (no slide decks). Each parking expert will have the chance to turn their chair if they like what they hear.

The vendors are vying for a 6-month mentorship with a parking expert along with the opportunity to showcase their parking solution to the PIE audience.

If you are interested in being considered for this unique opportunity, please send an email to ParkTank@dixonresourcesunlimited.com with your contact information.

Submissions must be received by March 10th for consideration. Participation is not guaranteed and those selected must comply with the conference/session guidelines. Presentations will be in person on March 28th. There will be no compensation for travel or conference expenses.

If you have any questions, please email ParkTank@dixonresourcesunlimited.com.

The Parking Industry Expo and the Big Ten and Friends Parking and Transportation Conference, Announce Joint Event

The Parking Industry Expo and the Big Ten and Friends Parking and Transportation Conference are excited to announce that their joint 2023 conference events will be held on March 28-30 at the Schaumberg Convention Center, PIE Director Marcy Sparrow announced today.

The Big Ten and Friends will host 80 plus university parking, transit, and fleet leaders, who will be participating in the PIE seminars and exhibit hall along with university-specific programming.  A highlight will be a panel session featuring university transportation experts on Thursday, March 30. During this interactive session, the experts will share their stories and answer questions from attendees.

Big Ten and Friends Parking and Transportation Conference representative Ross Allanson, CAPP, CPP, Director of Parking & Transportation Services at the University of Minnesota, said that he was pleased that the two organizations could come together after they paused their Big Ten conference while the country responded to COVID-19.  Centrally located, Schaumburg, Illinois is an ideal location for a conference that brings together universities and colleges from across the nation.

The Parking Industry Expo is sponsored annually by Parking Today Magazine. In 2023, it will be held at the Schaumburg Convention Center adjacent to the Schaumburg Renaissance Hotel, a short 20-minute ride north of Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. The dates are March 28-30. For full information, log on to pieshow.parkingtoday.com

I hope you dance: Thank you for attending and participating in PIE 2022 in Reno, NV  (PICS)

I hope you dance: Thank you for attending and participating in PIE 2022 in Reno, NV  (pics)

After coming down to earth from PIE 2022 and Reno, NV, Lee Ann Womack’s, I Hope You Dance is playing in my head. And I “blame” it all on amazing Marcy Sparrow.  Who captain a truly sincere, fun and engaging PIE show, despite all the challenges that we all have been facing.

“I hope you never lose your sense of wonder,
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger,
May you never take one single breath for granted,
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed,
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

I hope you dance… I hope you dance…”

We plan the location of our PIE conference 3 years ahead.  3 years ago, it was a very different world.  It was even different just a several months ago, when we first met for PIE 2022 in Dallas, then the NPA in Las Vegas and the IPMI conference in Tampa.  I believe most of us who thought we are double or then triple vaccinated, are immune to covid.  And  the inflation as we have today, with the gas prices as they are, was unimaginable.  Back then flight were inexpensive.  And plentiful even to Reno, NV.  Today, the world is a tad upside down.  Yet, we must have faith and hope and move forward.

Victor E, Frankl in his life changing Man’s Search for Meaning said: “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

Thus, with lead of our captain Marcy Sparrow, we have decided to make PIE 2022 a joy fest with genuine interactions, celebrations, new perspectives and simple joy.  Albeit it was challenging to get to Reno.  Despite our JVH for first time due to Covid, not being able to be with us in person, just as many of you, this PIE to me was most special.

I met some incredible people and got closer to people I knew.  I attended some fantastic presentations and danced my behind off, at the greatest party sponsored by Duncan and organized by Marcy.

Thank you with all of my heart to all of our sponsors.  Thank you to all of you who gave us your most precious time to be with us in Reno.  Next year, we will be a direct flight away as in Chicago, and we can’t see you there.

We have lots of photos from PIE 2022 that you will be able to see soon.  In the meantime, here are a few of my snapshots.

“I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance,
Never settle for the path of least resistance,
Livin’ might mean takin’ chances, but they’re worth takin’,
Lovin’ might be a mistake, but it’s worth makin’,
Don’t let some Hell bent heart leave you bitter,
When you come close to sellin’ out reconsider,
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.
I hope you dance… I hope you dance. …”

Lets keep on on dancing!  You all are amazing and you make this awesome parking industry strong and innovative.  God bless you all.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Astrid Ambroziak

PIE 2022 and June 2022 Parking Today, the Airport Issue: ParkNews.biz April 5th-11th, 2022!

April 11, 2022

PIE 2022 and June 2022 Parking Today, the Airport Issue: ParkNews.biz April 5th-11th, 2022!

PIE 2022 is only a bit over a month away.  We are truly excited to see you in Reno May 15th-18th, 2022!  If you haven’t registered yet, please do so here: https://pieshow.parkingtoday.com/attendee_rates.cfm

Don’t miss hearing and meeting our speakers.

This year, we are thrilled to have Cindy Campbell from IPMI as our key note speaker.  Cindy is the Brene Brown of our parking industry.  A time spent with her, will make you see yourself and others in a different light.  And you will gain myriad new tools to help you communicate and work with others.

We are also looking forward to the presentation from Eugene Tsyklevich, Parkopedia and a Panel of EV Suppliers including Drew Starke, Blink Charging and Paul Young, JuiceBar.

Another great session is about technology if it is too much or not.  I will have a privilege to moderate this discussion between Brandy Stanley, City of Las Vegas and Michelle Horton, University of Nevada Reno.

Some other presenters are Dale Denda, Clyde Wilson, Laura Caillot, Barbara Chance, Roamy Valera, Julie Dixon, Mark Frumar and others.  We trust that there is a seminar of interest for everyone. Please, see the schedule here: https://pieshow.parkingtoday.com/sessions_daily.cfm

We are also working currently on the June 2022 Parking Today, the Airport Issue.  Parking technology that helps make parking experience non eventful is the star of this issue.  Its first and last impressions that make our travel pleasant.  It all starts and ends with parking, especially since for most of us, the days of taking Uber are over.  More and more airport travelers park be it at the airports or the parking facilities nearby.

If you have an article about airport parking and would like to share it with our readers, please send it to me by April 18th.

And please, contact Brian Bullen, brian@parkingtoday.com by April 15th, to create your advertisement to showcase your brand.

In the meantime, have a wonderful new week, and blessed Easter and Passover.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Astrid Ambroziak

“Stuff” or “the places we didn’t go” – Super Bowl and ParkNews.biz Feb 8th – 14th, 2022

February 14, 2022

“Stuff” or “the places we didn’t go” – Super Bowl and ParkNews.biz Feb 8th – 14th, 2022

“Remember… the Force will be with you. Always.” -Obi-Wan Kenobi

“You’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting,
So… get on your way!”
― Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

This Sunday Feb 13th, there was joy back in town as the city of Los Angeles.  LA Rams played in and won the Super Bowl LVI, here in Inglewood, CA at the spectacular Sofi Stadium, where 70,048 spectators, including hundreds of unmasked celebrities, were cheering, nail biting, laughing, eating and drinking and over all ,enjoying themselves on the chamber of commerce postcard, perfect weather day.

One of the best part of the Super Bowl telecasts, are always the commercials and the half time show.  The later, in my opinion was one of the best I have ever seen due to its simplicity and sincerity.  It was not the over the top Las Vegas spectacle, but hip hop concert honoring its roots of Campton.  Snoop Dog?  He is a legend and I could smell his presence 15 miles away.  Dr. Dre?  Made me think I should finally get my seat of beats.  And surprise appearance of 50 cents and his Dre produced “In da Club” made me hum “Go, shorty, It’s your birthday …” And Eminem and his “Loose Yourself” rocked!  I am thankful that missed the line from Dre about still not loving police and Eminem’s knee and what it meant to him.  Maybe he was praying?  Yet, we all can have an opinion and not get cancelled for it hopefully.

Then the former, the commercials: I don’t understand bitcoin so the floating QR code made me think my tv  on my internet were broken.  However, I enjoyed other commercials, especially the Alexa Read my Mind spot staring Starring real-life husband and wife Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost.  The commercial’s irony, especially with the dinner party and the oysters, were fun.  One commercial, in particular, made me feel inspired and motivated.  It was the Expedia ad with Ewan McGregor.  Star Wars’ star starts with “We love stuff, and there is really some great stuff out there.  But I doubt if any of us look back at our lives and think, I wish I had gotten a little sportier looking SUV, or even a thinner tv, or found the trendiest scent … Do you think any of us look back at our lives and regret the things we didn’t buy? Or the places we didn’t go!”

Thus, in the words of Dr. Seuss, “Get on your way!  Your mountain is waiting.”

We have PIE 2022 just around the corner: Discover Reno and its beautiful surrounding areas including Lake Tahoe and Virginia City.  Most of all, meet your colleagues, make new friends and new deals.   Ask questions so you are not expected to read others’ minds like Amazon Alexa and learn and have fun.  Don’t regret the places you haven’t gone to.

It is the going that is more important than ever now.  It is the celebration, irony, togetherness and laughter.  John wrote a blog about the importance of awards.  Read more here: Feb 14, 2022 – Super Bowl: Awards are Important – JVH, Parking Today

And participate in this celebration, be it via nominating yourself or your colleagues or sponsorship of one of the categories.  Please, contact Marcy Sparrow at marcy@parkingtoday.com for more information.

And reach out to Brian Bullen, who has travelled the world, at brian@parkingtoday.com, to promote your company, your products and your presence at PIE 2022 via our PT magazine.

Let’s Go Parking Industry and Let’s Go America!  As this weekend Super Bowl has shown us, we are all ready to move forward!

Thank you.

Have a blessed weekend.

Pecan, Apple, Pumpkin, Privacy  … and PIE 2022 – ParkNews.biz Nov 9th – 15th, 2021

‘Tis the time of the year to bake a pie.  The Parking Industry Expo one and the various flavors we bake or order or buy for the most beautiful Holiday of the Year, that is Thanksgiving.

Is your preference a store bought or yourself made one?  There are pluses and minuses with both. The former, less time in the kitchen can be spend on other things and especially on being fully engaged with others.  The latter, nothing shows love and appreciation as something we make from the scratch.  Be it a pie, a dish or creating something wonderful that benefits others even in the smallest way.   Another plus with baking your own pie, there is joy in work for the sake of work itself.  As when we go the extra mile, this work gives us happiness beyond measure.

Think Michelangelo Buonarroti and his David, his Sistine Chapel ceiling, Bacchus, the Last Judgment, Pieta and so much more including Michelangelo becoming the architect of St. Peter’s Basilica at age of 74 and work on it till his last days.  He passed less than a month short of his 90th birthday Feb 18th, 1564.  Michelangelo truly worked for the sake of work.  For the glory of creating something that outlasts us.  He didn’t do anything half way.  He didn’t produce half baked pie.  It was all or nothing.   All, as with all of his heart, mind, soul and body.  Complacency was not in his MO.

Therefore, in our gratitude for you as the people who put their everything to creating the best parking experience for our customers, and the best parking industry for all of us involved, we are determined to make PIE 2022 the most productive and beneficial conference yet.  Everyone one of us and the parking industry has been going through myriad challenges due to the pandemic and beyond.  How can we turn the poison to medicine and create better products and practical solutions.  This is our goal and determination.  This Monday, our Website for PIE is up and running.  Marcy is working non stop be of service to every exhibitor and every attendee.  We see you and we hear you.   Go to PIE website here and secure your exhibiting space or your attendance at the lower early bird special price.  #PIExpo

Last but no least, there is no PIE without you and our Parking Today Magazine.  This January issue focusses on environment and parking industry truly caring about climate and sustainability.  We have some engaging articles coming in and Brian Bullen, who not only provides the best service, can do some magic with you to showcase your company, your mission and your brand.  The space is due immediately but he is willing to work with you till the end of this week.  Please, reach out to Brian at Brian@parkingtoday.com.

Privacy flavor: Please read JVH’s latest blog here – Nov 15, 2021 – Dog Bites Man Story — Parking at Trader Joe’s – JVH, Parking Today  – more to come in the near future apropos of this subject.  The quagmire is: it is your information thus, shouldn’t it be protected?

In the meantime, I pray you are enjoying this miraculous season of Thanksgiving and just like us, putting your heart into baking your pies, actual ones or proverbial, at work and in your daily life.  We appreciate you, respect you and celebrate you.  We can’t wait to see you in Parking Today Magazine each month and then in May 2022 in Reno for PIE 2022.

Thank you.

Have a blessed week!

Sincerely,

Astrid Ambroziak

The Forgotten Big Brother

May 31, 2019

By: Madison Latorre and Shaun Howard

Intro: The following article was written by two people who are employed by the Federal Government. After attending PIE 2019, they were able to put their thoughts on paper and present it here. Obviously, they have a great understanding of the issues we deal with daily, including the need for charging for parking and the use of technology to better assist parkers in their quest for a parking space.

The Forgotten Big Brother

On a warm May day, President George Washington worked to develop the Federal Government, in 1789. Little did President Washington know, that while developing the government, he would have to consider parking to be a major issue.

Fast-forward to 2019, where two eager millennials sit and wait impatiently to make parking no longer the topic of fury. Their parking quest leads them to conferences and expos, but are still falling short of their mission to make parking no longer a problem.  But with all this technology and ability, why is parking such an issue for them?

The answer: The Federal Government shies away from parking technology and most agencies offer parking free of charge. Not implementing the ability to charge for parking at some level causes the government to miss out on beneficial revenues that could assist in improving outdated parking technologies. Implementing paid parking could actually reduce the carbon footprint by pushing employee to utilize mass transportation.  Many government agencies offer a subsidy for utilizing mass transportation.

Parking Technology

While the government focusses on furthering their technology within other fields, our parking technology is nonexistent. The goal of the two eager millennials is to rid the mindset of those (ahem) older employees and bring the latest and greatest to their parking lots. These technologies may not solve our problems completely but would certainly be a step in the right direction. Our workforce would be much more satisfied with wayfinding technology within the surface lots, rather than spending 45 minutes “sharking” spaces.

Final Note

The Federal Government parks millions of cars daily. Having a goal to make parking easier and more convenient, for its employees, could make coming to work a better experience for all. Charging for parking and using technology would be certainly be a significant step in the right direction.
