SpotHero Announces $50 Million Series D Funding Led by Macquarie Capital

SpotHero Announces $50 Million Series D Funding Led by Macquarie Capital

CHICAGO — SpotHero, the digital parking leader, today announced $50 million in Series D funding led by Macquarie Capital, bringing SpotHero’s total funding to date to $118 million. Union Grove Venture Partners participated in the round, along with existing investors including Insight Venture Partners, Global Founders Capital, OCA Ventures, AutoTech Ventures and others. The new capital will be used to accelerate marketplace growth, expand the digital platform for the parking industry, strengthen partnerships with leading mobility companies, and deepen SpotHero’s technology stack to standardize and optimize access to parking throughout North America.

SpotHero is driving the digital transformation of the $20B off-street parking industry with hardware and software solutions aimed at drivers, parking operators and property owners, and mobility partners. The company offers the largest place to buy and sell parking in North America and has helped digitize nearly 7,000 parking facilities in the US and Canada. SpotHero’s consumer products help millions of drivers find, book and access parking, while the SpotHero developer platform and API powers parking at scale for fleets, connected cars, and urban mobility apps.

In the first half of 2019, SpotHero:

  • Reached half a billion dollars in all-time sales, the majority transacted within the past year. The company is now on pace to reach $1 billion all-time transactions within the next year;
  • Assembled a team of executives from Uber, Expedia, Groupon and Cars.com, and is planning to double product and engineering headcount to more than 100 in the next year;
  • Announced SpotHero for Fleets, an industry-first parking-as-a-service solution designed to support the car sharing economy and help accelerate the mobility industry’s eventual transition to autonomous vehicles;
  • Hit 900-plus distribution partnerships and integrations including everything from Google Assistant, for voice-enabled parking; Waze, for seamless in-app navigation to parking; Hertz and car2go for fleet parking; WeWork, for commuter parking; and Moovit, for multi-modal parking;
  • Rolled out SpotHero for Business to over 600 corporate travel and enterprise clients.

At the intersection of infrastructure, real estate and technology, parking remains an industry in transition. It is being redefined by three of the biggest trends affecting cities today: mobility, congestion, and sustainability. By 2050, 68% of the world’s population is projected to live in cities, where aging infrastructure is already being pushed to the brink. In response, policymakers are experimenting with immediate solutions to reduce traffic, including congestion pricing and curb redesign, designating dedicated curb space for multi-modal use such as bike lanes or pick up and drop off zones. This transformation of the curb is reducing the availability of on-street parking and beginning to push more drivers to off-street facilities. To accelerate and streamline this transition, SpotHero is bringing underutilized and often invisible parking spaces online, reducing the need to build even more new parking structures in crowded cities.

“By standardizing the way parking is bought and sold, we are introducing the same visibility into parking inventory that people expect from the airline or hospitality industries,” said Mark Lawrence, CEO and co-founder, SpotHero. “That’s a big win for drivers, but there’s still a lot of work to be done to modernize parking. Together with our network of more than 1,000 operator and platform partners, and our new and existing investors, we look forward to bringing this next phase of industry growth to life.”

“SpotHero is in position to transform the entire parking industry and has built a foundation to support the future of mobility for a long time to come, including the movement towards shared use and EV fleets,” said Lucas Joynt, Senior Vice President, Macquarie Capital. “SpotHero’s leadership position makes the company an attractive investment for Macquarie Capital as we continue to drive innovation at the intersection of infrastructure, real estate and technology. We look forward to supporting SpotHero as it scales to its next phase of growth.”

SpotHero Partners with TIBA to Release First-Ever Visualizations of Integrated Online & Drive-Up Parking Data

Integrations and shared data power inventory, pricing and access solutions to improve occupancy rates and drive more revenue for parking operators

CHICAGO, I.L. (June 6, 2019) – SpotHero, the #1 consumer marketplace and mobility platform for off-street parking in North America, and TIBA, the industry innovator in parking management software and hardware solutions for centralized parking operations, today announced a strategic partnership to power a 360-degree view of online and offline parking demand data, advanced yield management capabilities, and frictionless redemption for a better parking customer experience.

This long-term partnership introduces a standardized process for implementing online reservations and joint product yield management via TIBA’s powerful parking API, SmartConnect, SpotHero’s parking mobility platform and SpotHero’s network of high-demand off-street facilities across 300 markets in the U.S. and Canada.

SpotHero and TIBA will leverage TIBA’s Bluetooth technology, ParkBlue, to power easy one-tap redemption, eliminating the need for drivers to roll down their windows to present an access credential. The advanced access capability, coupled with yield management and 360 degree insights, lays the foundation for operators to process drive-up payments for drivers today, and seamless access and payments for fleets and autonomous vehicles in the near future, as the urban mobility ecosystem continues toevolve.

“TIBA is a proven leader in parking management solutions that provide operators with the data and technology needed to make smarter decisions about how to price and manage their inventory,”says MarkLawrence, CEO and Co-founder of SpotHero. “We’re very excited to marry SpotHero’s real-time search and demand data – three to four times larger than that of any other online reservations platform – with TIBA’s data to create a 360-degree view of demand and actionable insights for operators to drive more revenue. The way we see it, making it possible for customers and vehicles to easily find, reserve, pay for, and redeem parking is key to securing parking’s rightful place at the center of the urban mobility ecosystem. It’s clear that TIBA shares this vision. That’s why we’re putting our platforms to work – together.”

“By joining forces, TIBA and SpotHero can deliver a 360 degree view of data for occupancy, duration of stay, and online demand so that operators can maintain ideal capacity and increase revenue,” says Levi Rinkoff, Executive Vice President at TIBA. “TIBA’s innovative solutions let parking operators keep pace with the latest trends in centralized operations, automated smart facilities, online reservations, and mobile payments. The outcome of this partnership is a parking operator platform for combined online and drive-up data, smarter yield management, and a better process for supporting and redeeming digital passes. We’re laying the groundwork for facilitating payments, access, and redemption for all types of vehicles that need to park.”

SpotHero and TIBA are currently piloting platform integrations and have plans to expand into more North American markets later this year. Pilot facilities are equipped with online reservations, yield management data integrations, and BLE redemption. Due to the digital infrastructure in place, these locations are prepared for challenges around payments, access, and redemption for fleets, autonomous vehicles, and other emerging methods of urban mobility.

To learn more about this partnership, visit the SpotHero (#410) and TIBA (#841) booths at the IPMI Conference & Expo 2019  on June 9-12 in Anaheim, California.

SpotHero Expands in Canada; Partners with Toronto Pearson International Airport to Alleviate Growing Local Congestion

SpotHero Expands in Canada; Partners with Toronto Pearson International Airport to Alleviate Growing Local Congestion

New partnership offers Pearson’s nearly 50 million yearly passengers and regional commuters the simplest way to reserve and pay for daily, weekly and long-term parking facilities via SpotHero

TORONTO, CANADA — SpotHero, the #1 consumer marketplace and mobility platform for off-street parking in North America, today announced further expansion into Toronto, Canada, with the appointment of General Manager Patrick Szwec, who will oversee Canadian operations and work with parking operators to drive revenue and enhance their customer experience. The company also launched a new partnership with Toronto Pearson International Airport, North America’s “Best Large Airport” as voted by passengers for two consecutive years.

Multiple studies have suggested that 30-45% of urban traffic can be attributed to cars circling the block in search of a place to park, adding to congestion. By giving drivers the tools to easily find and book a space in advance, SpotHero not only offers a more convenient and efficient way to park, but gets more cars off the roads faster. Services of this type are critical for the area around Pearson, the second-largest employment zone in all of Canada, wherein 300,000 people are employed and nearly 1 million car trips a day take place. And with regard to Toronto’s downtown core, the city is known as one of the most congestedin the world, with the metro area losing as much as $6 billion in productivity annually—a figure which is projected to grow to $15 billion by 2031. More than 1.5 million Torontonians commute to the city by car every day, making it an ideal market for SpotHero to expand its Canadian footprint.

Beginning today, Pearson travelers and Toronto drivers can use SpotHero’s mobile app, the Parking Panda app, or visit spothero.com to book convenient on-site daily parking at Terminals 1 and 3, the Value Park Garage, the Value Park Lot, private airport-adjacent facilities, and more than 65 parking garages and lots in downtown Toronto to save time and money, reduce stress, and make travel more enjoyable.

“Toronto is booming, and with it, so is congestion. The region’s population is expected to double by 2050, threatening to stall traffic and make it even harder to move around,” said Mark Lawrence, CEO and co-founder, SpotHero. “Public and private sectors alike have a responsibility to act now to implement solutions that create better outcomes for all stakeholders who live, work and visit the region. We commend Pearson for being one of the first global airports to optimize their experience for customers who depend on, and expect, mobile apps to manage every aspect of their travel itinerary, including on-airport parking options. As we look to develop additional partnerships and uncover new opportunities to drive growth, having Patrick to manage the Canadian market will put SpotHero in a powerful position to maximize our impact.”

“Toronto Pearson is focused on creating the most seamless door-to-door experience possible for our passengers by providing easy and convenient transportation options at every price point. Enabling hassle-free airport parking is a critical component of that,” said Scott Collier, Vice President, Customer and Terminal Services, Toronto Pearson. “Partnering with SpotHero allows us to offer our customers the best-in-class experience they’ve come to expect from Pearson, while giving us a new channel to drive new customer acquisition, retention and additional revenue.”

SpotHero partners with parking operators and facilities adjacent to more than 50 airports in North America to provide convenient and affordable parking options to travelers who expect mobile reservations and mobile payments enabled for every leg of their journey. In 2018, drivers used SpotHero to reserve airport-adjacent parking 2X more than the previous year. To learn more, visit SpotHero.com and TorontoPearson.com.

SpotHero Partners with Software Provider Oobeo to Simplify Valet Parking Operations Nationwide

SpotHero to expand network of parking facilities and improve user experience for drivers; Oobeo to acquire SpotHero’s ticketless valet clients to expand its client base

CHICAGO and SARASOTA, FL, February 21, 2019 — SpotHero, the leading parking mobility platform in North America, and Oobeo, a cloud-based valet parking software provider, have announced a partnership to improve valet parking for both companies’ customers nationwide. Under the partnership, Oobeo will assume and service SpotHero’s ticketless valet software clients, and SpotHero will gain access to hundreds of additional valet parking locations near restaurants, airports, and hotels currently using Oobeo’s solution.

Through the partnership, Oobeo will expand their cloud-based valet software to SpotHero’s ticketless valet clients. By operating entirely on iOS and Android devices, Oobeo provides valet operators with an integrated platform to receive cars, check the status of vehicles, take credit card payments, and review customer payment status. Eliminating paper tickets enables drivers to pay for valet parking, drop off the car, and request their vehicle all from a mobile device.

SpotHero valet passes will be validated by Oobeo as part of the partnership, opening up hundreds of new valet locations and reservations for SpotHero customers. By expanding its existing network of facilities, SpotHero reinforces its commitment to easing congestion in high traffic areas where valets add significant value to drivers–near restaurants, hotels and other popular destinations.

“As we look to solve for traffic and congestion, seamless valet parking offers an easy solution to our drivers,” said Mark Lawrence, co-founder and CEO of SpotHero. “Oobeo has developed a platform for making the experience more efficient for valet operators and customers alike. This partnership is a great opportunity for both companies, as we help grow Oobeo’s client base while bringing more valet locations to SpotHero drivers nationwide.”

“We are building a highly differentiated solution for valet companies,” said Philip Crutchfield, CEO of Oobeo. “We’re thrilled to partner with SpotHero to service their ticketless valet clients and give our existing clients the opportunity to grow their revenue by opening their valet locations to SpotHero’s network of drivers.”

SpotHero’s client relationships will be transferred to Oobeo’s platform beginning this month. Upon completion of the partnership integration, Oobeo’s valet operations at hundreds of airports, restaurants, hotels and other locations will be available on the SpotHero parking platform.

This announcement is the latest in a series of deals for SpotHero that enable the company to expand its network of exclusive inventory while building integrations that enable a best-in-class user experience for drivers in need of parking. Last month, SpotHero announced a deal with ParkHub to add hundreds of new event venues and parking locations to its platform. In late 2018, SpotHero announced a partnership with FlashParking to enable one-tap redemption using Bluetooth technology at garages across Austin, Texas.

SpotHero and FlashParking Launch Bluetooth Parking in Austin

Austin pilot program enables SpotHero drivers to enter FlashPARCS-equipped garages
without rolling down car windows

AUSTIN, TX, Oct. 23, 2018 – SpotHero, North America’s leading parking reservation platform, and FlashParking, an innovative parking technology company, today announced a pilot program to enable drivers in Austin, TX who purchase parking with SpotHero to enter garages equipped with FlashParking’s FlashPARCS Smart Stations using the SpotHero app—a process the companies have coined “one-tap redemption.” With this technology, there’s no longer a need for drivers to roll down their car windows to redeem their parking reservation before entering parking garages.

“At SpotHero, we believe faster, easier and more intuitive parking technology is a critical ingredient for the next phase of urban mobility—a multi-model future where parking technologies make the experience of driving and parking easy, convenient and enjoyable. FlashParking shares this vision,” said Adam Zilberbaum, SVP of Technology Partnerships at SpotHero. “One-tap redemption is a concrete step toward that vision, as our companies work together to make parking a completely frictionless experience for drivers today and tomorrow.”

The capability works using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology—a directional, low-voltage Bluetooth signal that remains in sleep mode until a connection is made between the mobile device and FlashParking’s FlashPARCS Smart Station. With FlashBeacon, FlashParking’s patent pending BLE technology, they hope to broaden the impact of this technology by enabling SpotHero drivers to enter garages without needing to open their windows.

“Part of perfecting the parking experience is developing innovative, future-ready technology, like FlashBeacon, that not only simplifies, but enhances the overall parking experience,” said Juan Rodriguez, CEO and co-founder of FlashParking. “SpotHero immediately saw the value and took the opportunity to connect their app to our BLE-ready Smart Stations to deliver a truly seamless parking customer experience via their one-tap redemption.”

The program, which begins on October 22, will include 14 parking locations and will be offered to the majority of SpotHero users, with the intention of expanding the offering after the pilot’s success. Direct Travel, Inc., a top travel management company in North America, today announced that it has partnered with SpotHero for Business, North America’s leading business parking reservation platform and the first mobile solution to help corporate travelers find and book parking on the go. The partnership will increase the value of Direct Travel’s offerings to clients, by helping them manage an estimated $3 billion in work-related parking spend and maximizing corporate travel program budgets with an easy-to-use mobile solution.

Using SpotHero for Business, business travelers can find and reserve parking in close proximity to hotels, airports, downtown offices and client sites, all from their mobile device. “We work with our top clients and prospects to survey the entire scope of their travel program and go beyond the obvious travel savings opportunities,” said Ronda Shipley, SVP Business Development & Strategies at Direct Travel. “As the first TMC to partner with SpotHero for Business, we are excited to offer our clients cutting-edge technology to ensure efficiencies beyond traditional verticals.”

Financial and automotive tech industry veteran will help SpotHero navigate next phase of growth

CHICAGO, October 25, 2017 – SpotHero, North America’s leading parking reservation service, announced today that Connie Capone has joined the company as Chief Financial Officer. The company’s first CFO, Capone brings wide-ranging and extensive experience in operational, consulting and financial roles, as well as in managing venture capital. Capone will oversee SpotHero’s financial functions as the company enters its next phase of growth.

“We are thrilled to welcome Connie to SpotHero,” said Mark Lawrence, co-founder and CEO of SpotHero. “Her impressive background guiding growing companies will be a tremendous asset as we scale our business. With broad experience across many different functions – including finance, accounting, venture capital, consulting and operations – Connie will be an integral member of our team.”

Most recently, Capone served as the CFO and Chief Administrative Officer at GeoDigital, an Atlanta-based high tech software company in the autonomous driving and utility spaces. After earning her MBA from Harvard Business School, she spent more than 10 years as a partner at Chicago-based JK&B Capital, with more than $1.1 billion under management, and founded Venture Capital Advisors. Her earlier roles include a wide range of operational, consulting and financial positions at PwC, Baxter and Booz Allen Hamilton.

“I’m excited to join SpotHero and help build upon the significant milestones the company has achieved in the past six years,” said Capone. “I look forward to using my financial and operational background to help drive the organization forward as it makes parking and transportation easier for everyone.”

Capone is active with Energy Foundry, Moderne Ventures, HBS Club of Chicago, Sweet Beginnings and various not-for-profit events, including the New Trier Jazz Fest. She completed her undergraduate degree at Penn State University, where she was a University Scholar.
