“I have begun everything with the idea that I could succeed, and I never had much patience with the multitudes of people who are always ready to explain why one cannot succeed.”
― Booker T. Washington, Up from Slavery

It all starts with faith just as Booker T Washington showed us with his life.  Up From Slavery is one of the most inspiring, motivating biographies there is and a must read especially today.

On Sunday, when I watched a very different yet in person Academy of Motion Pictures Awards, I thought of Mr. Booker T Washington and Hon. Fredrick Douglass while hearing most beautiful and awakening acceptance speech from Tyler Perry.

We need more men like Tyler Perry.  Just as we need to learn and study Washington and Douglass.  All three man have their faith in common to lean on, and thus serving others.  Booker T Washington said: “The happiest people are those who do the most for others. The most miserable are those who do the least.”  Have you tried it?  No matter how sad, down I am, if I focus on others and helping others, I feel immediately uplifted and happy.  In other words, by helping others, I am helping myself.  My soul is alive then.  If I have a purpose.  What we give others, we give ourselves.  With faith, vision, kindness, compassion and hard work we succeed in anything and everything. Including creating the best economy for all.

As Fredrick Douglass said: “No man can put a chain about the ankle of his fellow man without at last finding the other end fastened about his own neck.”  Once when Mr. Douglass was traveling by train in Pennsylvania and due to his color was forced to travel in the baggage car.  When some of his white companions went to the said baggage car and said to Mr. Douglass that they were sorry he was degraded.  Fredrick Douglass replied: “They cannot degrade Frederick Douglass.  The soul that is within me no man can degrade.  I am not the one that is being degraded on account of this treatment, but those who are inflicting it upon me.”

On Sunday, when Tyler Perry accepted the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his work respecting, feeding and aiding others during the pandemic, with his actions, he called on us to be like Washington and Douglass by refusing the hate.  He invited us to meet him in the middle through telling a story of a homeless lady who was in the middle of the room when he gave her some much needed shoes.  To which she replied, thank you Jesus, my feet are off the ground.”

I pray we all have our feet off the ground while meeting in the middle.  And when we see you at PIE 2021 in Dallas, TX in July, we can all come together in listening and non judgment to create value in parking industry and beyond.  To serve one another.  And to never again attempt to degrade each other’s souls.

Preliminary schedule for PIE 2021 is on line currently.  More extensive schedule is coming on line in June with the full schedule in July 2021 PT.

Thank you.
