REDBRIDGE PILOTS SCHOOL STREETS PROGRAMME WITH VIDEALERT

PINNER, MIDDLESEX, UK – 25 FEBRUARY 2020 – The London Borough of Redbridge has awarded Videalert a contract to install CCTV enforcement cameras as part of the ‘Redbridge School Streets’ pilot programme.  Funded by the Mayor of London and Transport for London, this programme supports the council’s continued action to protect children from air pollution and traffic and to promote walking, scooting and cycling during their journeys to and from school.

Under the innovative scheme, roads leading to three schools in the borough – SS Peter and Paul’s Catholic Primary School, Gordon Primary School and Fairlop Primary School will be closed to traffic at the start and end of the school day during term time.  Complementing the road closures will be the council’s established programme of active and sustainable transport initiatives through the School Travel Planning process.

Redbridge Council Leader Cllr Jas Athwal said: “We have a duty to protect our children’s health, both as a council, and also as members of the community ourselves.  Targeting congested areas outside of schools will cut down on pollution caused by traffic, and also make roads much safer for children.  We know that air quality is a top concern for parents and that’s why we’re working on initiatives such as this to build a cleaner and safer environment for our residents and mitigate the impact pollution has on local young people.”

The contract, awarded through Skanska, will see Videalert installing the latest ONVIF-compliant HD cameras to enforce the no entry zones outside these schools.  The council will be installing signs to notify drivers that these roads can only be accessed by cyclists and pedestrians at the displayed times.   Exemptions will apply to residents and businesses in the zone and blue badge holders requiring access. Non-exempt vehicles that enter the closed streets during the peak times will be identified by Videalert’s automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras.

Video evidence will be transmitted to Videalert’s hosted digital video platform where evidence packs can be viewed and validated prior to sending to the council’s back office system for the issuance of penalty charge notices (PCN).  To reduce the number of appeals, PCN recipients will be able to view still photographs and video footage of the alleged offence over the internet.

Susan Johnson, Headteacher of SS Peter & Paul’s Catholic Primary School, added: “The whole community at SS Peter and Paul’s is delighted with this project which will improve air quality and reduce congestion around the school. It is already a much safer place for the children; thank you Redbridge Council.”

“We expect to see an increasing number of councils adopting a similar approach to raise the quality of air for school children and promote the healthy school streets agenda,” commented Tim Daniels, Sales and Marketing Director at Videalert.  “Our flexible hosted platform makes it a quick and cost-effective process to deploy enforcement in the streets outside schools.  Videalertcan also provide state-of-the-art air quality monitoring sensors that enable councils to demonstrate the improvements that are achieved.”

National Parking Association Heads First Study to Identify the Complete Picture of Urban Congestion

Washington, DC  — The National Parking Association (NPA) has commissioned PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to conduct nationwide research to identify trends and investigate the causes, economic impact, and potential solutions for urban congestion. This first of its kind study investigates the intersection of parking and transportation to form a holistic picture of the urban transportation landscape.

THE FACTS:

  • Congestion cost all US cities in total an estimated $305 billion in 2017. (US DOT – Bureau of Transportation Statistics)
  • Congestion costs commuters $1,000 per person per year. (2018 INRIX traffic score card)
  • The U.S. population of 327 million today will increase to 348 million by 2027 with more than 84% of the population concentrated in urban areas.

NPA’s research will identify how planning and infrastructure in urban areas can support the transportation needs of the population, while managing congestion and reducing economic impacts.

“This research into reducing congestion will provide insights into real-world approaches for mitigating congestion, managing roadway throughput and halting unchecked congestion costs to citizens, cities and employers,” said Christine Banning, NPA president.  “The parking industry is making a significant multi-year commitment to dedicate itself to research related to meaningful transportation, congestion and mobility issues that impact commuters, communities and the economy.”

Banning leads NPA and its 2,500 members in representing all facets of the parking industry. She serves on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Transportation Committee.  Principals and consultants from PwC’s Strategy, Global Automotive Practice, and U.S. Mobility Practice, comprise the core research team producing the report.

“PwC’s expertise and insights into the Internet of Things (IoT), automotive industry and mobility innovations will strengthen the foundation of the study. The analysis of macro-economic trends cross-referenced to automotive and congestion information will form a wide angle viewing lens for exploring real-world solutions for possible solutions for reducing congestion.” adds Banning.

Private vehicles, public transportation, parking and infrastructure form the urban transportation ecosystem. Parking is the beginning and end-point of the first and last mile. Understanding how communities are served by this ecosystem can provide new insights into the city of the future and transportation solutions to meet the needs of a growing population.

VIMOC Technologies: California State University, Sacramento is Eliminating Near Misses at a Dangerous Cross Walk and Enhancing Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety

August 28, 2018

California State University, Sacramento is Eliminating Near Misses at a Dangerous Cross Walk and Enhancing Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety.

Mountain View, CA, August 28, 2018  – VIMOC Technologies, a leader in Vision-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions at the edge of the network, has deployed their popular Crosswalk Safety solution at Sacramento State (California State University, Sacramento) to increase pedestrian and bicycle safety.  VIMOC’s Rosella™ Platform has helped the University reduce near misses involving pedestrian and bicycles at a campus crosswalk historically challenged by nighttime lighting conditions and speeding drivers.

Each year in the US, pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities comprise about 16 percent of all traffic fatalities with approximately 5,000 pedestrian deaths and 800 bicyclist deaths. Another 65,000 pedestrians and 48,000 bicyclists are injured in roadway crashes annually. The advent of intelligent, vision-based platforms that inform the infrastructure about the presence and status of vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists will be one of the core foundations of traffic safety in the future. Public acceptance of automated and autonomous vehicles on a large scale basis will not happen until pedestrian and bicycle safety issues are adequately addressed.

Sacramento State has been at the forefront of providing safe paths to pedestrians and bicycles. As a large campus with a daily population of 35,000 people, pedestrian and bicycle safety is critical to the day-to-day transportation management in the campus. “The Hornet cross walk has been an area of concern for pedestrians and bicycles with several near misses reported,” said Tony Lucas, Senior Director of Sacramento State’s Transportation and Parking services. “Identifying the right technology solution to increase safety was critical for us.

In partnership with VIMOC Technologies, Sacramento State has implemented a real-time, highly accurate AI-enabled Crosswalk Safety solution with traffic signage and lighting provided by xWalk.  VIMOC’s Crosswalk Safety solution detects and classifies pedestrian and/or bicycles approaching the crosswalk, automatically triggering flashing lights (from xWalk) on a traffic sign and pavement warning vehicles to slow down or stop.  Additionally, the system is constantly sending data to the VIMOC cloud, enabling University transportation operators to visually analyze crosswalk usage, pedestrian and bicycle numbers and traffic patterns to better understand their environment.

VIMOC’s Artificial Intelligence enabled cross walk safety solution helped us eliminate near misses and created a safer cross walk and dynamic situation awareness for drivers,” said Tony Lucas.

Working with Sacramento State has given us the opportunity to demonstrate and validate a new and effective approach for pedestrian and bicycle safety,” said Tarik Hammadou, CEO of VIMOC.  “We are working to enable the future of intelligent transportation in which vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians can safely coexist.

VIMOC will continue to work with Sacramento State by providing its AI-based solutions in pursuit of a Smart Campus environment.
