Derq Demonstrates Industry-Leading AI Solution to Tackle Spike in Pedestrian and Cyclist Fatalities

Derq Demonstrates Industry-Leading AI Solution to Tackle Spike in Pedestrian and Cyclist Fatalities

Detroit, MI (June 1, 2022) – Derq, an award-winning MIT spin-off and leading provider of real-time Artificial Intelligence (AI) analytics solutions for connected roads and vehicles has successfully deployed an end-to-end solution to address burning needs in pedestrian and cyclist safety. In collaboration with Control Technologies, Inc. (CT),  Danlaw, and CeVe, Derq has most recently demonstrated in Florida its ability to prevent collisions between drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists using a variety of approaches, including connected vehicle messages, flashing pedestrian signs, actuating traffic signals, and smartphone application alerts. The solution also reports advanced safety insights, helping agencies better understand and improve road safety performance.

The technology is much needed today, as reported earlier this month by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), traffic fatalities are at a 16-year high, with nearly 43,000 roadway fatalities in 2021, which has increased 10.5% from 2020. In addition, pedestrian and cyclist fatalities are up 13% and 5%, respectively, compared to 2020. Under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the new Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program was established with $5 billion to fund regional, local, and Tribal initiatives over the next five years to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries.

Deployed at the edge, Derq’s real-time perception and connectivity AI platform ingests and aggregates data from various sources, including traffic cameras, signal controllers, connected vehicles, smartphone apps, and other cloud-based services.

“Over the years, we’ve partnered with various leading ITS technology providers across the US and have deployed thousands of intelligent sensor-based solutions,” said Pete Ganci, VP at CT, “the Derq AI Platform is the only one on the market that we have seen capable of powering a fully integrated pedestrian and cyclist safety solution, allowing vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists to communicate with each other and the infrastructure, while also delivering real-time adaptive traffic management and reporting advanced safety analytics, such as pedestrian compliance issues and near-miss reporting.”

The Derq solution is capable of accurately detecting, tracking, and predicting the intent of pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles as they approach crossings in real-time through its AI-powered computer vision algorithms. By fusing this detection data with data ingested from traffic signal controllers, connected car messages (C-V2X), and smartphone applications the solution generates real-time alerts, and sets off decisions to protect pedestrians and cyclists from hazardous conflicts with vehicles.

“We are proud of the tremendous progress we have made in our cutting-edge technology, trusted by major agencies across the US,” said Karl Jeanbart, COO of Derq. “Driver, pedestrian, and cyclist safety are paramount to everything we do. Our proven third-party-tested solution can be deployed immediately to alert drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists about potential hazards in their environment, avoid collisions, and save lives.”

Derq and its partners recently demonstrated the solution to Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) officials as well as industry professionals at the Traffic Engineering Research Lab (TERL), located in Tallahassee, Florida. During this demonstration, several use cases were highlighted, including:

  • Placing a call within a traffic signal controller to activate the desired pedestrian phase by utilizing the data generated from the fusion of passive pedestrian detection and a smartphone application.
  • Activating flashing pedestrian signs (such as RRFBs) at mid-block crossings for an approaching pedestrian by utilizing the data generated from the fusion of passive pedestrian detection and a smartphone application.
  • Alerting approaching vehicles both audibly and visually of pedestrian or cyclist presence based upon a potential conflict prediction made possible by the broadcasting of C-V2X messages such as Basic Safety Messages (BSM) and Personal Safety Messages (PSM) generated by the fusion of passive pedestrian detection and a smartphone application.
  • Alerting pedestrians and cyclists using a smartphone application at crossings of approaching vehicles based upon a potential conflict prediction made possible by the fusion of advanced vehicle detection and C-V2X messages (BSMs) broadcasted by the vehicle.

In addition to all of the above, the platform also generates an array of real-time safety and traffic insights, such as the detection of traffic violations, pedestrian compliance issues, and road-user conflict (near-miss) data, providing up-to-date, granular data to enable the analysis of safety issues.

Danlaw, an industry leader in connected vehicle technologies with more than eight thousand V2X devices throughout North America, provided its RouteLink C-V2X Roadside Unit and AutoLink C-V2X Onboard Unit for this demonstration.

CeVe provided iOS and Android smartphone apps that connect drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists to transportation infrastructure. The apps help pedestrians and cyclists request a touchless activation of crosswalk signals and notify them of nearby vehicles as they approach intersections.

Ultra Engineering and Precision Contracting Services (PCS) also supported the technology team during the demonstration.

Fleet Advantage Celebrates Air Quality Awareness Week By Helping Corporate Transportation Fleets Reduce Emissions

Fleet Advantage Celebrates Air Quality Awareness Week By Helping Corporate Transportation Fleets Reduce Emissions

Innovative Solutions Help Modernize Fleets So They Can ‘Be Air Aware & Be Prepared!’

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (May 4, 2022) – Air pollution is one of the world’s largest health and environmental problems, and is one of the world’s leading risk factors for death, attributed to an estimated 11.65% of deaths globally. As a leading innovator in truck fleet business analytics, equipment financing, and life cycle cost management (LCCM), Fleet Advantage recognizes Air Quality Awareness Week 2022 (celebrated May 2 – 6) by offering complimentary Emissions Scorecards for corporate transportation fleets in its ongoing efforts to promote better air quality.

Each year, the NOAA National Weather Service, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. Forest Service, and U.S. Department of State join the EPA to recognize and celebrate Air Quality Awareness Week. Its theme this year is “Be Air Aware & Prepared!”, and the goal is to promote events that increase air quality awareness and encourage people to check the Air Quality Index (AQI) daily.

“Since the day we opened our doors, our company has been focused on bringing about change to the industry through lower carbon output and cleaner air quality,” said Katerina Jones, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Fleet Advantage. “Our innovative programs illustrate the deep commitment we have to helping our corporate fleet partners serve as industry leaders while driving significant change for the benefit of our nation’s air quality.”

Through the pioneering efforts of Fleet Advantage, the transportation fleet industry is now paying closer attention to their truck’s Life Cycles to understand where they can drive sustainability measures by optimizing replacement cycles. Rather than extending the truck’s use for several years, companies are leveraging Fleet Modernization Studies and the company’s Emissions Scorecards, that scrutinize truck’s performance data and economic factors to determine an optimum procurement and disposal strategy.

As part of the comprehensive Fleet Modernization Study, the Emissions Scorecard reviews the entire fleet by year, make, model, and compares fuel and mileage data and provides detailed information on CO2 reduction in metric tons and gallons of fuel saved, each time the truck was replaced, as well as forecasted savings.

Fleet Advantage customers operate fleets with lower cost per mile, a reduced carbon footprint and improved safety and driver morale by maintaining their fleet’s average life at about 2-3 years. This helps compliment ESG strategies for its customers in their goal to report to regulators and critical stakeholders.

In March, the company announced a new program to help corporate truck fleets certify their greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) output, as recently mandated under a proposed rule issued by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Fleet Advantage is the only finance lessor that has been certifying such measures for a decade with a focus on tractor trailer fleets that operate high annual mileages (MPY).

Updated Parkopedia app aids drivers in Japan with industry-leading parking data

●  Updated iOS app for the Japanese market allows drivers to find parking at more than 100,000 locations nationwide and more than 2,000 on-street locations in Tokyo

●  Highly accurate and complete data helps drivers to comply with strict parking restrictions in the country by providing information such as location, prices and opening hours

26 April 2022 – London, UK / Tokyo, Japan: Parkopedia, the global leader in digital parking services, has updated its free iPhone parking app in Japan, helping drivers to find parking at more than 100,000 off-street locations, across 1,300 cities and towns nationwide, and also at more than 2,000 on-street locations in Tokyo.

As one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with nearly 60 million drivers1, space for parking is severely limited. The 1962 Garage Act (Shako Shomei Sho) requires that motorists provide evidence of access to a local parking space within 2 kilometres of their homes.

The Parkopedia app, which is available to download from the Apple App Store, provides drivers with the precise location of more than 100,000 off-street parking facilities across the country, as well as details such as the number of spaces, prices, hours of operation, height restrictions and if electric vehicle (EV) charge points are present.

The app also helps drivers to comply with the country’s strict parking regulations and avoid expensive fines. In Japan, on-street parking is typically prohibited in major cities, however, a limited number of exceptions are made for daytime and evening parking at metered locations, featured within the app. The Tokyo metropolitan area, with a population of more than 37 million sees drivers compete for a very limited number of on-street parking spaces. Parkopedia’s parking app allows drivers to find more than 2,000 on-street locations in Tokyo and provides them with the accurate information required to park with ease.

In the near future, Parkopedia will be adding its dynamic parking service to the premium version of the app, which will be available for a one-off fee of 610 JPY. Dynamic predictive data provides drivers with information regarding space occupancy and accurately forecasts if a space will be available at their time of arrival, based on cutting-edge parking modelling research, which leverages parking payment transaction data, digital imagery and vehicle sensor data, to provide the highest quality predictions.

Eugene Tsyrklevich, Founder and CEO of Parkopedia, said: “By updating our parking app in Japan and now covering over 100,000 locations, we are able to better support drivers across the country to find parking more easily. As part of our continued commitment to the Japanese market, we launched our dedicated Japanese subsidiary last year, whilst also continuing to expand the coverage of our market-leading parking data. Shortly, we will also be providing our reservation and payment solutions in Japan which are currently used by various global automakers for their drivers in Europe, North America and China. Our ambition is to provide seamless parking experiences for all drivers, and support automakers in Japan to cater to growing customer demand for next-generation driver convenience features.”

Parkopedia uses its industry-leading data collection services to deliver accurate and complete parking data in Japan. Recent Ground Truth Testing studies in both the US and China have named Parkopedia as the market leader for parking data, with a global database of over 70 million spaces across 89 countries.

Flowbird Group to Expand Off-Board Fare Payments for Metro Transit

March 30, 2022

Flowbird Group to Expand Off-Board Fare Payments for Metro Transit

Next Generation Fare Payment System Makes Travel Easier and More Convenient in the Twin Cities

Moorestown, NJ – Flowbird Transport Intelligence, a division of Flowbird Group and leader in transit fare payment systems, is proud to announce it will be expanding its fare payment solutions for Metro Transit, the public transportation operator in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota. The expansion includes 185 Strada StreetSmart Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs), including Flowbird’s cloud-based analytics platform, Flowbird Hub, that will service the agency’s new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes.

Metro Transit is ranked as one of the best transit systems in the United States, with ridership making its way back up to Pre-covid levels of 270,000 riders per day. With Metro Transit being the largest public transportation operator in the state, commuters rely on the system daily to reach their destination safely and on time. The agency currently operates the METRO Blue and Green light rail lines, Northstar commuter rail line, and more than 100 bus routes. This year, Metro Transit announced their newest expansion to the system, the Orange line (light rail) and the D-Line (BRT).

Metro Transit partnered with Flowbird in 2016 for off-board fare collection for its A-line BRT route, serving some of the busiest corridors in the system. Flowbird successfully delivered Strada Ticket Vending Machines to make travel easier and quicker for riders. Since then, boarding and dwell times have greatly reduced.

This new expansion will feature a total of 185 Strada StreetSmart ticket vending machines to service the new BRT routes. Featuring an easy-to-read 9.7” touch screen, the new TVM’s will allow riders to conveniently purchase fare tickets on-site before boarding. Each machine is equipped to accept a variety of payment methods including coins, bills, credit and debit cards, as well as contactless payments. Riders can select from one or multiple fare options from the LED touchscreen display and can choose from several different language options. Each machine is carefully designed to withstand the region’s harsh winter climate – where the average annual snowfall is almost double the US average, and average temperatures do not climb above freezing.

The central data system, the Flowbird Hub Fare Payment Platform, manages and controls all sales and devices remotely, while providing the ability to update fares and purchase items. Information is consistently fed back to the cloud-based monitoring system so that potential issues can be addressed. The user-friendly platform allows agency staff to easily monitor each device and view important diagnostics.

By expanding their modernized fare collection, Metro Transit will be able to continue to offer convenient payment options, increase access to the transit system, speed boarding time, and reduce other operating costs of fare collection.

Installation of the new TVM’s will begin on the BRT lines with light rail to follow.

Many transit agencies in the U.S. are working toward modernizing payment and ticketing as part of their overall fare collection system.  The partnership between Metro Transit and Flowbird continues Flowbird North America’s growth in the transit sector where it serves major transit agencies such as New York City Transit, Community Transit, Houston METRO, Lane Transit, M-1 Rail, and Portland Streetcar.

Beam Global: City of Los Angeles StreetsLA Division Previews EV ARC™ Charging New Plug-In Hybrid Street Sweepers

February 17, 2022

City of Los Angeles StreetsLA Division Previews EV ARC™ Charging New Plug-In Hybrid Street Sweepers

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 17, 2022 — Beam Global, (Nasdaq: BEEM, BEEMW), the leading provider of innovative sustainable technology for electric vehicle (EV) charging, outdoor media and energy security, today announced that the City of Los Angeles StreetsLA Division held an event demonstrating its new plug-in hybrid street sweepers and EV ARC™ sustainable EV charging systems at the StreetsLA North Hollywood Depot. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held February 15, 2022 to inaugurate the City’s Center for Green Innovation. Beam CEO Desmond Wheatley was present alongside Mayor Garcetti, Congressman Cardenas and City officials where the EV ARC™ powered the new plug-in hybrid street sweepers.

The EV ARC™ systems support LA’s Green New Deal that targets 100% net zero by 2050. Each EV ARC™ system generates and stores its own clean electricity and delivers that electricity to power City fleet vehicles day or night, and during inclement weather and power outages. The optional Emergency Power Panel can provide vital power to first responders in an emergency or grid outages, adding to the City’s energy resiliency and disaster preparedness. The charging system is transportable and can be relocated as City charging patterns emerge and change.

Speaking on the EV ARC™ system’s ability to continue to deliver EV charging and emergency power during a disaster, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said, “If God forbid, during an earthquake or something our power lines go down, we can continue to be there for our City and deliver what our City needs.”

“We need to take advantage of our incredible natural resource: the sun to charge our vehicles. Los Angeles is the perfect place for this. The Beam Solar Charging Canopy, right to my left over there, just standing under it I felt supercharged,” said Councilmember Mitchell Farrell. “This does not require an infrastructure to build out as the Mayor just said, and we need to purchase many more. The equipment can also be easily transported to other locations. So this is efficient in terms of both costs and practicality. In the event of a power outage, the battery can be used to power communications equipment, as well other tools needed to respond to an emergency.”

EV ARC™ systems will be deployed in Los Angeles StreetsLA locations with zero electrical upgrade costs, zero construction costs, and no disruption to city operations that can occur with construction projects, saving the City budget and downtime.

“This exciting event gave us an opportunity to demonstrate, once again, the multiple layers of value delivered by the EV ARC in advance of delivering the first systems for active deployment in Los Angeles,” said Beam Global CEO Desmond Wheatley. “Today we charged the City’s new electric street sweepers and demonstrated that StreetsLA can provide charging and emergency power in any of their multiple depot locations without having to rely on grid connections. Mayor Garcetti, who recently spoke at COP26 in Glasgow, Congressman Cardenas, and the other City officials, all spoke about the fantastic benefits of using the locally generated solar power and energy storage that our products provide, to save money and ensure continuity during disasters. Beam Global EV ARC™ Selected for Autonomous Wildfire Fighting Exercise

Project Vesta aims to revolutionize the fight against wildfires by integrating air and ground technologies in a live fire mitigation experiment

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 09, 2022 – Beam Global, (Nasdaq: BEEM, BEEMW), the leading provider of innovative sustainable technology for electric vehicle (EV) charging, outdoor media and energy security, announced that Project Vesta, an unmanned fire control prototype that combines state-of-the art technology and Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) equipment has selected the EV ARC™ off-grid solar-powered EV charging and emergency power system to provide a critical component of an innovative fire mitigation system that networks autonomous air and ground vehicles, solar charging capabilities, fire response equipment and communications. The Project Vesta goal is persistent fire surveillance and analytics capabilities enabled by edge computing and rapid interoperability.

“The Project Vesta team is excited to have Beam Global join this autonomous wildfire fighting experiment. Their engagement with the SoCal Tech Bridge continues to deepen as Marines and Sailors across several west coast bases have access to EV ARC systems,” said Captain Ben Cohen, U.S. Marine Corps. “To have Beam bring their expertise in providing vital off-grid alternative energy to the experiment is absolutely a win.”

The event will be hosted February 14-18, 2022 by the Joint Interagency Field Experimentation (JIFX) 22-2 at Camp Roberts, CA. The organizations spearheading Project Vesta are NavalX SoCal Tech Bridge as part of the U.S. Marine Corps, JIFX as part of the Naval Post Graduate School (NPS) in Monterrey, TESIAC with their Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offering and CANA Advisors. Public Private Partnerships (P3) demonstrate how collaboration between government agencies and private sector companies can target large-scale projects and problems to drive solutions faster and more effectively than when approached in silos.

“Wildfires cause profound loss of loss of life, property, commerce and natural resources, and they are increasing in frequency and severity,” said Desmond Wheatley, CEO of Beam Global. “We are proud to be an active participant in Project Vesta. The EV ARC transportable off-grid EV charging system will provide vital energy to drones and electric ground vehicles equipped to help manage and suppress fires. The EV ARC system requires no liquid fuels, it’s always running, and it does not create fire danger or pollution as a diesel or gasoline generator might.”

Project Vesta is a critical step in the evolution of faster, safer and more effective wildfire control and mitigation. Wildfires are a significant problem continually growing in severity and scope globally and especially in the California region. The threat to people, wildlife, natural and commercial resources, and the environment is profound and long-lasting. First responders committed to fighting fires face significant boots-on-the-ground peril and Project Vesta aims to accelerate the use of technology to detect fires sooner, deploy fire suppressing measures faster, and reduce the risk to human life.

Duncan Solutions supports Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles Transportation Program

WILMINGTON, Del., Feb. 09, 2022  — Duncan Solutions, a leading provider of parking and tolling management solutions, is pleased to announce its sponsorship of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles’ Transportation Program. Duncan’s parent company, Navient, along with its other subsidiaries are proud to enter the second year of their national partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

“Transportation is one of the primary barriers to youth engaging in after school enrichment at our Clubs,” said Patrick Mahoney, president & CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles. “Through the support of Duncan Solutions, we will be able to safely transport at least 50 more youth daily to our location in Watts—a community where we have seen a significant increase in violence over the past year.”

The contribution will help young people to participate in safe and high-quality after-school programming as well as engage in activities such as sport competitions and outdoor field trips.

“Duncan Solutions and Navient are deeply committed to our partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, just as we are deeply committed to helping communities solve their mobility challenges,” said Marc Lucey, director, business development for Duncan Solutions. “Here in the Los Angeles area, we’re thrilled to deliver on both of these commitments.”

In 2021, as part of the Navient family of companies, Duncan also supported Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s launch of Roadmap to Careers, a career exploration tool that helps young people develop a plan for their future, and new digital Diplomas 2 Degrees programming to help young people and their families learn about how to plan and pay for college.
