Former Uber Exec Joins Fast-Growing Logistics Startup Nuvocargo As Head of People

Lauren Burdick joins executive team as Nuvocargo continues ramping up new hires to support rapid growth

NEW YORK, Jan. 18, 2022  — Nuvocargo, the only all-in-one digital platform for US/Mexico trade, announced today that Lauren Burdick has joined the company as Head of People.

In this new role at Nuvocargo, Burdick will leverage her 10+ years experience leading operational teams and projects in the US and in Mexico to manage the company’s employee experience and ensure that it is closely aligned with its vision, mission and values. She will define and execute the strategy behind Nuvocargo’s employee value proposition and compensation philosophy and ensure process excellence in talent acquisition, people operations, and learning and development.

Burdick joins Nuvocargo from the $8.7B LatAm startup Kavak, where she led the Central Mexico region as General Manager and later the company’s Latin America customer service teams. Prior to that, Burdick was with Uber, where she helped scale the Uber Mexico customer service team to 500 and also served as Chief of Staff and Head of Corporate Strategy for Uber Eats LatAm. Burdick was a US-Mexico Fulbright binational business scholar and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Comparative Race Studies from the University of Chicago.

“Lauren is a fantastic addition to our executive team – her unique background and extensive operational and logistical experience will be crucial as we scale the company rapidly in 2022 and beyond,” said Deepak Chhugani, Co-founder and CEO of Nuvocargo. “Her experience with world-class startups such as Uber and Kavak will be invaluable as we grow our team from 80 to 250+ people in the coming 12-18 months.”

“I joined Nuvocargo because of the co-founders’ strong vision to create a high performing binational team at a very exciting time in the logistics industry,” said Burdick. “In order to be successful, we need to foster a unique culture that brings in talent from logistics alongside tech and others from Mexico and across the US. These two markets are near and dear to my heart as my homeland by birth and my new home by choice. Bringing the vision requires world-class technology and world-class people. I look forward to being one of the architects making Nuvocargo’s vision a reality.”
Nuvocargo recently raised $20.5M, led by Tiger Global Management, at a $180M valuation – nearly tripling the valuation from its most recent fundraise in April 2021. This additional funding brings Nuvocargo’s total raised to date to $37.8M since its launch in late 2019. Nuvocargo will use the funds to continue accelerating growth, expanding its product solutions in the industry, and strengthening its existing carrier and shipper network on both sides of the border. It is also developing new revenue streams, starting with add-on financial products for shippers and carriers, targeting the $125B+ market for supply chain finance between the US and Mexico.

Uber and EVgo Expand Partnership to Support High-Volume Rideshare Drivers with Fast, Reliable Public Charging

LOS ANGELES—-Nov 9, 2021– EVgo Inc. (NASDAQ: EVGO), a first mover in fleet electrification and owner and operator of the nation’s largest public fast charging network for electric vehicles (EVs) and first powered by 100% renewable electricity, today announced an expansion to its EV charging program for rideshare drivers on Uber’s platform. With nearly one million rideshare vehicles on the road, electrification of rideshare provides a significant opportunity to add high-utilization drivers to EVgo’s network. Featuring new discounts and benefits for all drivers using Uber, this expanded initiative builds upon the existing program’s success to ultimately increase access to, and utilization of, EVgo’s network of over 800 public fast chargers — helping both companies further accelerate the adoption of zero-emission transportation at scale.

Rideshare drivers often charge multiple times per day. A recent EVgo survey of drivers in the EVgo program, indicates that approximately 34% of drivers drive 400 to 800 miles each week and another 47% drive more than 800 miles each week and rely heavily on public fast charging. Conveniently located in high ridership urban areas, EVgo’s fast chargers enable drivers without access to at-home charging to charge in between Uber trips.

“Helping drivers go electric remains one of the most important things we can do as a company,” said Adam Gromis, Head of Sustainability Policy at Uber. “The enhanced incentives from EVgo’s program help drivers save money and take another step towards transforming Uber into a zero emissions platform.”

As part of the expanded EVgo Discount Program with Uber, drivers are granted access to discounted EVgo accounts and pricing based on their Uber Pro status. Drivers using Uber — regardless of status– will continue to be able to access EVgo’s member rates without any monthly fees. Drivers with Uber Pro Gold, Platinum, or Diamond status will unlock even lower EVgo Plus rates, saving up to 30% on charging costs over EVgo’s standard Pay As You Go rates.*

“EVgo’s ongoing partnership with Uber tackles access to reliable, affordable and convenient public charging solutions while simultaneously accelerating the electrification of rideshare vehicles,” said Cathy Zoi, CEO at EVgo. “We are excited to see more rideshare drivers making the switch to electric and look forward to providing fast charging for high volume rideshare drivers and decarbonizing this growing segment of transportation.”

The enhancement of this program further accelerates Uber’s initiative to become a fully zero-emission platform by 2030 in the US. In addition to new charging discounts, EV drivers can also earn more per trip from Uber, including a dollar more per trip incentive for fully electric drivers on any product plus $0.50 more when completing Uber Green trips. Uber Green, is the most widely available low- or no-emission on-demand ride product in the world, now available in 100 urban areas across 2 continents. By selecting Uber Green, riders can support current drivers who use sustainable modes of transportation as well as Uber’s Green Future Program, which utilizes Uber Green fees and proceeds to help hundreds of thousands of rideshare drivers transition to electric vehicles by 2025. Drivers who drive a Tesla will also have access to nearly 600 integrated Tesla connectors at EVgo stations across the U.S., enabling them to charge their vehicles without the need for an adaptor.

The headline for this week newsletter is about Uber and Lyft and their race to the EV future.  You can read it here:  May 10, 2021 – How Uber and Lyft Are Losing the Race to the Electric Future.

“Today, a miniscule 0.5% of ride-hailing vehicles in the U.S. are electric, according to clean-energy research firm BloombergNEF, trailing the 0.7% of EVs in the country’s passenger vehicle fleet. By the end of the decade, only a quarter of new car sales in the U.S. are expected to be electric. For ride-hailing fleets to be entirely electric by then, they’ll have to somehow go from lagging behind.”  As it is right now, TNC’s don’t exactly help the environment: “each ride-hailing trip causes about 69% more greenhouse gases than the trips they displace, according to a report last year from the Union of Concerned Scientists.”  And what will happen down the line, only the Lord knows.  Perhaps gas prices going up in such a speedy manner, we get the ride share drivers switch to electric cars despite the cost involved.

In the meantime, at least in Sweden, it is easier than ever to drive an EV.  Read it here: May 6, 2021 – Easypark Expands the Possibilities for Electric Car Charging – Now With InCharge in the App.  In 2021 more and more people are buying rechargeable cars. 37% of newly registered cars in Sweden were all electric or hybrids vs 28% in 2020.

This week there is also a follow up from our JVH apropos of Tony Jordan and his views on the EV future.  For one, John agrees with Tony: May 4, 2021 – Hell Freezes over, JVH and Tony Agree – JVH, Parking Today.
