Urbiotica: Two New Smart Parking Lots Arrive in the Province of Salamanca

The municipalities of Ciudad Rodrigo and Peñaranda de Bracamonte, in Salamanca, will have two smart parking areas installed by the end of the year. This is thanks to funding from the Diputación de Salamanca together with the Tax Collection and Management Agency (Regtsa).

In Peñaranda de Bracamonte, with an area of 23 km² and more than 6,000 inhabitants, 50 sensors will be installed. Ciudad de Rodrigo, in turn, will have 100 sensors installed. The Provincial Council, through Regtsa, put out to tender the installation of this type of solution and these are the localities that have obtained the highest score.

At the time of the valuation, the technicians took into account aspects such as whether the town had been declared a Historic Site or the volume of revenue it generated.

The sensor that will be used for both projects is the U-Spot M2M, a spot-to-spot detection sensor that uses the mobile network directly. In addition, there will be 5 variable message signs to guide drivers directly to free spots.

Thanks to the sensorization of parking spaces, local residents will be guided directly to free spaces and traffic and chaos generated by vehicles looking for parking will be avoided.

The information about the spots collected by the sensors will be integrated with the Thinking Cities Telefonica platform, a FIWARE-based platform that allows connecting devices and receiving data, integrating all device protocols and connectivity methods.

How Does the Urban Guidance Solution Work?
The driver goes to a free parking space guided by the information displayed on the variable message sign. He parks his vehicle. The U-Spot sensor detects the arrival of the vehicle and sends the information to the platform.
The platform collects the data and sends the updated information to the variable information panels with the new availability, which in this case will indicate one less free space.
When the vehicle is removed, U-Spot no longer detects its presence. It sends the information again so that the system transmits that the space is again unoccupied.
From the U-Admin platform, the manager can configure, monitor and consult all system information.

This simple system of smart parking, Salamanca guarantees real-time information to his residents so that they can easily decide where to park their vehicles. Optimal use of the parking spaces is guaranteed thanks to the updated information. In addition, they are guided to the areas with the highest parking availability.

On the other hand, the city enjoys smoother traffic flow by avoiding vehicles circulating in search of parking. Urban mobility is improved and citizens enjoy a less noisy, more efficient and sustainable city with a better quality of life.

Urbiotica releases an end-2-end solution to control the use of reserved parking spaces

Urbiotica has developed a complete solution to control the use of the reserved parking spaces for loading and unloading users, persons with reduced mobility, and electric vehicles.

Barcelona, 14th of October 2020 – The misuse of parking spaces reserved for specific uses has an important and negative impact on urban mobility and is a pain in the neck for most public administrations.

A clear example is the fraudulent use of parking spots reserved for people with reduced mobility. The abusive use of these places causes significant disruption to the lives of this vulnerable group, which needs these special places located near the access points in order to carry out their daily activities. Another common situation in cities is parking violations in loading and unloading areas, making delivery vehicles double park with the consequent chaos and discomfort in the area. It is also frequent to find users who are badly parked in the spaces reserved for the electric charging of vehicles, preventing the proper development of urban sustainable mobility plans.

In order to guarantee a fluid and sustainable mobility in the cities, as well as the well-being of the inhabitants, it is essential to ensure that the regulations for the use of these reserved parking areas are respected. The challenge for city managers and parking operators lies in the ability to improve and optimize the service, applying technology to the process.

With this new solution, Urbiotica offers municipalities and companies the opportunity to manage regulated spaces efficiently, achieving a much more effective control and greater productivity of the area.

The solution is composed of:

·       U-Spot is a sensor installed in the parking space that uses magnetic technology to detect in real-time the entry and exit of vehicles in the parking spaces as well as the duration of the session. The M2M version of the sensor also stands out because it does not need a gateway to transmit the data, making it the ideal solution for scattered parking spaces applications. By using the new NB-IoT protocol, the costs of deploying these types of projects are drastically reduced, providing an efficient solution to scenarios in which a suitable technological system could not be guaranteed until now.

  • The ParkTime APP is designed for citizens authorized to use the reserved spaces. It informs these users (people with reduced mobility, carriers, …), about where to find available reserved places, and allows them to declare their arrivals and departures. The APP digitalizes the parking permits and complies with the user identification requirements for a correct application. It has been designed with geofence and push notification functionalities that offer a useful and very simple experience to users.
  • The ParkCTRL APP matches the user information with the occupancy status of the parking spot and time spent by the vehicle. Through the APP the guards can consult the information and be alerted in case of fraud, exponentially optimizing the control routes.
  • The U-Admin platform, including the alert engine and an API, allows the management and supervision of the solution, as well as the authorization of the ParkTime APP users. The solution is 100% flexible and can be easily integrated with third-party APPs.

How does it work:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBR6tI9ZUqg

The identification and control of the users parked in each parking space drastically reduces the infractions and increases vehicle rotations in the spaces, which impacts favorably on the parking availability. This greater availability is transmitted to users through the ParkTime App, increasing the possibilities and speed of finding a free parking space. In addition, the real-time display of alerts makes it possible to optimize the control operations and the resources allocated to this management and to prioritize the areas with the most infringements.

4 Spanish cities have already decided to put their trust in Urbiotica to control a total of 2.000 reserved parking spaces, plus international experiences are expected soon.

Urbiotica announces the next launch of its U- Spot M2M parking sensor with NB-IoT communication

After several months working on the development of the U-Spot M2M, Urbiotica enters the final validation phase with the installation of the first prototypes in Barcelona.

The U-Spot M2M will be based on the new telecom industry-driven NB-IoT standard and will enable direct sensor-to-cloud communication without the need to install dedicated gateways. Consequently, the installation and subsequent operation of projects will be greatly simplified and the total cost for the Client will be reduced.

The U-Spot M2M will expand Urbiotica’s range of parking products to address a broad segment of customers who need to manage reserved parking spaces such as PRM or Loading zones, which is one of the cities’ biggest headaches. These kinds of places are scattered, among others, complicating the installations from an economic and operational point of view by having to implement solutions with dedicated gateways.

“This is a very important step for us” explains Josep Mª Torras, CEO of the company, “We have actively analyzed the LPWAN technologies that have appeared in recent years, but until the arrival of the NB-IoT we have not obtained good enough results to be able to provide a M2M product to our customers with the same reliability and robustness that we provide with our Gateway solution. We are convinced that the U-Spot M2M will open the door to new markets as it is an installable device in any country that has deployed NB-IoT or LTE-M network.”

According to Marc Boher, Urbiotica’s CCO, “Customers today expect much more than a reliable vehicle detection solution, they need a comprehensive solution that meets their management needs. In the last 2 years we have been focused on the development of a global guidance solution for urban environments that has allowed us to be positioned as leaders in this market segment.” As a complement to the new sensor U-Spot M2M, Urbiotica is working on a complete solution for the management of PRM and Loading parking spaces based on the experience acquired in the execution of these kind of projects.

The next steps towards a 100% market-ready M2M solution is to complete the validation phase and depends on the commercial launch of NB-IoT services by mobile operators. “Urbiotica is really satisfied with the first results and expects to be able to supply the first commercial units by the end of the year. The team works very actively with operators from several countries to make it happen very soon” concludes Josep Mª Torras.

Urbiotica launches a solution for the control of urban noise

The increase in population and the frenetic activity in cities have resulted in a proportional increase in noise with noise generated traffic being deemed the main source of noise pollution today.

Urbiotica is proposing a noise monitoring network, that allows for constant real time monitoring of the trouble spots throughout the city as well as serves as an alert system, emitting alerts when the sound level reaches a certain point exceeding the preset limits. This is achieved thanks to the new U-Sound device: an autonomous wireless sensor designed by Urbiotica to measure noise in the city.

The information generated by the system is accessible to both the manager and the citizen through the VisorAcustic. By accessing this, both parties gain real time data. Thus, the information is a useful tool in furthering the citizen’s transparency.

Design, robustness and durability: U-Sound is designed for strength and durability. Its purpose is to integrate the aesthetics of the environment, ensuring the strength of the hardware and communication accuracy. These aspects of U-Sound allow the device to reach of lifespan of 10 years.

Urbiotica’s noise surveillance system has already been launched in the city of Girona.

Urbiotica manages the guidance of Audi’s 5,000 parking spaces in Ingolstadt with 22 sensors

The Audi factory located in Ingolstadt -Germany- has a parking lot with a capacity of more than 5,000 spaces. With so many parking spaces, a system needed to be implemented that would optimise the use of the spaces and reduce the vehicle flow caused by cars looking for free spaces, so that workers would not waste any time looking for parking and could go to work more relaxed and satisfied.

Urbiotica’s proposal is based on the installation of 22 wireless parking capacity sensors to detect vehicles entering and leaving each sector, in order to communicate the number of free spaces. Being an area with delimited entrances and exits, the guidance project could be deployed with only 22 sensors to monitor the 5,000 spaces.

Parking in Audi is now far smoother and quicker. Thanks to the improvements introduced, congestion has disappeared and vehicle flow in the parking area is now more efficient. This was how the CEO of MSR-Traffic Harald Schmitt, our partner in Germany, explained it. “Urbiotica’s solution is also a very good system in terms of cost effectiveness”, said Schmitt, and added, “Audi and LGI are delighted to have a dynamic parking guidance system which they are thinking about extending”.

The new Urbiotica White Paper reveals myths and truths about Smart Parking technologies

Urbiotica presents its new White Paper to offer a better perspective on the myths and truths of existing technologies aimed at improving the management and optimisation of parking areas. This document outlines the experience accumulated by the company over the past eight years, during which more than 10,000 sensors have been deployed and almost 3 million daily detections generated, sensors which are still operational in customer projects in almost twenty countries on three continents.

The emergence of technologies related to the Internet of Things has aroused great expectations for those who manage car parks. However, because the projects deployed have not always achieved their goals, some users remain doubtful about the reliability of the solutions applied. This has led to a debate on the maturity of these technologies.

The White Paper reviews current technologies for detecting vehicles and summarises the advantages and disadvantages of each of them. Urbiotica details in this document the company’s experience in implementing smart parking solutions, the technical and operational know-how developed, the difficulties we have faced and the major successes obtained and future opportunities to be offered by technological developments and market evolution.

The new White Paper describes how, from an original and patented idea, Urbiotica has built its success story.

We will present this document and other Urbiotica novelties at the upcoming Intertraffic event to be held in Amsterdam from 5 to 8 April. Intertraffic: EL.305 ELICIUM Hall.

Urbiotica releases its new parking sensor: U-Spot 2.0 Long Range

Urbiotica will present the new version of its parking sensor U-Spot 2.0 Long Range which commercial version will be available from September 2016. The new parking sensor delivers a better user experience and even more reliability to Urbiotica’s solutions:

  • Simplify the design
  • Reduce cost and logistic of installation
  • Improve remote maintenance operations and cost
  • Increase the reliability of the whole system
  • Offer more flexibility to comply with sites constraints and client use cases

These new benefits, made possible thanks to a year of R+D developments, are the following:

  • More practical: new version of communication protocol U-Sense Long Range (-50% of network devices)

Implemented in network devices U-Flag and U-Box as well as U-Spot 2.0, the new communication protocol U-Sense Long Range will have a great impact on distance design (up to 4 times the previous ones) and hence on the number of network devices (up to -80% of devices, -50% in average). It will also bring much more design flexibility, offering installation sites inaccessible before.

  • More lifetime: energy harvesting innovations to extend device useful lifetime 2 years more (12 years)

Thanks to a new battery incorporated and energy harvesting improvements, regarding supply system and firmware optimization, the useful lifetime of U-Spot 2.0 in default mode reach 12 years, confirming its nº 1 position on the smart parking sensors market.

  • More flexible: configuration options available remotely for measurement frequency.

4 options can be configured for each parameter of measurement frequency and “alive” message. With the possibility of configuring the measurement frequency down to 3s, the U-Spot 2.0 confirms its position of “best-in-class” on the market. Very useful for example in the context of heavy rotations cases with display panels or even to refine rotation statistics, it will be configurable remotely and each sensor set-up can be recovered on demand.

  • More reliable: as for each new version of U-Spot, design and firmware have been optimized to increase both sensor and global system reliability, improving in particular the management of communication errors and resistance to harsh temperature and humidity conditions
