WAVE: The Nation’s First Wireless Charging Infrastructure Solution to Deploy at a Maintenance Depot

Salt Lake City, UT– Widely known for its in-route wireless charging technology, Wireless Advanced Vehicle Electrification (WAVE) announced today it has transformed the industry through its initiative to modernize operations by bringing its wireless charging system to Josephine Community Transit’s (Josephine) maintenance depot. This system will wirelessly charge two remanufactured Zero Emission Propulsion System (ZEPS) buses from Complete Coach Works, with an additional two vehicles being added later this year.

As states across the U.S. continue to mandate more sustainable regulations on transportation, operators seek cost-effective methods to reduce investment and operation costs to acquire cleaner modes of transportation. Smart charging solutions are a viable economic option to consider with electric mobility.

Traditionally, electric vehicles return to a maintenance depot for overnight parking where they are charged by overhead infrastructure or plug-in chargers and placed back into operation the next day. These chargers require frequent maintenance and space for electrical equipment.

The WAVE system offers a more aesthetically pleasing option for a transit agency or fleet operator and takes up much less space than plug-in or overhead chargers. The system consists of a charging pad conveniently embedded in the pavement and transfers power through the air to a receiving pad mounted on the vehicle’s undercarriage. Its inductive power transfer eliminates the hassle of cords or overhead infrastructure. The system requires no cables or connectors and has no moving parts, substantially reducing maintenance requirements both on-and-off the bus.

“Offering the WAVE system at a maintenance garage, in addition to its typical en route use, is a unique opportunity to work collaboratively with Josephine and advance the industry,” stated Michael Masquelier, WAVE’s Chief Executive Officer.

Josephine embarks on a modernization journey with WAVE who remains at the forefront of the wireless technology industry. Josephine is one of only four agencies in Oregon deploying 100% electric vehicles into transit service and will continue to use WAVE inductive charging at its maintenance depot.

WAVE Supports Antelope Valley Transit Authority to be the First Fully Electric Fleet

Powered by Wireless Chargers

Salt Lake City, UT- Wireless Advanced Vehicle Electrification (WAVE), the leading innovator in heavy-duty vehicle wireless charging, announced today that it will provide additional wireless inductive charging systems to Antelope Valley Transit Authority (AVTA), as they transition to a 100% electric vehicle fleet.

The economy’s shift toward sustainability has influenced AVTA’s decision to become pioneers of battery electric bus transportation. By combining groundbreaking electric bus technology with wireless inductive charging technology, AVTA’s innovative bus project will be the first of its kind in the nation. The electric bus fleet project will not only benefit local communities, but the environment as a whole.

“Our goal is to seamlessly integrate the charging into naturally occurring dwell times in our schedule,” stated AVTA CEO Macy Neshati, “and with the industry leading 250kW transfer rate that WAVE provides, we can add as much as 133 miles of range on a typical 8-hour shift, which allows us to conduct business as usual while disposing of old polluting diesel buses.”

In-route charging means buses can have smaller batteries, reduced vehicle weight, a higher passenger capacity, and extended vehicle range. Manually attaching power connectors for plug-in chargers is time-consuming, not to mention the risks associated with above ground charging equipment through distasteful visual clutter of overhead lines and pylons. In addition, overhead chargers include moving parts requiring frequent maintenance that will significantly increase costs.

Michael Masquelier, WAVE’s Chief Executive Officer, says, “It’s the completely “hands-free” automated charging operation that is driving demand, which requires absolutely no action by the operators.  AVTA’s electric buses can now move passengers all day long, without a single concern about having enough range.”

“We are honored to be a part of AVTA’s significant milestone in its goal of attaining an all-electric fleet,” says Michael Masquelier, “AVTA has paved the way for transit agencies adopting electric buses with range concerns simply by eliminating the concerns altogether.”

WAVE technology transfers power through the air from a single embedded charging pad placed in the pavement to a receiving pad mounted on the vehicle’s undercarriage. The pad embedded in the ground is sturdy enough to be run throughout the course of the day without damage, has no moving parts, and avoids risks associated with above ground charging equipment.

WAVE is honored to partner with AVTA toward its goal of green mobility. “We look forward to working on future projects with them,” stated Michael Masquelier. WAVE wishes AVTA much success in its continued efforts to provide exemplary service to the communities it serves.

U.S. Department of Energy Selects WAVE Drayage Electrification Project with Groundbreaking Wireless Inductive Charger to Support Battery Electric Drayage Trucks

Salt Lake City, UT– Wireless Advanced Vehicle Electrification (WAVE) is proud to announce the selection of its “High-Power Extreme Fast Charging Development and Deployment for Electric Drayage Trucks at the Port of Los Angeles” and $8.4M project award from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Batteries and Electrification to Enable Extreme Fast Charging Funding Opportunity.

WAVE will partner with Cummins Inc., Schneider Electric, Utah State University and Total Transportation Services Inc. (TTSI) to develop, deploy and demonstrate a first-of-its-kind 500kW “XMEG” wireless inductive charger to support zero-emission (ZE) battery electric drayage trucks.  The solution leverages USU technology for a direct Medium Voltage grid connection to greatly reduce cost, size and complexity of installed XMEG systems.

“This is a critical technology because battery electric commercial vehicles will play an important role in improving air quality in cities and ports, but charging infrastructure can be a barrier to their adoption,” said Michael Masquelier, WAVE’s Chief Executive Officer. “WAVE looks forward to a fruitful partnership with DOE and we are proud to help make zero-emission freight truck operations a reality.”

WAVE technology transfers power through the air, from an embedded charging pad placed in the pavement to a receiving pad mounted on the vehicle’s undercarriage, reducing the amount of on-board storage needed to operate. The innovative WAVE extreme fast charger will allow TTSI’s ZE drayage trucks to charge during normal cargo loading and unloading stops. Combined with the groundbreaking improvements enabling extreme fast charge, this “top-off” charge capability will significantly extend the uptime of the trucks, eliminating battery range concerns and enabling them to complete the rigorous duty cycles associated with around-the-clock freight operations.

Utah-based WAVE will deploy and field test the system this year and next. The new system will be installed at TTSI at the Port of Los Angeles. Victor La Rosa, CEO & Founder of TTSI noted, “This is an important step in TTSI’s innovative push to reduce emissions throughout its terminal operations. Data gathered from this project will provide critical insights not only to TTSI but also to the port and freight sectors at large. The model that we are building will form a blueprint that any port operator looking to significantly reduce emissions can follow.”

This project will showcase the technologies enabling the zero-emission future of port functions. Cummins is integrating an electric powertrain that will successfully meet the operational needs of this demanding application at the Port of Los Angeles.

“We are pleased to work with these partners and develop our experience with extreme wireless fast charging, a key technology to enable broader adoption of electric powertrains,” said Wayne Eckerle, Vice President of Research and Technology at Cummins.“Our goal is to bring multiple clean power solutions to markets to help improve the environment while powering our customers’ success.”
