A Decade of High Reliability – Westfalia’s Automated Parking Facilities in Copenhagen

Copenhagen opted for a solution that allows its urban planners to create more car-free, green spaces, while at the same time addressing the typically urban parking problem

York, Pa. — July 17, 2019 — Westfalia Technologies, Inc. (Westfalia), a leading supplier of automated parking systems worldwide, is proud to report that for nearly a decade the first three fully automated car parks in the Danish capital Copenhagen, installed by partner and sister company Westfalia Logistics Solutions Europe (WLSE), have been operating reliably 24/7.

With the aim of becoming the first city in the world to be CO2-neutral in 2025, Copenhagen opted for a solution that allows its urban planners to create more car-free, green spaces, while at the same time addressing the urban parking problem. With its fully automated parking facilities (totaling 840 parking spaces), the city has not only been able to accommodate more parking spaces in less space, but also reduced energy consumption and polluting emissions, thus making an important contribution to its declared climate goal.

Rasmus Kronborg, Branch Manager of the WLSE local service team in Copenhagen, said, “It’s almost like wine: over the years it has been getting better and better. From the beginning we had a system availability of more than 99 percent for all three parking garages. The fact that we have not only been able to keep this value constant for almost a decade, but have even optimized it further, makes the City of Copenhagen as our customer and, above all, the users trust our installations.”

In order to ensure outstanding system performance, a 4-person local service team is available in Copenhagen around the clock. Most of the systems’ malfunctions can be remedied remotely in the shortest possible time. However, the service technicians ensure through regular maintenance and inspections that potential sources of disruption can be detected and remedied at an early stage, often before a malfunctional occurs. In addition, the service technicians’ feedback provides Westfalia’s development engineers at the corporate headquarters with important information for future innovations and improvements.

Christian Schlief, Head of Car Park Automation at WLSE, said, “The choice of suppliers and materials, a close working relationship with the service technicians, the influence of more than 45 years of project experience on our development work, the quality-driven processes in our production facility and optimally selected maintenance cycles of the individual system components are all factors that influence the life cycle of an installation. An older system does not have to be a disadvantage. A well planned and maintained system is much more of an advantage: namely, providing reliability and thus a secure investment.”

500 Walnut Automates Parking with Westfalia Technologies

Leading manufacturer of parking systems unveils first-of-its-kind automated parking technology

YORK, Pa. – Oct. 30, 2017 – Westfalia Technologies, Inc. (Westfalia), a leading manufacturer of automated parking systems, announces today that Scannapieco Development Corporation, one of the Philadelphia region’s most renowned and respected developers widely credited for introducing a whole new level of ultra-luxury residences to Philadelphia, has installed the company’s automated parking system at 500 Walnut, Philadelphia’s most luxurious condominium tower.

Opened in early 2018, 500 Walnut was the first project in the U.S. to utilize Westfalia’s new palletless parking system. The 86-space parking system seamlessly integrated with the building structure and maintained the ultra-luxury aesthetics where the residents interacted with the parking system in the two transfer areas located on the ground floor.

Tom Scannapieco, owner, Scannapieco Development Corporation, said, “We are committed to not only implementing the latest and greatest technology in all of our projects, but we are always working to identify futuristic trends and advancements to simplify the day-to-day living of our residents. We worked collaboratively with Westfalia to develop a system that met the unique specifications of our project. Westfalia’s focus on service and the expertise of its engineers made working with them on this project a pleasure and I look forward to working with them again on future projects.”

Westfalia’s palletless automated parking system uses Westfalia’s Satellite® technology that can adjust to the length of the car’s wheelbase, allowing the system to handle multiple car sizes. Once the vehicle is positioned in the transfer cabin and the driver and passengers have cleared the area, users then answer a series of questions on a touch screen, the doors are closed and the vehicle is lowered into the system where the Satellite drives under the car where the wheels are clamped, transporting the car onto the shuttle. The system includes redundancies, such as two independent shuttles, to ensure the system remains operational. Unlike pallet-supported systems, the vehicle is transported into the parking garage and positioned on a concrete deck.

Dan Labell, president, Westfalia Technologies. Inc., said, “We are thrilled to partner with Scannapieco Development Corporation to offer the next generation of our automated parking system at 500 Walnut. The team’s tedious attention to detail and level of interest to all facets of automated parking has motivated our relationship and our commitment to ensure the success of this project.”
